This invention relates to the construction of cylinder heads for internal combustion engines.
According to the present invention the inner chamber or valve box of the cylinder head, which is in communication with the combustion chamber, is completely free at its lower end from the outer peripheral wall of the head but is connected to the upper part of this wall and to the top of the head by inclined ribs, the length and the moment of resistance of these ribs being so calculated that when the inner part of the cylinder head expands the ribs bend without liability to fracture. The lower end of the inner chamber may be strengthened by the application of a cylindrical ring made of an exceedingly ductile material and which may be shrunk-011.
Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing illustrate a construction according to the invention in respective longitudinal and cross sections, applied by way of example to" a cylinder head or cover for an engine with four valves in each head.
Referring to the drawing it will be seen that as previously indicated the inner chamber or Valve box of the head 1 is completely free at its lower end 2 from the outer peripheral wall 3 a space 4 being left betweenthese two parts. 5 is the upper wall or top of the head-and 6 are the valve ports.
According to the invention the lower end 2 of the head is connected to the upper part of the wall 3 and to the top 5 by means of relatively narrow but long inclined ribs 7. The length of the ribs 7 and their moment of resistance are calculated so that when the innerpart of the head expands the ribs bend without liability to fracture. 8 is a cylindrical strengthening ring which according to the invention is applied to the lower end 2 and may be shrunk-on.
I claim 1. A cylinder head for internal combustion engines comprising an upper wall, an outer peripheral wall dependingdrom said upper wall, an'inner chamber, forming a valve box and provided with valve ports, the peripheral wall and separated therefrom by a space and a plurality of inclined ribs connecting the lower end of said chamber to the upper part of said outer peripheral wall and to the upper wall of the cylinder head, said ribs being dimensioned to bend without fracture on expansion of the peripheral wall of the inner chamber.
2. A cylinder head for internal combustion engines comprising an upper wall, an outer peripheral wall depending from said upper wall, an inner chamber forming a valve box and provided with valve ports, the peripheral Wall of said chamber being completely free at its lower end from said outer peripheral wall and separated therefrom by a space, a plura-lity of inclined ribs connecting the lower end of said chamber to the upper part of said outer peripheral wall and to the upper wall of the cylinder head, said ribs being dimensioned to bend without fracture on expansion of the peripheral wall of the inner chamber, and a strengthening ring of an exceedingly ductile material, which may be shrunk-on applied to the lower end of said peripheral wall,
so that said peripheral wall is released from the inner pressure.
