Patented Feb. 17,1931
UNITED STATES ra rralvr orF cE FREDERICK w. HEISLER, OFSGHENECIADY, NEW YORK 1 SUPPORT FOR MIDDLE GUIDES: LOCOMOTIVES Application filed May 17,
This invention relates generally tomeans for supporting the crosshead guides located, between the frames of locomotives, and more in the locomotive structure in a stronger,
lighter, and more efficient manner than heretofore possible.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1,
is aside view, in elevation, of a portion of a locomotive comprising the device; Fig. 2, a rear view of the device as mounted on the locomotive; Fig. 3, a side view in elevation, of the device; Fig. 4, an enlarged plan view of the device; and Fig. 5, an end view, in elevation, of the same.
In the practice of the invention, referring descriptively to the specific embodiment thereof herein exemplified in Figs. 1 and 2, the integral structure 1, is mounted on the frames 2, of a locomotive comprising in addition to said frames 2, the power cylinder 3, in which is the piston rod 4, connected to the crosshead 5, which is operatively associated with the guide 6. The guide 6, thus positioned between the frames 2, 2, is supported at its forward portion 7 on suitable means attached to the cylinder 3, and its rearward portion is supported by the structure 1. Formed on the guide 6, is a suitable bolting flange 8, secured to the seat 9, formed on the structure 1, by means of the bolts 11, and has interposed therebetween the liners 10, through which latter means the adjustment and alignment of the guide 6, is eflected.
The locomotive frames 2, 2, have also housed therein an axle 12, j ournalled in the boxes 13, 13, cooperating with the rocking levers 14 of the lateral motion device hereinbefore mentioned, said levers 14: being 'piv otally' mounted on the rock shafts 15, 15,
1929. Serial No. 363,890.
7 which are seated in the fulcrum bosses 16,16,
formed integrally with the structure'l.
. Referring now to Figs. 3 to 5 inclusive, it
will be seenthat the structure 1, comprises two pairs of'feet, 1718, 19-20, joined respecas 21, 22,and connected at their upper portions by the member 23, which also servesas a guide support, the seat 9, being formedthereon for that purpose. The feet 17-18, 1920, are
adapted tobe firmly seated on the frames 2, 2, and are further provided withfianges 24E, affordingmeans for bolting them securely to said frames. .The connecting members 21, 22, may be formed with any appropriate cross-section, and have incorporated with themthe. bosses 16, which serve for fulcrums or seats for the rock shafts 15 of the lateral motion device rockers 14: let,- which span the axle 12. and cooperate with the axle boxes 13. 7
It will at once be seen by those skilled in the art that the structure herein described effects a great saving in weight over the complex assembly formerly used, and that the permissibledistribution of the metal in such a structure results in a stronger and more rapidly and easily positioned assembly than heretofore possible.
The invention claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A device for use in locomotives, comprising four supporting feet adapted for attachment to the side frames of'the locomo' tive, means for supporting a middle guide thereon, and means for supporting a lateral motion device thereon.
2. In a locomotive, a support for a middle guide, comprising pairs of supporting members mounted on opposite frame members; means, including a guide support, joining the pairs of supporting members; and means whereby one of said pairs of supporting members support a lateral motion device.
3. In a locomotive, a support comprisin in an integral casting, pairs of members spanning an axle and adapted to have a lateral motion device mounted thereon, and means 1 tively by the substantially arched members in an integral casting pairs of members mounted on opposite frame members and adapted to span an axle; means for supporting a lateral motion device; and a member joining the pairs of members, adapted to support a middle crosshead guide.
5. In a locomotive comprising frame niembers, a crosshead guide therebetween, and a driving axle having journal boxes mounted thereon, the combination of a guide support having two pairs of feet, each pair mounted on opposite frame members and adapted to span the axle; and bosses formed in each pair adapted to receive the rock shaft of a lateral motion device.
6. In a locomotive comprising frame members having journal boxes for an axle mounted therein, and a crosshead guide therebetween, the combination of a support having two pairs of feet mounted on opposite frame members; means, joining the feet, adapted to support the crosshead guide; and means associated with the feet, adapted to support a lateral motion device cooperating with the journal boxes.
7. In a locomotive, side frames; a support comprising four spaced members supported on the side frames providing thereby an open transverse space between same, and an open longitudinal space between same; lateral motion devices disposed in the transverse space and secured to the support; and a guide extending into the longitudinal space and secured to the support.
