The invention relates to a control for gas cocks supplying fuel to different burners in a common chamber.
An object of the invention is to provide a control device of the character described whereby but one of the gas cocks may be open at a given time.
Another object of the invention is to provide in association with the control device, means operative to positively retain the gas cocks in fixed relation.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the character described which is simple in structure, positive in action, and may readily be associated with stoves of present structure as an attach? ment therefor.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of thepreferred form of the invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood,
however, that variations in the showing made by the said drawings and description may be adopted within the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.

In the development of the stove art as applied to stoves utilizing gaseous fuel at the burners thereof, it has been found that if two independent burners are disposed in a closed chamber such as that provided by a solid fuel fire-box or a combined oven and broiling chamber, the turning on of one burner while the other is lit may result in an explosion, while a simultaneous burning of the burners will so vitiate the air in the chamber which provides the secondary air supply for "the burners that satisfactory combustion is prevented, particularly at an upper burner. Accordingly, the best practice decrees that the turning on and/orburning of the two burners at the same time must be positively prevented, and it is to a control device for such a purpose that the present invention particularly relates.
As particularly illustrated in Figures lto 3, the device of our invention is applied to control cocks 11 and 12 of the respective upper and lower gas burners 13 and 1 1. for a solid fuel fire box 16, such burners being arranged-for use with the fire box for both kindling and top heating purposes. The fire box, it will be noted, forms part of a gas stove 17 having a cooking top 7 beneath which the fire box and a top-gas-burner chamber are disposed in contiguous relation with a common wall 18 between them. As here shown, the burners 13 and 14 are disposed outside the fire box adjacent the wall 18, which wall' is perforated to permit the projection of gaseous fuel through the burner nozzles 19 into the fire box.
The top gas and fire box burners are arranged to be supplied with fuel from a common manifold pipe 21, such pipe having hori zontal and vertical portions 22 and 23 connected by an elbow joint '24 and disposed in a vertical plane at the front of the top gas burner chamber. Preferably, and as here shown, the lower end of the manifold por tion 23 is connected to a horizontally disposed feed pipe 26 lying alongthe wall 18 below the fire box burner 14 whereby the manifold is arranged to receive fuel from the rear of the stove and the feed pipe 26 is effectively concealed. In the present embodiment of the invention the cook 11 is mounted on and connected with the horizontal manifold portion 22, while the cook 12 is mounted on and connected with the manifold portion 23, it being noted that the pivotal axes of the valve plugs of the cocks 11 and 12 are respectively vertical and horizontal and lie in a common plane. The cocks 11 and 12 are arranged for threaded engagement in perforations provided in the manifold, and the discharge nozzles 27 and 28 thereof are arranged to discharge directly into the air mixers 29 and 31 of the respective burners.
It will now be noted that the control means of our invention is directly associated with the valve plug spindles or stems of the cooks 11 and 12, and operates in such manner that only one of the cocks may be open at any time. As is usual with cocks of the type shown, the valve plugs are tapered and spindle portions extend from both ends of the plug outwardly of the cock body. As here shown, the spindle portions 32 and 33 which extend from the larger ends of the plugs of cocks 11 and 12 respectively are provided with operating handles 34, while the other spindle ends 36 and 37 of the respective cocks carry screws 39 and 41 between the heads of which and the cock bodies are dis posed compression springs 42 operative to resiliently maintain the valve plugs seated.
Extending radially from the spindle portion 33 of the cock 12 is an arm 43, such arm being here shown formed integral with the spindle. Mounted on the manifold portion 23 is a bracket member 44 having an arm 46 extending radially from the manifold portion 23 and perforated adjacent its outer end to slidably receive a plunger rod 47, such rod being arranged for longitudinal reciprocation in a line substantially parallel to the manifold portion 23 and perpendicular to the axis of the spindle of the cook 12 and being in s'ubstantialy coplanar relation with the arm 46. A connection of the rod 47 to the arm 43 is effected by means of a link 48 movable in the plane of movement of the arm 43, it being noted that when the cock 12 is in turned-oft position, the arm 46 is arranged to extend substantially horizontally and at right angles to the rod 47 and that when the valve spindle is rotated through a quarter turn to open the cock, the rod is projected generally away from the cock 12 and toward the cock 11.
Means are provided on the cook 11 for cooperation with the rod 47 to effect the desired control of the manipulation of the cocks. Mounted on the spindle portion 36 of the cook 11 for rotation therewith is a member 49, such member providing a plane lower surface 51 extending at right angles to the spindle aXis and a forward edge 52 of the member. The spindle portion 36 is preferably polygonal and the member 49 is perforated to receive the said spindle portion, the member being here shown interposed between the spring 42 and the head of screw 39-in this manner, the member 49 is caused to rotate with the spindle and is removably held thereon.
It will now be noted that when both cocks are closed, the free end of rod 47 is arranged to lie just below the plane of the surface 51 of member 49, while the edge 52 of the member 49 is so disposed with respect to the rod 47 that the latter may be projected in front of it. When, however, the upper cock 11 is opened, the member 49 will overlie the rod 47 in the path of movement thereof, as shown in Figure 3, whereby an opening of the lower cock 12 is positively prevented, the relation of the edge 52 of member 49 being such that a very slight opening movement of the cook 11 will cause the member 49 to overlie the rod 47. On the other hand, when the lower cock 12 is open, the rod 47 will lie forwardly of the edge 52 of the member 49, thereby serving as a stop to prevent the movement of said member and an opening movement of the cock 1.1, it being noted that a very slight movement of the rod 47 out of its normal position is preferably arranged to dispose the rod in the plane of movement of the member 49. In this manner, the rod 47 and member 49 serve as stops for each other depending on which cock is open. It will now be obvious that the control device now described is positive in action and, while permitting either cock to be opened, will positively prevent an opening of a second cock when the first is even slightly opened.
It will be obvious that the proper operation of the control device now described is contingent on the maintenance of the previously described relation between the cooks 11 and 12, and since these cocks are screwed into the manifold, the fixing thereof in position involves preventing their rotation about the axes of their manifold engaging portions. The lower cock 12 is held against rotative dis placement by reason of the hinged connection of the link 48 between the arm 43 and plunger 47, since the latter is held to movement in a fixed line and any rotative displacement of the cock would be resisted by reason of the hinged connection of the link to the arm 43 and plunger. The upper cock 11, on the other hand, requires the provision of a special means for holding it in proper position, and as here shown, such means are provided in association with the cock control device. An arcuate slot 53 is formed in the member 49 and through which a screw 54 extending fromthe bracket arm 46 is arranged to engage with the screw-head closely overlying the upper surface of the member 49.
