Description

Feb. 17, 1931. H. E. IRWIN 3 792 541 DISPLAY DEVICE Filed Sept; 19, 1928 Patented Feb. 17 1931 UNITED: STATES 1 HENRY 'E. IRWIN, or mmonia, NEW J ass-l mme R: a. nnywoon coil;-
BANY, me, n coRroRA-rIo-non nnw YORK Application filed September 19, 30(-l,878.;
My invention relates to a device by means of which-samplesof greeting cards and of materials tobe used in the linings of envelopes distributed J therewith, may be dis- 5 played together in such relation as to indicate the appearance of the linings in the fin- I ishedenvelopes and to permit comparison thereof with the color schemes of the particular cards being displayed therewith,
without necessitating display of the finished envelopes.
Manufacturers of greeting cards, prior to the time that tissue-lined envelopes were used, in displaying and selling the cards to the distributing trade, customarily sampled the card itself without any envelope bemg shown, but as soon as'envelopes were used with lmingsit was then necessary to dlsplay the envelope showing the'lining, not only for the purpose of indicating the quality of the lining itself, but also to indicate how the lining harmonizes with the color scheme of the card.
Greeting cards are reproduced from 2 sketches, some of which are in full color, and
some just in the black and white, inwhich case the color schemes are made after the cards are printed or stamped. Whichever way is employed, it is not practicable to match the lining to the design of the card until the card is completely finished. as'to thecolor of the stock and thecolor of thedesign, Therefore, in getting out a new line of greet ing cards, it has been the custom for themanufacturer eitherto buy for each designmade a number ofenvelopes with different linings, in order to be able, when the cards were sampled, to get one of the liningsto harmon "that the tar method-Tha diatom-Y loss;o f time in getting the; sample cards out, also considerable "expense for labor in lining the envelopes by hand.
The present invention has for an object a saving in expense as compared with the com pletely' manufactured envelope or the hand lined envelope for sampling, and also a saving of time in mounting the display cards.
which in turn makes it possible to advance the date of the showing of the new line.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description and the accompanying drawings, in which:
5 Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my improved display, device, comprising a supporting sheet member and a sample greeting card carried thereby; and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates generally a supporting sheet member, which may be of cardboard or any relatively stiff, sheet material. 7
Lines 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are shown on the sheet member 1 to simulate the outline and the lines of intersection of the folds of the back of an envelope, and in the space defined by the lines 2,4; and 5, and conforming sub stantially to the shape and size'of the opening normally coveredby the flap of an envelope,'is an opening 8. A sheet or strip 9 of lining material of a color and appearance adapted to harmonize with the color scheme .of the card being displayed is shown as secured or afixed to the back of the card in such position as to cover the opening 8. The greeting card 10 is mounted on the front of the'card in such position as to be adj a'centthe openingS in order that the color of the lining 4 may be easily compared with the color scheme ofthecar to r A simpleandiconvenient way of securing i the card and the 'liningmaterial to the'sheet l'is by means of a suitable adhesive. gIt will be understood, of course, that any other method of either permanently or temporarily attaching the lining material and the card to the-support may be employed. a I
- Various changes in the details of the construction may be made without departing from the invention which is not to be deemed as limited other than as indicated in the appended claim.
VVhat I claim is:
In a device of the character described, a sheet having the outlines of an envelope and the lines of intersection of the folds thereof depicted thereon and provided With an opening therethrough, the edges of which are determined by that portion of said outlines and the lines of intersection that define the flap, and a strip of lining material aflixed to the hack of said sheet to cover said opening and to display the lining therethrongh.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
HENRY E. IRWIN.
