UNITED STATES PATENT Ormea.
BENJAMIN SHOUP, OF PEKIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO ANDREW J. HODGES, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Speeication forming part of Letters Patent No. l 79,228, dated June 27, 1876; application filed November 16, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SHoUP, of
the city of Pekin, in the county of rlazewell,
in the State of Illinois, have invented an Im provemeut in Harvesters; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in which- Figure l representsa longitudinal elevation; Fig. 2, a plan of the operating half of above.
My improvement consists in the use of a single lever for elevating or lowering the reaping platform of harvesting-machines,together with the sickle and carrier or draper, and in holding the same at required levels in reaping; also in rotating the draper and vibrating the sickle-bar by direct gearing with a crown or bevel wheel on the axle ofthe nearest supporting-wheel of the machine.
The first part of the improvement is carried out by erecting a post ouA the rear bar of the reaping-platform, which is hinged to the front bar of the wheel-frame, (a not novel form of connection,) the latter being also hinged to the transverse terminal bar of the draft-tongue of the machine, (also a common form of connection.) To said post a lever is pivoted, which extends back to and is pivoted on a second vertical post erected upon said transverse tongue-bar, so that a depression of the rear end of the lever raises or lowers the reaping-platform-at the same time, when set in a detent, maintains the rigidity between the platform, wheel-frame, and
y tongue.
In the drawings, which represent one of the forms in which I carry out my irnprovement, A represents the harvester-tongue, ter- -I ininating, as usual, at the wheel-frame B, in
lrises a detent, x, for the handle of said lever.
B represents the wheel-frame, of the usual construction, inwhich the supporting-wheels E are set. On lthe front bar c of this frame the usual hinge f connects the same with the reaping-platform O.
From the rear bar of the platform C rises a vertical post, i, to which the front end of the lever D is pivoted. There are. several other similar posts, z', rising from said bar l, all of which may be braced by diagonally-descending rods to rear extensions of the joints of the platform C, and the top of the same by rods to the post cl on the tongue A b. D, the platform-operating lever, pivoted, as before said, infront to the post c' of the platform O, and behind to the post d of the tongue, and is adjustably detained by a post, x, having notched or movable pin; F, the bevelwheel at the end of the axle of one of the supporting-wheels; G, its engaged pinion, set upon a horizontal shaft, H, supported by arms 7c 7c, projecting from the frame B. I is a short connecting swivel-shaft, attached to the shaft H by universal joint u, and to the shaft Kof the pinion L by a socketed connection, for the purpose of maintaining a working attachment between the wheel F and said pinion L, which rotates the apronrollers 0 P, when the level of the reapingplatform and sickle is altered.
The shaft L is journaled in the rear bar l of the said platform, to allow its pinion K to engage with the apron-pinions M N of the rollers O P beneath. Q, a disk and wrist-pin at the forward end of the apron-roller O, which, by means of a rod, p, vibrates the sickle-bai-R, though this connection may be made from the other roller with equal effect. S represents the reel-supporters.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The horizontal platform operating lever D, with its pivotal post z' rising from the reaping-platfbrm, and its second pivotal post, el, rising from the tongue A or its cross-piece b, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, with the platform C, of the pivotal post z', lever D, pivotal post d, attached to the tongue A or its cross-bar b, said lever being provided with detent .cv upon the tongue A, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. The harvesting-machine provided with bevel-wheel F, shaft H, pinion G, swiveljoint provement in harvesters I have hereunto set n, soeketed shaft I, pinion-shaft K, pinion L, my hand this 30th day of September', A. D.
and apron-roller pinions M N, crank Q, and 1875.
connecting-rod p to sickle, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes de- Witnesses: e
scribed. H. P. WILBER,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing im- BENJAMIN SHOUP.
