PDING OR BLE'IING' DEVICE A Filed Jan. 9, 195o 2 sheets-sheet 1 y, A torney Patented Feb. 17, 1931 onAuNcnY C. CHAMBERLAIN, oF IONIA, MICHIGAN i PADDING 0R TABLE'IING DEVICE Application lecl January 9, 1930. Serial No. 419,608.
The present invention relates to a padding or tableting device and ha-s for its prime ob- `ject to provide a structure which is practical and useful for the purpose of manufacturing 5 pads, tablets and any other book formation which are to beheld intact with glue, cement or any other holding or sticking material.
Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a device 10 of this nature which provides a means of padding or tableting paper rapidly and accurately and without waste and puts sufficient pressure on the paper to be padded d or tableted to prevent the paper from becoming disengaged by natural or accidental causes and also prevents the glue, cement or other material from spreading, soaking, or in any other way coming in Contact with 2o any part of the paper other than the extreme edge padded or tableted.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable, easy to manipulate, compact and convenient in its arrangement of parts, adjustable, thoroughly efficient and reliable in use and operation, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Vith the above and numerous other objects in View as will appear the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novelfeatures of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device embodying` the features of my invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail vertical section takensubstantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, 4
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail horizontal section taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a detail view of one 'corner of the frame.
Referring tothe drawing in detail it will be seen that the letter F denotes generally an arch or inverted U-shaped frame structure which as` the present embodiment of the invention comprises a cross bar 5 with legs 6 depending downwardly therefrom. Brace plates 'fare riveted to the bars 5 and 6 to securely hold them together.
The bottoms of the legs have cleats 9 fixed thereto soja hat 'theapparatus will stand up on a table, work bench or the like or, if
desired, may be riveted or otherwise secured thereto. Y j
A `pair of pressure applying devices are mounted on the bar. 5. Each pressure` applying device comprises a foot 10 fixed to the lower end of a stem 11 which is longitulli bai
dinally slotted as at 12. The bolt 13 is mounted in the bar 5 to extend through the slot 12. and threadedly receives a nut 14 which may be tightened to hold the stem and foot in desired adjusted position. A lever 15 is rockably mounted intermediate its ends as at 16 in the lower portion of the stem 11 so as to extend through the lower portion of the slot 12. y
'A iiexible rod V17 is pivotally engaged as at 18 with one end of the lever and extends upwardly through an opening in a plate 19 which is loosely mounted on top of the inember 5 by a bolt 2O so that ,the` rodV 17 is held in a stationary position by the binding trip obtained by the walls of the openingin the plate 19 thereon.
A In operation, the pack isplacedin position within the frame F and the nuts 14 are loosened to permit the feet 10 to rest on the pack. The forward ends of the levers 15 are then swung downwardly on the pivots 16 and the initial movement of the levers swings the rear ends of said levers upwardly to raise the rods 17. This movement of the rods 17 is arrested by the plates 19 binding on said rods in the manner illustrated in broken lines in Figure 3 of the drawing. With the rods 17 thus secured 'against further vertical movement, the levers 15 will then swing on the pivots 18 on the lower ends of the rods and in this manner the desired pressure may be applied to the feet 10 on the pack or the like.
The nuts 14 are again tightened to retain the feet under pressure on the pack or the like after Which the glue' or other substance may be applied to the pack. The clutch plates 1 9 Will permit the rods 17 to be adjusted vertically when it is desired to accommodate packs of different height.
It is thought that the construction, operation, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art Without a more detaileddescription thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above descri-ption.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement'of parts maybe resorted to Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, What l claim as new is: y
1. A device of the character described comprising 'an inverted U-shaped frame having a cross bar and a pair of depending legs secured to a base, a bolt mounted in said cross bar and extending forwardly of the frame, an elongated slotted stem slidably mounted on said bolt, said slotted stem being in a vertical plane With said depending legs said bolt having a tightening nut adapted to retain the slotted stem in an adjusted position on said cross bar, a pressure foot rigidly secured to the lower end of said slotted stem, a lever eX- tending horizontally through said slotted stem, said lever pivotally mounted adjacent the base of said slotted stem, a rod pivotally engaging the end of said lever and extending upwardly in substantial parallel relation to said slotted stein, a plate loosely mounted on the top portion of said cross frame and eX- tending rearwardly of the cross frame, said plate provided with an opening adapted to receive the free end of said rod.
2. A device of the character described coinpri'sing a support, an adjustable's'tem shiftably mounted on the support, an apertured clutch plate loosely mounted on the support, 'a lever pivotally mounted on the stem, a rod pivotally connected to the lever and extending adjustably through the clutch plate and engageable by said plate for retaining the rod against upward movement by the lever, and means for securing the stem in adjusted position.
3. A device of the'character described comprising a support, an apertured clutch plate loosely mounted on the support, a threaded shankjmounted on the support, a slotted stem slidably mounted on the shank, a pressure foot on one end of the stem, a lever pivotally connected, intermediate its ends, to an intermediate portion of the stem, a rod pivotally connected, at one end, to one end portion of the lever and extending adjustably through the clutch plate and adapted for frictional engagement by the clutch plate for retaining the rod against upward movement by the lever, and a'nut threaded on the shank for securing the stem against sliding movement.
4. A device of the character described comprising a support, a stem, a pressure foot on the stem, an operating lever connected to the stem, and means adjustably connected with the support for operatively connecting the lever thereto.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature.
