`The present invention relates to improvements in firearms, especially of the type set forth in copending application Serial No.
310,305, filed by Crawford C. Loomis, October 4, 1928, wherein is disclosed a firearm of the single-shot breech-loading type. Manual operation of the breech block, after firing, causes actuation of an extractor member which withdraws the fired shell from` the io breech to a position for manual removal.
It is an object of the present. invention to provide an improved mechanism actuated by movement of the breech block to not only extract the fired shell but also to eject the l5 same clear of the firearm, thus leaving the breech open for a fresh cartridge to be inserted therein. f
It is a further object of our invention to provide, in a firearm having a predetermined Vrequired sequence of operations for its breech closing mechanism, anejector device, the operation of which cooperates with the required sequence of operations of the breech closing mechanism, in order to insure a high "i degree of safety to the operator of the rearm.
Irt is a further object of the invention to 1provide in a firearm having a removable barrel a combined shell extractor and'ejector mechanism which, on removalof the barrel, will not be deranged, but nevertheless will be accessible for cleaning and lubricating.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combinations and arrangements of parts as illustrated by the preferred embodiment described in theV following specification of which the accompanying drawings form a part.

With reference to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 10 designates a barrel detachably connected to forearm 11 by means of screw 12 passing through the forearm and into the lower portion of the barrel. The barrel is detachably mounted by means of a take-down mechanism on a receiver portion 13 which houses the firing mechanism. This take-down mechanism comprises a plug 14,
tapped into the lower portion of the barrel, and counterbored and threaded to receive a take-down screw 15 which passes through an aperture in the receiver. The usual stock 16 is attached by a tang screw 17 to the receiver. t.
Within the receiver a breech block 1S is pivoted at 19. The breech block is formed with an upstanding portion 2O which houses a firing pin 21. A hammer`22 is pivoted at 23 and a trigger 24 is pivoted at 25. S ring pressed plunger 27 inthe trigger piece eing urged against an abutment 26 in the receiver wall tends to hold a. nose portion 28 ofthe trigger in an-elevated or hammer engaging position (Fig. 5). ,A notch 29 is `provided in the hammer to be engaged by the trigger nose to hold the hammer in a full-cocked position. A notch 30, somewhatdeeper and shaped to engage and loch the trigger when the hammer is in a half-cocked position, is also provided in the hammer.
As more fully explained in the co-pending application Serial No. 310,305, referred to above, the loading and cooking operations take place in a definite sequence in order to insure a high degree of safety to the operator of the firearm. If, after ring, the hammer be retracted to the full-cocked position (not illustrated), shoulder 32 on the lower forward portion of the hammer will be raised to such a position as to form an abutment for a heel portion 31 of the breech block, and thereby prevent the breech block from swinging downward far enough to expose the breech for inserting a cartridge therein. rEhe half-cocked position only ofthe hammer will permit the breech block to be lowered yenough to clear the breech for loading (F ig. 5). On returning the breech block to its upward position, it Will be seen that pin 53 bearing against lug 46 will canse the extractor member to begin its return movement, and the engagement of the breech block with the extended end of the extractor member 4() will cause the extractor member to be fully returned to the position of F ig. 4, whereupon sea-r 50, aft-er yielding slightly under the pressure of spring 51 to permit lug 47 to pass, Will re-engage said lug, as in Fig. 4. v
It will be understood that various modifications and changes inthe shape, size, construction and arrangement of some or all of the parts of this invention may be made Without departing Vfrom the spirit of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
What We claim is 1. In an ejector mechanism for iirearms, in combination, a receiver, a firing chamber, a pivoted breech block mounted in said receiver movable to close said chamber, an ejector member slidable to move from shell engaging position in the breech to a shell ejecting position, means whereby movement of said breech block will positively exert an extracting movement to said ejector member, and means controlled by further movement of said breech block to impart a shell ejecting movement to said ejector member.
2. In an ejector mechanism for firearms, in combination, a receiver, a firing chamber, a breech block pivoted in said receiver and movable to close said chamber, an ejector member movable from a position adjacent said chamber to a shell ejecting position, means whereby initial movement of said breech block will impart a shell extracting movement to said ejector member, and other means controlled by further movement of said breech block to impart a shell ejecting movement to said ejector member. j
3. In an ejector mechanism for firearms, in combination, a ring chamber, a receiver, a breech bloclrpivoted in said receiver, an ejector member movable from a retracted position to a shell ejecting position, means carried by said breech block engaging said ej ector to restrain the same from moving to shell ejecting position, said engaging means being releasable at a predetermined point in the movement of said breech block, and additional means carried by the breech block engageable with the ej eetor member to positively impart a shell-extracting movement to said ejector member.

6. In a firearm, in combination, a tiring chamber, a breech block, a hammer, a trigger adapted to hold said hammer in either of two positions, means whereby the breech block obstructs the chamber when the hammeris held in one of its positions, the breech block being permitted to clear the breech in the other held position of the hammer, an ejector membermovable to extract and eject a shell means whereby the ejector member is prevented from moving for shell extraction and ejection when the hammer is held in the rstmentioned position, the said last-mentioned means permitting movement of the ejector member for shell extraction and ejection when the hammer is in its other held position.
7 In a firearm, in combination with a receiver and a breech block pivoted therein, an ejector mechanism comprising an ejector member movable from a retracted position to a rearward shell ejecting position, said ejector having two engaging means, a device carried by said breech block engageable with the irst of said engaging meansto positively move said ejector member away from its retracted position, said device serving also as a limiting stop to be engaged by the second engaging means at the shell ejecting position of the ejector member.

In a firearm, in combination, a ring chamber, a receiver, a breech block pivoted in said receiver, an ejector member movable relative to said receiver, means for positively moving said member to extract a shell, resilient means for imparting a shell'eject-ing movement to said member, and a member piv- `oted on said breech block and engaging said 'ejector member to control the movement thereof.
