A further 0b`ect relates to the manner of mounting the matrix, die anddie-h0lder in a carrier which can be readily attached or de'- f Vtaclied lfroin the machine as a unit, and substitute ,another unit therefor'in caseo break- -f age, or when it is desired to form .heads of :digerzent sizesthereby greatlydecreasing Athe )loss of time in ,changingthe matri- X and, die

Another object is to provide a'means for positively ejecting the'nished article from the nia-trix at the end of the heading operation.
Still another object .of my inven'tionisffto provide means for positivelydetaching the inished article froint'lie jdie after it has `loeen ect-cd from the niatrix by the die.

f release is formed at an intermediate Vpoint with an annular shoulder 34. A spring is interposed between the front side of the shoulder 34 and an abutment 36 formed on the carrier and is adapted tonormally retract the dieholder and die attached thereto, while the rear side ofthe shoulder engages the face of the wedge to limit its backward movement;
' he rear en d of the die-holder is formed with a reduced end 37 which extends through the slot 1S of the wedge and contacts with the kicker-lever 14. j, Y y
In order to hold the carrier 26 in the central opening 24 of the bolster-plate 21, the
bolster-plate 21 and boss 25 are split as atV v 38, having cars formed at either side thereof through which a clamping-bolt 39 extends by means of which the sides of the opening- 24 are adapted to clamp the sides of the carrier 26 and the carrier is further secured by'means of a set-bolt 40. v
By this construction when it is desired toV form a different shaped, or sized head on the article to be headed itis only necessaryrto the clamping pressure on the bolt 39 and set-bolt 40, and the carrier can then be withdrawn from the centralopening 24 in the bolster-plate 21 and another carrier i11- serted in place thereof Vhaving the desired vmatrix and diemounted therein, or if so desired after the'carrier has been Withdrawn from the bolster-plate another matrix and die may be inserted in the carrier and die-holder. In mounting the carrier in this manner it Vwill be apparent to those skilled in the art that a great saving of time is obtained in changing these parts over the prior art.
It has been found-in actual practice. that -cnd of the wedge 9 an L-shapedbracket 41,
to the lower end of whichis attached aful- Y crum piece 42 to which is pivoted as at 43 one end of a lever 44, upon the opposite or free end of which is `mounted by means of a bolt 45 a roller 46 for engaging a cam 47 scoured to the bed-plate .1.
A stem-rod 4S having a bifurcatcd lower,
end 49 is attached at an .intermediate point to the lever 44 as at50,'the upwardly extending rod of which extends through an opening in the outwardly extending leg of the L- shaped bracket 41 and has a spring 51 interposed between the leg ofthe bracket and the bifurcated end 49 by means of which the lever is normally projected downwardly.
An adjustable kicker-holder 52 also mounted on Vthe lever 43 atan intermediate point to which is pivoted as at 53 a kickerofthe drawings.
Vrod 54, extending downwardly therefrom Ywardlv from the upper portion of the crosshead. The clamp-bars 58 are retained in position by means of nuts 57 and 6() on the stubshaft and are further held by means of a bolt 61.
The stock62, in the form of a rod or bar is fed by means of rolls 63 through the tube 64 and shear-blade 65 between the movable and stationary gripping dies 6G and 67 until the forward end of the stock engages the gauge 68 so as to cause the proper length of material to project beyond said gripping dies, where it is cut ofi.' by the lateral movement of the movable die 66 and clamped between the-same in the usual well. known man- The operation ofv mymachine is as follows Assuming that the mechanism is in the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, the stock bar or ro-d 62 having been-fed by means of the rolls 63 through the shear-blade 65 and between the movable and stationary clamping dies 66 and 67 until the forward end of the bar vengages the gauge 68. -The movable die 66 is then moved laterally to- -ward the stationary die 67 by any suitable vand pitman connection 6, advancing `the cross-head 3 thereby releasing the kickerlever 14 and allowing the rear side Vof the shoulder 34l of the die-holder 29 to engage the face of the wedge and thereby withdrawing` the die 28 into the matrix. As the crosshead 3 continues to advance the kicker-rod 54 is raised by means of the roller`46 engaging thel cam 47 and the end of the blank will be upset which is the end of the working stroke, as Awillbe .readily understood by rcferring to- Figure 2 of the drawings.
Y By the continued rotation of the main drive shaft 5 the cross-head 3 will reciprocate backward to the position indicated in Figures 1 and 3 in which position the lower end of the kicker-lever 14 will engagey the stop piece 15 and eject the headed article from the matrix 27 at the same time the kicker-rod 54 will detach the headed article from the end of the heading-die 28 as indicated in Fig. 1
