W. T. HENRY INDICATING DEVICE Filed Sept. 25, 1928 Patented Feb. 24, 1931 WILLIAM '1. HENRY, or HOUSTON, Texas mmcn'rme time]:
Application filed September 25, 1928 Serial No. 30 8,276.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an indicating device.
One object of the invention is to provide an indicating device of the character described which has been specially designed for attachment to the instrument board of a motor vehicle for the purpose of indicating to the driver when the lubricating oil should be drained from the motor and fresh oil supplied thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which of simple construction and may be cheaply produced and which is very eflicient for the purpose indicated and for other snmlar purposes.
lVith the above and other objects in View the invention hasparticular relation to certain novel features of construction operation and G arrangement of parts, an example of whlchis given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the device partly broken away, and The Figure 2 shows an edge vlew thereof.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures the numerals 3 and 5 designate concentrlc circular plates, one of which is provided with the marginal fingers 4, adapted to be bent over the margin of the other plate t9 hold the plates in assembled relation, thus iorminga casing. Between the plates are the concentric rings 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. These rmgs are preferably formed of celluloid or other light durable material, and each ring has the numerals from zero to nine, spaced apart therearound. The plates are held spaced apart by the lnner and outer spacer rings 14, 15 so that the rings 6 to 10 will not bind to such an extent that they cannot be rotated. The front plate 5 has a radial slot 13, cut therethrough, through which the numeralson the rings may be exposed and on each side of each numeral the rings are provided with small pin holes 10. An ordinary pin or other similar instrument may be inserted into one of the holes 10 to turn the corresponding rmg. If deslred, a 5 pin as 11 may be carriedin the side pocket 12.
The device maybe secured in place on the instrument bored by means of a suitable bolt or set screw passedthroughthe central opening 16and secured to the instrument board.
\Vhenthe oil is replenished in the motor, 'orwhen the vehicle is lubricated the rings 6 to 10 may be so adjusted as to reveal through the slot 13the mileage at which the lubricant should next be replenished and when the speedometer. indicates the mileage revealed through the slot 13 the driver will be apprised of the fact that fresh lubricant should be again supplied.
\VhileI have shown what I now consider to be the preferred form of the invention it is obvious that mechanical changes may be made therein and equivalents substituted for the parts shown and I reserve the right to make such changes and substitutions as may be found desirable within the principle of the invention.
What I claim is 1. A deviceof the character described comprising concentric plates, inner and outer spacers between said plates, means on the margin of one plate and engaged over the margin of the other plate to clamp the plates against said spacers, one of said plates having a radial slot, at philrality of concentric rings, one within the other, said rings being located between said spacers and being independently rotatable, said rings having numerals to be exposed through said slot.
2. A device of the character descriliied com prising concentric plates, inner and outer spacers between said plates, means on the margin of one plate and engaged over the margin of the other plate to clamp the plates against said spacers, one of said plates having a radial slot, a plurality of concentric rings, one within the other, said rings being located between said spacers and being independently rotatable, said rings having numerals to be exposed through said slot, a
side pocket carried by the device, an actuating pin therein engageable with said rings separately and through which the rings may be independently rotated.
3. A device of the character described comprising concentric plates, inner and outer spacers between said plates, means on the margin of one plate and engaged over the margin of the other plate to clamp said plates and spacers together, one of said" plates having a radial cut-away portion, a'
plurality of concentric rings one Within the other, said rings being located between said spacers and being independently rota-table, said rings having numerals arranged to be exposed successively through said cut-away portion, as the rings are-rotated:-
et. A device of the character described. comprising concentric plates secured to gether in spaced relation, one oi said plates.
having a radial cut-away portion, a'plurality of concentricirings one within the other and havingnumerals to begexposed through said cut awavportion as the ringsvare rotated a side pocket carried by the device, anactuating. pin therein engagc'able with said rings separatelyand through Whichthe rings may be independently rotated In testimony whereof I have'signed my name tothis'speoification.
' WILLIAM- T. HENRY.
