INV NTOR A TTORNEY Patented Feb. 24, 1931 onennns BRAHY, OF NEW YORK, 11. Y., ASSIGNOR or one-HALF TO CHARLES MARION, or NEW YORK, n. Y.
AUTOMATIC DISPENSING APPARATUS Application filed February 21, 1930. Serial No. 430,310.
This invention relates to automatic" machines for dispensing articles of merchandise, particularlyca-ns or jars of lubricating oil such as are generally sold at gasoline service stations This application is a continuation in part of my applications for automatic liquid fuel dispensers having the following filing dates and serial numbers: March 28th, 1928, Serial No. 265,257 August 28th, 1929, Serial No. 388,956; October 8th, 1929, Serial No. 398,162; October 8th, 1929, Serial No. 398,161. K
An object ofthis invention is to provide a machine that will automatically perform the dispensing operationthrough the medium of a coin actuatedmechanism. Another object of my invention is to provide means in an apparatus of this type, of storing the article to be dispensed in quantity, and of permitting the withdrawal of such articles one at a time. A further object is to provide a construction that will render the machine inoperative after all the articles have been dispensed and the machine is means to prevent the insertion of a coin dur- View of the machine of Fig. 1,
ing the dispensing operation, and to reopen the deposit slot afterthe completion of the dispensing cycle. Gther objects and features will appear from the drawings and description hereinafter given. 1 1
Referring to the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of my invention. i
F ig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken along line 2-2 of 1, and showing a portion of the tripping mechanism constituting part of this invention.
Fig. 3 is a rear sectional elevation taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

empty. A. still further object of this invention is to provide a NITED sire-res PATENT OFFICE Fig. 6 is a front elevation. Fig. 7 a side elevation, and Fig. 8 a plan viewof the cased apparatus.
In the drawings, the coin slot 1, super imposed upon the casing 2, connects with the coin chute 3 through the space 4, the s chute terminating above the rotatable bal coin receptacle 5, which is anced temporary aid more fully described in the prior applications above referred to and of which this is a continuation in part. The stems 6 and 7 attached to the receptacle 5, carry the c tact points 8, which are electrically connect ed to the contacts 9, 11, the low voltage 15, the motor 16,
a lamp 10, the i'esista and the lines I and nce solenoid 12, the contacts This electrical construction is fully descrihecl and made a part of the prior applicat Serial No. 398,162 hereinbefore mentioned hence a detailed deseriptionthereof willnot be repeated in thisapplication, but the various parts constituting such mechanism will be referred to hereinafter whenever it will be necessary to do so in order to adequately describe the operation of this apparatus.
The gear 17, which is in engagement with:
the worm 18 011 the rice the vertical shaft 20and the pinion which is in continuous engagement with shaft 19 ofthe motor, car
i 21 the bevel gears 22 and 23. These latter gears are mounted on the shafts 24 and 25 res tively, the pinions 26 and 27 attachedto the ends of these shafts being in engagement with the circular rack 28.
The hollow cylindrical carrier 29 contains a peripherally disposed magazine for storage of the articles to the be dispensed which are shown in thedrawings as oil containers 30. The said magazine comprises a plural ity of cells 31 formed by the walls 32, 33and the base 34, the front and top of said cells ing open. This carrier 29 superimpo upon the said rack 28 and upon the ferentially disposed spaced rollers 35.
bef sed circuniplurality of guide rollers 86, which arealso circumferentially disposed, are in const abutment with the wall 33 of the carrier The casing 37 completely encloses the 5 carrier, except that there is an. opening M 29. aid 38 fun is fixed to each fully described in the original therein to permit the'withdrawal of the containers 30. V
Secured to the wall 33 is'the cam 39 which is engageable with the follower 40. This follower, shown a roller, is attached to one end of the lever 41 pivotally connected at 42, the other end of said lever 41 being pivotally connected to the rod 43 which passes through the helical spring 44, and" is attached thereto at the point 49. The lever ispivotally attached at itslower end to the rod 43, and at its upper end to the rod 46 which in turn is pivotally connected to the lever 4'7, the free end of which is iengageable with the shutter 48. p
Clamped to the shaft and 51, each of which carries at its loosely mounted member 52 having'thereon the three fingers, 53, 54, and 55. A stop 56 of the arms and 51 and is positioned between the fingers 53 and 54. The'finger is en gageable with the roller 57 at the lower end of the bent lever 58 which is pivotally connected at 59. The rod is pivotally attached at its lower end 61 to the lever 58, and at its upper end 62 to the lever63. The tripper rod 64 is pivotally connected to the lever 63 and the'shaft 66 on which the temporary coin receptacle 5 is mounted. 1 Fixed to the said trips per rod 64 is the member 67 which is engageablewith the finger 68 of the shutter control member 69. This member '69 is rotatably mounted at 7 O, the element 71 thereof being in engagement withthe shutter 48, the arm 7 2 24 are the arms 50 protruding into the slot in the coin chute 3 through the opening 7 3.
When a coin isdeposited in the slot 1 it 7 drops into the chute 3, and during its down ward passage, forces the arm 72 down, causing a clockwise rotation of the shutter control member 69, so that the element 71 will bring abouta movement of the shutter 48 in the. direction of the arrow, to close the slotl. The coin will drop into the temporary recep tacle 5, bringing the contacts 8 into abutment, these contacts being normally bearing Serial No. 398,162 filed October 8th, 1929. The establishment of an electrical connection at the contacts 8 brings the solenoid 12 into operation, causing an upward movement of the core 74, which results in the breaking of contact at 9 andthe making of contact at 13. This shuts off the current through the lamp 1 0 and closes the circuit through the slow-operating solenoid 14, thereby causing an upward movement of the core 75, and a closing of the circuit through contacts 15 which are in series with the lines I and TI and the motor 16. Thus the motor is set into 0peration.
The rotation of the motor 16 is transmitted to the pinions 26 and 27 through the medium of the gears'18, 17, 21, 22 and 23, and the end the a downward movement of the arm which is fixed to separated, as
applicationshafts 24 and 25. As the pinion 21 is positioned between gears 22 and 23, these latter gears will turn in opposite directions, so that the pinions 26 and 27, located diametrically opposite each other, will likewise turn in opposite directions, thereby imparting a rotary movement to therack 28 and the attached carrier 29. This revolving movement continues until the tripping mechanism, which will hereinafter be described causes the motor to stop, thereby bringing the carrier to a stop, so that one of the cells 31 with a container 30 therein will be positioned directly behind the opening 38 in the casing 37, to enable said container to be withdrawn.
swing around its the finger 55 will cause lever 58 to pivot 59, thereby producing the rod 60 against the action of the spring 7 6. 1 This movement is transmitted thrcugh lever 63 to the tripper rod 64, which causes the arm 65-to move in a clockwise direction l) turning the-shaft 66, with it, and thereby causing the receptacle 5 to swing downward to drop the coin through chute-77 and into the safe 78.
As the shaft 24 continues to rotate and the 'er55 passes its position of masimum lift he lever 58, 6-16 tension of the spring 76 cause an upward movement of rod 60 a consequent downward movement of the ol-er '57; against the adjacent surface of n er 55. This will cause a sudden rotation f member 52 about its axis until it is brought to stop by finger coming into contact with stop 56. In this manner the duration of the stay of rod 60 in its projected position is not unduly prolonged, the arm 65 is quickly brought-back to its starting position, and the receptacle 5 is consequently permitted to return to its normal position by the action of the weight 79. This weight constitutes the balancing mechanism and is fully described in the above referred to original application. The action of this balancing mechanism causes the contacts 8 to separate, thereby breaking the motor circuit and thusbringing the machine to a stop.
lit will be noticed that when the tripper rod 64 is moved in the direction of the arrow 1), the member 67 is brought into en gagement with the finger 68, causing a counter-clockwise rotation of the shutter con trol member 69, and a moving of the shutter 48 by the element 71 to the left, to open the slot and thus put the machine in readiness for the next cycle. At the same time the arm 72 6. As the movement of the shaft 24 i is brought back a The cam will therefore a close the slot 1.
7 the the lever ll back m mos so that it protrudes into the chute 3, in its normal starting position.
In setting the machine for operation, after all the cells .31 have been filled with the articles to be dispensed, the carrier 29 is so positioned that the last cell in the order of rotation will be behind opening 38 when the ca1n39 isin engagement with the roller 40. not come into contact with the roller 40 until the last cellis reached. When this occurs, the said cam will actuate the lever all and cause it to rotate about its pivot l2to produce a movement of rod 43, against the action of spring 44 in the direction of the arrow, thereby causing the lever 45 to produce an upward movement of the rod 46. As theupper end, of this rod 46 is pivotally connected end of this lever will engage the shutter 48 and move it in the direction of the arrow to After the cam 39 passes the 44 will bring the rod 43 and to their normal positions. Thus, after the last cellis reached and the entire magazine is empty, a coin cannot be deposited until the apparatus is reset and refilled.
