This invention relates -to closures 'forcontainers, .and is ?herein shown applied to a metallic barrel ihe'ad, although it may, :of course,-be usediin any container wall.
One of the objects of the invention is .to provide aniimproved-closure orcapain which the component-lein'entsaare so=designed as to enable them to be"economically and otherwise satisfactorily :made by stamping operations "and to provide a closure which is strong, durable and-reliable in use. Another object :is to provide-a =newia'nd improved cap adapted for the reception of sealing "means.
Theinvention will be understood fromthe following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Figure '1 is arplan' viewofthe cap; F igure 2 is a central, "vertical, sectional viewyof "the cap showingiit threaded intoa suitable sput or cap seat:int-erlockediwith a contamerwall and Figure-dis a plan view of a metal tab adapted to be anchored inplace intermediate the folds- (if-the doubleiloc'k seam, as shown in Figurei2 and to serveajsa securing memher for asealing wire.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral indicates a barrelheadprovided with a suitable bung-spat 111, herein shown as constructed from sheet'metal and having interlocking engagements with the barrel head at'12. The sput.llisprovidedwith'a depending internally screw threaded flange 13, adapted to rece-ive'the screw threaded element of the closure embodying this invention. This sput constructiontwlthout the seal-ab tac'hing means hereinafter mentioned) is described and claimedin my co-pendmg application SenNo. 222,409 filed September 28, 1927.
The'closureis made up of two primary parts. namely, a sheet metal cup-shaped member anda sheet'metal cover plate ortop member 16. The cup-shaped member 15 is provided on its cylindrical portion with screw threads adapted .forengagement with the internally screw threaded flange 13 of the sput. Theflat end'wallil'f'ofithe cup-shaped member may be provi dedwith a plurality of projections18, which: are struck up from the wall by siiitabledi'es-the dies-being prefer- :ber is adapted to fit.
ably'so constructed that the metal forming the projections is sheared from the metal of the wall 17 with the result that the projections'18-are iii-the form 'o'f metal slugs which .tlghtly fit the openings 19 within whichthey are frictionallyheld. These projections 19 are adapted-to fit into a plurality of depress1ons21 formed in the cover plate 16 in proper relation -'to receive the projections 18, the
spect to the cup-shapcd member 15, when the closure is being applied to orremoved from the sput 11. The bottom of the cup-shaped member 15 is adapted to engage throughout its entire area the central portion of the cover plate 16 as shown in Figure 2: and the cupshaped member 15 is united-to the cover plate 16 by welding as shown at 22 at a spot centrally of the group of depressions 21. The cover plateis bent down aboutthe cylindrical portion ofthe cup-shaped member 15, so as to provide apocket or depression 24 into which the closed end of the cup-shaped mempocket 24 to the cup-shaped member 15 is such that centralization of the cup-shaped member with respect to the cover plate 16 is assured during assembling. The cover plate 16 isformed with. an outwardly projecting flange portion 25 which serves as a gasket seator gasket supporting portion, adapted for the :reception of a gasket .26 which is clamped .into firm engagement with the gasket seat 27 of the sput 11 intermediate the screw threaded portion 13 thereof and its outwardly and downwardly inclined. wall 28. The flange 25 terminates in. a downwardly and outwardly projecting apron 29 which serves to reinforce the coverplate 16 against distortion. particularly when the closure is :being applied to the sput 11, and carries at its lower edge aplurality of outwardly and upwardly projecting wrench receiving ears The relation of the be passed through the perforated end of a sealing tab 32'], one end of which is contined as shown in liignre 2 in the interlocking connection between the barrel head 10 and the sput 11. v I
\Vhile only one form of the invention is herein shown and described, it will be understood thatvarious ehanges'may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
hat is claimed is:
l. A container closure comprising a sheet metal cup-shaped member having an end wall v and provided with screw threads on its cylin drieal portion, and a sheet metaltop member adapted to receive in abutting relation thereto the end wall of said cup-shaped member, said top member having a gasket supporting portion extending outwardly therefrom in the vicinity of the point of peri 'iheral engage ment o1 the cup-shaped member with the top member, said gasket supporting portion carrying at its outer margin an apron terminating at spaced points in wrench-receiving ears adapted to facilitaterotation of the closure in applying it to and removing it from a container, said top member and the end'wall of said cup-shaped member being welded together.
2. A closure comprising a sheet metal cupshaped member having an end wall provided with slugs struck up therefrom and serving as interlocking elements. said cup-shaped member being provided with screw threads on its cylindrical portion, and a sheet metal top member adapted to receive in abutting relation theerto the end wall of said cup-shaped member. said top member having depressions formed therein in which said interlocking elements tit and having a gasket supporting portion extending outwardly therefrom in the vicinity of the point of peripheral engagement of the cupshaped member with the top member, said gasket supporting portion arrying at its outer marginan apron terminating at spaced points-in wrench receiving ears adapted to facilitate rotation of the closure in applying it to and removing it from a container. said top member and the end portion of said cup-shaped member being welded together.
A container closure comprising a sheet metal cupshaped member having a round flat end portion and provided with screw threads on its cylindrical portion, and a sheet metal top member having a depression having a round flat-bottom and into which the roundfiat end portion ofsaid cupshaped mem her titswithitsrolunl fiat end portion in abutting relation to and throughout the area of the round flat bottom of the depression in said top member, said top memberalso having a gasket supporting portion extending out-- wardly. from the edge of the depression and an apron extending at an angle to said gas- FRANK G.
