mm'ron oar Application filed Iaroh 23, 1928. Serial Io. 349,471.
This invention relates to closures for receptacles and particularly to closures for radiator ca s.
- It is an ject of this invention to provide 5 a radiator cap consisting of a non-rotatable member carried by the receptacle and. a nonrotatable member carried by the first member for forming a closure.
' It is also an object of this invention to pro- 1o vide, in connection with a radiator cap or other closures for vessels, a resilient diaphragm member adapted to cooperate with the gasket to form a close fitting relation between the receptacle and the closure and to provide a securely effective means for end of the spout of the receptacleand is in locked. engagement therewith by means of a sliding latch operated'in locking position by a flat sprin and released by means of a lever that is su stantially concealed and not readily operated except when it is desired to release the latch to remove the lid. For this purpose the lever is mainly concealed and has exposed to contact only a small part for the purpose of operating the lever and releasing the latch.
For the purpose of illustration there is shown a preferred embodiment ofthis invention in the accompanying drawings.
" Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of this invention showing the lid in closed position. a i
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 with the latch released and the lid partly open.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2.
igure 4 is a side view of the collar with the lid open. This view also shows a modified form of attachment by which the collar is attached to the filler spout of the container. Figure 5 is a top plan view of the collar shown in Figure 4.
Figure 6 is an inside elevation of the lid. This device is adapted to be used in connection with filler spouts or receptacles, but it is an upward extending flange 4, which provide an oval shaped seat. Within the seat andon the upper surface of the collar there is provided an annular groove 5 which receives a gasket 6. i This gasket may be composed of any suitable material but is preferablycomposed of some fibrous material that is adapted to resist the action of the fluid within the containeror radiator, and to retain its elasticity for the purpose of forming a closure with the cooperating part of the 11d.
To one side of the collar there are ear men1- bers 7. These ear members are two in numbar, and arranged in spaced relation to each other to provide one element of a hinge member. Opposite the ears 7 there is rovided a latch receiving slot 8, which is a apted to receive a latch member carried by the lid. The lid is indicated by the numeral 9, and is of a eneral oval shape, and has a lug 10 on one slde thereof for the purpose of cooperatin with the ears 7 to form the hinge connectlon between the collar and the lid.
Passing through these cars and this lu is a hole for the reception. of a spindle 11 a out which the parts turn for the purpose of opening and closing the lid. On the outer periphery of the circular part of the lid there are arran ed two substantially semi-circular ribs 12. hese ribs do not come together at their ends but leave a space therebetween for the passage of the latch member. Fitting within these semicircular ribs is a flexible diaphra 'm member 14 carried by the central thimble member 13 extending from the inner centrai part of the lid.
For the purpose of locking the lid in closedrelation to the collar there is provided a latch 15. This latch has a large central slot 16 and two small slots 17, one near each end thereof. The central slot is provided in the The purpose of the small slots is to receive.
the studs 18. On the ends of the studs 18 there are reduced arts 19 which fit within the slot 17 to gui e the latch member, and for the purpose of holding the latch member in engagement with the studs there is placed over the ends of the reduced parts of the studs, washers 20.
Forthe purpose of holding these washers in place the outer ends of the studs are turned over, as indicated by the numeral 21, in engagement with the faces of the washers so that the washers cannot be removed from the studs. The front end of the latch member 15 is indicated by the numeral 22 and is: adapted to engage in the slot 8 of the collar for the purpose of holding the lid in locking engagement with the collar. The rear end of the latch is indicated by the numeral 23 and has therein a hole 24 to receive a lug 25 on the inner end of a lever 26. The lever 26 is pivoted at the point indicated by the numeral 27, about which it turns in the operation of the latch. j
For the purpose of operatin the lever to release the latch there is provi ed serrations 28 on the outer end of the lever to be engaged by the hand of the person who operates the lever to release the latch. For the purpose of holding the latch in position to engage the slot in the collar there is provi e a spring 29 which is attached to the lid at points indicated by the numeral 30. Thus the spring is attached at each end to the lid, while the central part of the spring engages a stud 31 extending upward from the latch member.
Instead of the screw thread connection, as lnd cated by Figures 1 and 2, the collar may be fastened to the filler spout of a receptacle by means of the device shown in Figure 4. In this figure there are shown two projections 32, which extend downward from the collar and are adapted to fit within the spout of the receptacle. For the purpose of fastening the collar to the spout of the receptacle there are provided screws 33, which have on their outer ends a cone-shaped point for the purpose of engaging a cooperating part on the upper edge of the filler spout.
It is obvious from the foregoing description that applicant has provided a simple and inexpensive and easily operated cap, adapt:
' ed to be used in connection with filler spouts of receptacles, and particularly radiator caps.
as been provided a cap with a lid adapted to be securely held in concealing relation to the upper part of the filler spout, 'and one that cannot be easily removed without it being the purpose to remove the lid so that access may be had to the receptacle.
