This invention relates generally to a ma.- chine orr apparatus for applying gum or like adhesive material to the surface of posters ork as gum or paste and then applying the strip f to the glass with the adhesive side neXt to the glass. This method has not proven satisfactory for the reason that the adhesive will not be evenly distributed and will often obliterate the printed matter on the strip.` Furthermore, after the adhesive has dried, the strip cannot be readily removed without great diiiculty and destruction of the stripL\`-/ In order to obviate these difficulties, I pro pose to apply or afHX the strips to the glass by means of a gum adhesive which is applied to one side of the strip in spots, in such a manner that the printed matter on the strip will not be blurred or defaced and the strip can be readily removed and replaced when desired. It is therefore the main object of this invention to provide a machine or apparatus for applying a gum adhesive to such a strip in spots.
Machines for coating these strips or placards with paste or adhesive are old and well known. These machines embody essentially a roll over which the strips are carried and adjacent which is a second roll which dips into an adhesive pot at one side and bears against the strip carried by the roll on the other side in such a manner as to apply a thin coating of paste to one side of the strip. My invention consists essentially in providing an attachment for such machines by means of which the paste ,or gum may beapplied to the strips in spots.
Further and more limited objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds and by reference to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the pasting apparatus with my attachment secured thereto; Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation of a machine taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view through the machine taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, the printing cylinder being shown partly in end elevation and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the pattern strip for applying the adhesive to the label or placard in spots.
` Referring now to the drawings, the reference character 1 designates a base or support in which is journaled a shaft 2 on which is non-rotatably mounted a roller 3 and ring gears 4 which are non-rotatably connected with the shaft. Pivotally mounted on a shaft 5 on the support 1 is awbell cra-nk 6 adapted to receive and support an adhesive container 7, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Journaled on container 7 is a shaft 8 to which is non-rotatably connected a paste roller` 9. On one end of shaft 8 is keyed a gear 10 which meshes with gear 4 on shaft 2 to form a driving connection for the paste roll. Also journaled on the container is a shaft 11 which is parallel to shaft 8 and which carries a. feed roller 12. Keyed on the opposite end .of shaft l1 is a gearf12a which meshes with a gear 1,2b keyed on shaft 8 to form a driving connection for the feed roll. lThe roller 9 dips into the adhesive held within the container 7 and the ring gear l0 meshes with the gear 4 on the shaft 2. Power is applied p to the shaft 2 to rotate thefroller 3 counter clockwise, as shown in Fig. 1. rlhe gears 4 and l0 form a driving connection with the r paste roll and serve to rotate the paste roll in the opposite' direction. The paper strips 4or placards a are fed into the roller 3 as shown in Fig. 1 and are engaged by a fastening element or spring clip 13 and as the roll is rotated a coating of paste is applied to the strips as they are carried through the machine. The feed roller 12 serves to wipe od the excess paste or adhesive so that the layer of paste will be evenly distributed over the entire surface of the strip. rFhe mechanism thus far described is old and well known and forms no part of this invention.
In order to .provide means for applying paste to strips in spots, l( have provided an attachment for this machine which consists of a frame member 14 which is preferably substantially rectangular in shape and is pivotally connected with the base member or support 1 by means of a shaft 15, journaled in the support. The lower side of the frame 14 is curved inwardly as shown most clearly in Fig. 1 and the upper end of the frame is supported by brackets 16 disposed above the machine. Mounted in a frame 18 are two pairs of rollers 19 and 19a which engage on opposite sides of the rail as shown most clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The frame 18 is connected with the upper portion of the frame 14 by means of a bracket 2O and an adjustable connecting link 20u. Journaled in the frame 14 is a shaft 21 on which is mounted a hollow drum 22. Non-rotatably secured to the shaft 21 are a pair of ring gears 23 which mesh with the ring gears 4 on the shaft 2 and form a driving connection between the drum 22 and the roller 3. Secured about the periphery of the drum 22 is a pattern strip of form 24, shown in detail in Fig. 4, and having a` plurality of raised portions 25 thereon, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear. Connected with the upper portion of the support 1 are a pair of pivotally connected links or levers 26 and 27 pivotally connected with each other. The lever 26 is pivotally connected with the support 1 at one end and the lever 27 is pivotally connected to the upper portion of the frame 14. A lever 28 is pivotally connected with the bell crank 6 at one end and has its opposite end pivotally connected with the levers 26 and 27 as shown at 27a. A foot lever 29 is provided adjacent the lower end of the bell crank 6 for moving the same about its pivot. By referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that when the foot lever 29 is depressed, the upper end of the bell crank 6 will be elevated and the pivotal connections just described will tend to urge the drum 22 into engagement with the roller 3, the ring gears 23 and 4 forming the driving connection between the drum and the rollei'. Coil springs 30 are connected at one end with the brackets 16 and at their opposite ends with the upper end of the frame 14 and serve to hold the rollers into resilient engagement with each other. Suitable adjusting means 31 are provided for adj usting the tension of the springs to vary the pressure between the drum 22 and roller 4.
When it is desired `to operate the machine to apply paste to strips and placards, the adhesive container is moved from the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and is secured on a bracket 32 carried by the frame member 14 in such a position that the gear 10 meshes with the gear 23 on the shaft 21.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The paper strips or placards a are fed into the roller 3 and are grasped at the forward end by the spring clip 13 and are moved about the roller in the direction shown by the arrows in Figs. 1 and 3. 'The gears 4 and 23 are in mesh and form a driving connection between the roller 3 and the drinn 22. The gear 23 also meshes with the gear 10 and drives the paste roll 9 and feed roll 12. As the paste roll 9 dips into the adhesive in the container 7, it will be seen that paste will be applied to the raised portions 25 of the pattern strip 24 carried by the drum 22. The gum or other adhesive will be transferred from the raised portions of the pattern strip 25 unto the strip or placard which is carried by the roller 2. The amount of paste delivered onto the strip or placard may be regulated by means of adjustable screws 33 which adjusts the position of the feed roll 12 with respect to the paste roll 9. While 1 have disclosed a crank 34 for actuating the roll 3, it is of course understood that this roll may be driven by any suitable power.
lVhen it is not desired to make use of the attachment herein described, the levers 26, 27 and 28 may be disconnected and the frame member 14 and its supporting mechanism moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. 1n this position, the pasting machine may be operated in the usual manner, it being only necessary to change the position of the adhesive container 7 back to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
It will now be clear that l have provided an apparatus for applying paste to strips or placards which is in the nature of an attachment to a well known pasting machine. Various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention. It is therefore understood that my invention is to be limited only in accordance with the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim is 1. An appara-tus for applying paste to strips of paper comprising a support, a roller journaled in said support and adapted to receive a strip of paper thereover, a framepivotally secured to said support, a drum journaled in said frame and adapted to be moved into driving engagement with said roller, a pattern strip secured about the surface or said drum and having a plurality of raised portions thereon, means for applying a coating of adhesive to the raised portions of said pattern strip and including means for rotating said drum and roller to apply adhesive to said strip in spots.
2. An apparatus for applying an adhesive to strips of paper in spots comprising a support, a roller journaled in said support and adapted to receive a strip of paper thereover, a frame p-ivotally connected with said support, a drinn journaled in said frame, a pattern strip secured about the periphery of said drum and having raised portions thereon,
means for movingy said frame to bring the raised portions of said pattern strip into con-l tact with the strip of paper carried by said roller, means for applying an adhesive to the raised portions of said pattern strip and including means for rota-ting said roller and drum in op-posite directions.
3. An apparatus for applying adhesive to Strips of paper comprising a support, a roller journaled in. said support and having means for securing a strip of paper thereto, a frame pivotally secured to said support, a drum carried by said frame, a pattern strip carried by said drum and having raised portions thereon, means for moving said frame to bring said roller and drum into engagement with each other, means for applying an adhesive to the raised portions of said pattern strip, means for forming a driving connection between said roller and drum whereby said drum and roller will be rotated in opposite directions to transfer the adhesive from the pattern strip onto the strip of paper on said roller and means for varying the pressure betwen said roller and drum.- l

An apparatus forsapplying an adhesive to strips of paper in spots comprising, ab'ase, a roller mountedu on said base and adapted to receive a strip of paper to be coated thereover, a frame, normallyiin a non-operable position relative to said base, and movable toward said base to an operable position, a drum mounted on said frame, apattern strip carried by said drum and havinga raised portion thereon, means for moving said drum from 'said non-operable posit-ion to an operable position near said base, whereby said raised portion of said pattern strip is brought into cn-` gagement with the strip" of paper on said rollcr, means for applying an adhesive to said raised portion of said pattern strip including means tor rotating said roller and said drum in opposite directions.

An apparatus for applying an adhesive to strips of paper in spots comprising, a base, a roller mounted on said base and adapted to receive a strip'of paper to be coat-ed thereover, a frame, normally in a non-operative position relative to said base and movable toward said base to an operable position therewith, a bell crank lever for actuating said :trame from said non-operable position to an operable position, a drum mounted on said framc, a pattern strip carried by said drum and having a raised portion-thereon, means for applying an -adhesive to said raised portion of said pattern strip including means for rotating said roller and said drum in opposite directions. 4 I

An apparatus for applying an adhesive to strips of paper in spots comprising, a base, a roller mounted on said base and adapted to receive a strip of paper to be coated thereover, a frame, normally in a non-operative position relative to said base, and movable toward said base to an operable position therewith, va' bell crank lever for actuating said frame from said non-operable position to an operable position, a pair of levers, one having one end thereof pivotally mounted on said base and the other lever having an end pivotally mounted on said frame, a link pivotally connected with said bell crank lever at one end andpivotally connected to said leversat the other end thereof, a drum mounted on said frame, a pattern strip carried by said drum and having a raised portion thereon, means for applying an adhesive to said raised portion of said pattern strip including means for rotating said roller and said drum in opposite directions.

An attachment, for applying an adhesive to strips of paper in spot-s, adapted to be used with an adhesive applying mechanism having a base supporting a strip carrying roll, comprising a frame readily attachable to said adhesive applying mechanism and pivotally mounted thereon, a drum journaled on said frame, a pattern st-ripcarried by said drum, means carried by said frame for applying an adhesive to said pattern strip, means for bringing said drum into engagement with said roll, and means for forming a driving connection between said roll and said drum. l

An attachment, for applying an adhesive to strips of paper in spots, adapted to be used with an adhesive applying mechanism having a base supporting a strip carrying roll, comprising a frame readily attachable to said adhesive applying mechanism, a drum journaled on said frame, a pattern strip carried by said drum, means carried by said frame for applying an adhesive to said pattern strip, means for bringing said drum into engagement with said roll, means for forming a driving-connection between said roll and said drum, and means for supporting the upper end of said frame, said means including a bracket, a track depending from said bracket, a support member secured to the topv i of said frame, a car body slidable along said track, and an adjustable link connecting said car body and said support member.
