"ALFRED sciiirinnnm or ivlfns'rnrn, NEW- Yon'x sonnwcrme My invention relates toimprovements in means. for clamping parts in position to facilitate the securement or'working thereof, suchas-in the arthof woodworking, and the same ,5 has for its object to provide'asimple, efficient and reliable device which is readlly manipulated andsecured in position to exert a clamping action'along a plurality oflines' of direction, or at a plurality of points.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character specified in which certain of the clampingcomponents thereof are capable of being relatively moved. to exert conj ointly a third. clamping action along a line of. direction extending transversely relative to thexlines of direction of.
said clamping componentsr Another object of the invention is toprovide a device of the character specified in 3Q whichan attachment maybe readily connected to a pair of ordinary clamps for causing positive movement thereof towards each other to exert a clamping actionalonga line ofdirection extending transversely relative to the lines ofdirection of'the individual clamps.--
. Another object of the inventionis to provide a; device of the character specified in which certain of the clamping components are 39 retained against slipping relative to the work when moved towards each other. i
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed outhereinafter. 7 ,Inthe accompanying drawings:
' Figure 1 is a perspective of one of the clamps of the device constructed according to and embodyingmy said invention. 7
Fig; 2 is a plan of the device with parts section; I Fig. 3 is an brokenaway; v F Fig. 4 is a section thereof on the line 44 of ig.2;- Y Fig. 5 is a plan showing a modifications; Fig; 6 is an elevation thereof with parts brokenaway; and
elevation thereof "with parts Fig. (is a section thereof on the line 7 7 ofFig. 5.
Referring to the drawings the clamping E9; means includesa pair of clamps 10 and 12 pivots on member 42. 7

each'comprising a'standard ll having alower arm lfiisecured thereon and upper arm 18 slidable thereon. Theouter' end of lower arm 16'is provided with a, universally swiveled abutment or member 20 adapted to engage a piece or member to= be clamped andthe outer end of the upper arm 18 is .providedwith a screw 22 threadedtherethrough and having a universally swiveled abutment 24; cooperating with the abutment 20. The two clamps 10 and 12 are substantially alikein construction. 1 1 r r The clamps 10 and 12 are connected togetherby means 26 for moving'the clamps toward each other to;conj ointly exert a cla nping actionalonga transverse line. I The connectingmeans 26 includes apairof. members 28 and30 preferably provided with slots 32' i and 34 receiving the'standards l4. Theimem- .bers 28; and .30 areadjustably secured to the 7 standards by the set screws 36. V p The members 28 and 30 are provided thereof towards the front and'similar lugs or ears 40 at therearthereof; Themembers 28 and 30 are pivotally connected through ears 40 to the ends ofaone piece bridging v with] lateral ears or lugs 38 at the inner sides member 12, having an interiorly' threaded A central portion 44 forming a nut meshing with the clamping screw or actuating-men, 1
substantially identical with those illustrated atcFigs. 1 to4, the samelincluding'the ears or .lugs 38fand lOgandbeing secured-by the set screws 36.
The members 28 and-30 are bridged by a" i' standard engaging members' 28 and 30 are one piece member 56'piv'oted atits ends'to the p ears 88 and having an enlarged central pore V 1 tion 58 provided with an opening receiving Q the inner end of thec lamping screw lfi for rotatably retaining the same. An interiorly threaded nut member 60 meshes with the screw e6. Links 62 are pivotally connected at the ends thereof to the cars and ears 6% on the member forming a toggle-like arrangement in this case, located at the rear of the clamps 10 and.12lfor swingingqthelatter about-their pivots on member 56.
The surfaces of the abutments 20.and.2t; are roughened or ribbed as indicated at o66 .to provide a surface 'capa'ble'of 'biting into' the work to prevent slipping thereon when the clamps 10 and 12 are moved towardsea cli other. 4
The portions 66 may be of any suitable configuration or design, such as the'reticulated design shown at-F igs.-1- to 4 orthe circular design shown a at '66; Fig. 5.
In operation, theactuating means; 26 or '26 are readily 'secured tothe clamping-comverse line and cause theipiecesof the work to be firmly pressed into engagement with each other 'atthe contiguous edges thereof.
In my invention the clamping components 10 and 12'therefore forIn'=-conjointly-a third clamping; component, thereby rendering the I device more universal and-flexible and enlargin'g' the A usefulness thereof;
The clamps- IO and: 12 the- -presen't invention are" connected togetherrljyf parallel transverse connections, one of wl-i-ich serves a'sthepivoted connection fer theclamplsand- "the other of which as; the 1 actuating means;
The clamping screw" 46-, 46?,- has the axis-- thereof at aright' angle to tl-ie oaral'l-el con nections and" is connected centrally. to both thereof; i
My device .may be re'a di-lyt'manipul'atedand' secured in position without the actuating means being in the :way-of thework, and pro vides three different-Iclampinga. Th v orking or. securement' of the pieces is -.therebygreatly facilitated and the'device may beemployed in connection with types-.of worir for which; th'e ind-ividualv clamps 10' or 12. are inadequate, thereby; providingja device having an enlarged range of usefulness, and particularly in connection i with the" fabrica- 7 tio'n ofveneered articles, the gluing of 'jeints' ofvariousforms, and working} upon curved surfaces. i v V 'Having thus: described I my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patw cut is: V
