ALEXANDER ANDERSON, OF LONDON, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRAW-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,251, dated J 11110 27, 1876, application filed April 18, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER ANDER- SON, of London, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and Improved Straw-Cutter, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to a straw-cutter in which the cutting-box is arranged obliquely to the plane in which the cutter works; and it consists in the combination of a gage with avertically-sliding cutter and diagonal feedbox, for regulating the feeding of the hay and straw to the cutter, the said gage being so mounted and connected with the cutter that it moves out of the way of the cut material to allow it freedom for escape when the cutter acts, and moves back .in time to perform its function when the cutter rises, and is fixed adjustably to gage the material longer or shorter, as desired.
Figure l is an end. elevation, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line a m, Fig. 1, of my improved cutter.
A is the box, and B the cutter, which are arranged diagonally to each other, as shown in Fig. 2. 0 represents the notched or ragged edge of the cutter, and D represents the gage for the material to be out. The cutter is a long taper blade of similar form to the knives employed for cutting hay in the mow. The upper end is connected to the lever D, and the lower end is connected to a block sliding up and down freely in the slotted guide E. The gage D is also pivoted at its lower end to this sliding block, and in the upper part it has a slot, F, working on the guide-stud G. At both ends it is titted against washers H, which are removable at will to put in thick or thin ones, according to the length or thickness it is desired to out the material. A spring, 1, is
.connected to the lever for storing up power when the cutter is lifted to assist in the cutting stroke.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the slotted gage l), guide-stud G, and slotted guide E, with the cutting-knife B and feed-box A, all constructed and relatively arranged as herein set forth.
ALEXANDER ANDERSON.
