Patented Feb. 24, 1931 UNITED STATES IATENT OFFICE WILSON r. HUNT, or moLmE, ILLInoIs, ASSIGNOR" ro MOLINE TOOL COMPANY, 013* MOLINE, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION I LAIPIN G MACHINE Application filed flay 5,
provide each of the tools with a set of grinding elements which are capable of expansion, together with means for a gradual expansion thereof, so as to correspondingly increase the cutting capacity of the tool. The operating means therefor is so arranged as to cause a variation in the position of the grinding elements upon each reciprocationof the tool.
other purpose thereof is to provide means for a delicate adjustment of the expansion devices, so that the difierent sets of grinding tools may be brought to the same diameter when desired, or one or other of said tools may be independently adjusted to conform to the size of the bore of the cylinder in which it is to be used. There is at times a variation in the diameters of such bores.
The above named, and other features and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following specification, in-
which;
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a lapping machine of a common construction, with the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side view showing the operating mechanism for the reciprocating. head of the machine, and the invention supported thereon.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section of one of the grindingtools.
.Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail of the invention,
in partial longitudinal section.
Fig. 5 shows the cam and ratchet ofFig. 4 rotated through 180.
The embodiment of the device as set out herein shows the same as applied to a lapping machine of a four spindle formation, it being understood that the same is usable with le machines, such.
movement to'give to the tools 192'7. Serial No. 188,957.
any .number of spindles and tools connected therewith, and the same has an independent application to and operation of each of such tools.
The reference number 1 indicates the base of a machine of the type named, on which is a table 2 for the support of an engine block or other work to be' operated upon. Mounted above the table is a frame 3, on the face of which is a pair of vertical ways 4 upon which is carried a traveler 5. Fixed to said traveler is a cross-beam 6,.upon which are mounted housings 7, in which are rotatably supported spindles 8, fixed to the lower ends of which are grinding tools 9. Supports 10 are projected upwardly from the side pieces of the frame 3, in which is rockingly mounted an arm 11, the forward end of which is connected by a coupling 12 with the traveler 5. Movement may be imparted to the rear end of said arm in any known manner for giving to the traveler and parts mounted thereon a desired amount of vertical reciprocating movement.
Fixed to each of the spindles 8 is a worm pinion 13, adapted for operation from a worm drive 14 on a shaft 15 rotatablymounted in the cross-beam 6. On one end, of said shaft is a pulley 16 to which a rotary movement may be imparted for giving a similar movement to the shaft.
In the lower end of each of the spindles 8 is a bushing 17 in which is rotatable a rod 18,
which pro ects upwardly through the spin dle, and for a little distance above the same. Said rod is held normally in an elevated position by means of a coiled spring 19 in a recess-20 in the upper end of the spindle, the upper end of the spring bearing againsta pin in the rod. In the lower ends of the rods are pins 21 entering openings in the inner faces of grinding stones 22, four of which are provided for each of the tools 9, as shown herein.
'At their rear edges said stones are provided with flanges '23, operable ,in ways 24 in the body of the tool, such ways being inclined downwardly and outwardly, so that a downward movement of the pins 21 will move the stones 22 downwardly, and at the same time the stones will move gradually outwardly.
Upon a return moiement of the pins the ets 26 fixed to the traveler 5, in proximity to the upper ends of thespindles 8, and fixed to said shaft so as to project above the upper ends of each of the rods 18 is a series of arms 27, each of which is fitted in its forward end with a threaded opening adapted to receive a similarly threaded screw 28, provided at its upper end with a thumb turn 29, by means of which the position of the screw may be regulated. Just below the thumb-turn is a barrel 30, containing 'micrometer markings which are readablewith a pointer 31, fixed to the arm 27. a
To one end of the shaft 25 is fixed an arm 32, in the upper end of which secured a pin 33, provided with a roller for operation on the edge: of a cam wheel 34, rotatable with a shaft 35 mounted in a bearing 36 fixed to the face of the traveler 5. A ratchet-wheel 37 is also fixed to the shaft 35, the teeth of said ratchet-wheel being engaged; by a dog 38 pivoted in a bracket 39 attached to the frame 3. In the operation of the machine the shaft 25 and wheels thereon have avertical reciprocating movement with the traveler 5, whereas the dog 38 is stationary. As a result the up and down movement of the ratchet wheel will cause an engagement of the dog 38 with the teeth .of said wheel in succession, and each of said movements will be accompanied by a partial rotation of the ratchet wheel and shaft 35. The conformation of the cam wheel 34 is such as to move the upper endof the arm 32' outwardly, which movement is imparted to the arm 27,- causing the screw 28 i to force the rod 18 downwardly, resulting in the expansion of the grinding elements before referred to. 5 At one point in the edge of the cam wheel 34 is an off-set 40, which permits a reverse movement of the arm 32 and a consequent immediate collapse of the grinding elements. This takes place at the end of the operation on a particular piece of work, such as a cylinder, and when the tool 9 is at the lowest part of its stroke; The return movement of the tool upwardly is thereby accomplished without any engagement with the wall of the cylinder;' and with no danger of the cylinder wallbeing scratched or otherwise marred in v the last movement of the tool outwardly, as
is liable to happen with non-collapsible tools;
It is the purpose of the invention'to have the cam-wheel 34; describe a complete revolution foreach operation of the tool, the numof teeth in the ratchet wheel correspondmg with the number of reciprocations of the its tool for'such operation, and said cam wheel is formed gradually increasing radii from the inner end of the 'ofl-set 40 to the outer end thereof, except for a little distance on the edge of the cam at 41, which has the same radius, and which permits the last reciprocating movement of the tool in the cylinder to be made without any farther ex pansion of the grinding'elements. Bythis means one or more finishing strokes can be given to the tool. 1
The rod 18 is normally positioned at its highest point in the spindle, with the tool 9 'at its lowest'diameter, and as the work proceeds the rod is forced gradually downwards,
expanding the grinding stones as before men-' tioned. -The initial position of the rod can be varied, by adjustment of the screw 28, to conform to variations in thesize of the bore of a cylinder, such as. frequently occurs in practice: In manycases the size of the bore is less than the requirements, and to permit the grinding tool to conform thereto it can be reduced'in diameter to less than the normal provision. After the proper adjustments, if any, are made, the tools of one machine all operate c'oincidently and independently, and if it is desired to proportionately increase the diameter-pf any particular cylinder this can beaccomplished by adjustment of the micrometer screw of the tool that is operating therein. f
Some machines of the mentioned are provided with means for interrupting" the movement 'of lapping mechanism at the end I of a predetermined number of movements thereof, and the movements of the controlling devices set forth herein can be synchronized therewith, so that" the lapping tools willbe collapsed andwithdrawn from the cylinder and supports thereof.- Applicant does not tion set forth herein; as changes can be made in the form and arran' would still be t e scope of the invention. 1 I f p What I.claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: 1.
