This invention covers improvements in record-controlled tabulating machines, and has for its principal object the provision of devices which will automatically stop the operation of the machine when a predetermined number of entries have been made on the record sheet.
Another object is to provide means for printing a total one or more times without m clearing the accumulator. f
In certaih classes of work done by tabulating machines the records are printed on comparatively short record sheets, and sometimes totals are carried from one sheet to the next.
The devices disclosed in my present invention include manually settable means causing the machine to stop when a predetermined number of printing operations have occurred. This obviates the necessity of the operator 2o watching the machine-to prevent overrunning the end of the sheet.
After a sheet or page has been filled a total may be printed at the bottom of the sheet and that same total printed again at the head of the next sheet, thus carrying along the total until all entries are finished on a plurality of sheets.

Reference will now be had to Fig. 1 which shows the general arrangement of a printing tabulating machine with my present inven- 50 tion attached. The tabulating machine itself is fully described in the copending application of Clair D. Lake, Serial No. 639,153, filed May 15, 1923. It comprises a card feeding and analyzing section 20, a counter or accumulator section of five accumulators designated generally at 22, and at the right a printing section 24. Below the counters is the control section 26. The section embodying my invention is shown at 28'. The reset shaft 30 extends across the machine in front of the counters and at each counter there is a .zero button 32 which controls the totaltalring and reset operations of that particular counter.
The machine is driven by tabulating motor TM through belt 34 and pulley 36 on the machine. In connection with pulley 36 the usual tabulating clutch is provided of thetype indicated'at 38 in Fig. 2. The clutch is controlled lg magnet 40 through latch lever 42 and is a apte to couple the motor TM with the card feedin section of the machine.
Cards are fed downwardly one at a time from magazine 42 by picker device 44 into the control of successive pairs of feed rolls 46 that carry the cards past the upper control brushes 48 and the lower analyzing brushes 50 after which the cards are deposited on the discharge stack 52.
Fig. 7 shows the reset motor RM and. details of the reset and. paper feed devices contained within section 54 of the machine and the relationship of the present invention" thereto.
As is fully explained in the above copending application, when a total-taking and reset operation is to be carried out, motor RM is started and reset magnet 56 energized. The energization' 'of magnet 56, through the instrumentality of clutch device 58 actuated by magnet-controlled arm 60, turns shaft 62 one revolution. Shaft 62 carries a totaltaking cam 64 and a gear 66 which has teeth in only half its circumference. During the firsthalf of the revolution of shaft 62, cam 64 through arm 68 actuates the printing mechanism to print the total standing on the accumulators at that time. During the second half revolution of shaft 62 the toothed portion of gear 66 rotates gear 70 and reset 1M now be described.

The devices designated generally as 72 are rocked in connection with all printing operations to actuate the paper feed by means of vertical link 74.
, For the purposes of my present invention I attach to device 72 an upstanding arm 76 which is rocked with 72 whenever a paper feeding operation occurs. Pivotally attached to the upper end of 76 is one end of a substantially horizontal link 78,-the other end bein pivotally attached to rocking member 80 Member 80 is freely mounted, on shaft 82 (Figs. 4, 5 and 6) on which is fast the disc 84 on the'rim of which are cut theequally spaced teeth 86. Corresponding to veach tooth 86 and adjacent thereto is .a hole 88 drilled in disc 84. w
Freely mounted on shaft 82 and extending horizontally therefrom is arm 90. The outer end of arm 90 has formed on it a horizontal lip 92 from which extends downwardly the contact controlling non-conducting stud 94. Arm 90 is also provided with cam surfaces 96 and 98 and stop lug 100, all for purposes to be later explained. Spring 99 holds arm 90 normally in raised position against pin 101. Carried on the upper portion of the free end of arm 80'is the ratchet pawl 102, pivoted at 104, and normally held 1n engagement with a notch on disc 84 by spring 106. On the back of dog-102 ispin 108 arranged for engagement by surface 96 at the proper time. Mounted on the frame is a retainmgt awl 110 drawn into-engagement with feet 86 by spring 112. On pawl 110 is a pin 114 arranged for engagement by surface 98 at the prop'r time in'the cycle of operation. bpiral spring 116 serves to draw disc 84, when free, to homeposition with its lug 118 against stop 120.
On the front of the device is a' settable dial 122: (Figs. 3 and 6) having a graduated scale 124 corresponding with holes 88 .and cooperating with a fixed index 126. Set into the dial at zero position is a plunger 128 pressed inwardly .by spring 130 bearing against collar 132 ou -the "plunger; Collar 132 also serves to limit the inward travel of the plun er. The outer end of the plunger is provid ed with knob 134 for the convenience of the operator. In normal position plunger 128 is always in a'hole 88 in disc 84.

In operation, if the operator wants} the machine to stop when the paper feed .has been actuated any particular number of times, 'say 14, he withdraws plunger 128 from engagement with disc 84 by means of knob 134, then turns dial 122 until the 14 graduation is at index 126 and lets plunger 128 enter the hole'88 with which it is then aligned (Figs. 3, 4 and 6). By depressin key 178, arm 90 may be manually move by pin 179 to the stop position at any time and ratchet disc 84 allowed to return to home position.
The primary purpose of the mechanism above described is to manipulate electric contacts by which the action of the machine is controlled. A full understanding of how such control is effected may be obtained from the wiring diagram. in Fig. 9 which covers diagrammatically the circuits in the unlatch arm 138 from lip 92- in the usual total-taking ositions. ,The that zero button' 32 is unatehed prevents the wellknown ty e of tabulating machine such as is described in the application above referred to. I shall describe here only such portions of the diagram as are essential to a working knowledge of my present invention. 1

the zero button 32 being represented conventionally in the usual manner and the contacts controlled thereby being designated 180. For in present purpose I provide switches 182 by which each zero button contact 180 may be bridged if desired.
The middle part of the diagram'relates to the usual automatic control devices with which we are not particularly concerned.
In the circpit between stop key 192 and the rightside of line I insert contact 170. while in the circuit with automatic start key 186 and stop key 188 I insert contact 160.
Contact 150 is placed in at circuit to bridge start key 190.
When the parts are brought to the position shown in Fig. 5 the machine stops because contact 170 opens which has the same efiect as if the usual 'stop key 192 were depressed. Also, while in that position a total-taking and reset operation cannot be initiated automatically through automatic reset switch 194, be cause the switch is in circuit with the open contact 170. Neither can the machine automatically restart because open contact 160 breaks the circuit through automatic start switch 186.
If under these conditions it is desired to take a total and reset, reset key 196 is depressed or push rod 69 is raised. If rod 69 be raised, contact 71 is closed and a circuit is established through motor RM, magnet 56 and contact 71 to right side ofline, whereas if key 196 be depressed the circuit is established through contact 198 instead of contact 71. If zero button 32 is in latched position during the above reset cycle, the total is printed and the counter reset to zero in the usual manner. If
it is desired to print thetotal from any cou'nter and not reset itto zero theresult is accomplished by 'leaving'zero button 32 unlatched and closing by-pass switch 182. I 'Underthese conditions contact 180 will be open but a cir'- cuit will be provided through switch 182, therefore, the. total will be printed even though zero button 32 and contact'180 arefnot' act usual mechanical resettingo'f the counter, so the machine with the above setting, prints the total without clearing the'counter, and will print that total as often as either reset key 196 or rod 69 is actuated, thus permitting the operator to print a total at the bottom of one record sheet andat the top of the next sheet.
After the printin of totals is finished, the
machine is restarte by depressing key 172 sufliciently to close contact 150, or by pressing the usual start key 190. At this time arm 90 having been released from latch 138has returned to normal raised position and contacts 160 and 170 are closed, so the machine is ready to print the next sheet and, as before, stop at a predetermined point on the sheet.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have herein described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiments thereof, but I desire to have it understoodthat the apparatus disclosed is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out byother means. Also, while it is designed to use the various features and elements in the combiembodied in the others without interfering with the more general results outlined, and
the invention extends to such use.
What I claim is-- 1. In a tabulating machine, in combination, an automatic restart circuit, an automatic reset circuit, an intermittently operable paper feed device and means settable to open said restart and reset circuits after a predetermined number of operations of said paper feed device. c
2. In a tabulating machine, in combination, an automatic restart circuit, an automatic reset circuit, an intermittently operable paper feed device, means settable to open said restart and reset circuits after a predetermined number of operations of said paper feed device, and manually operable means to initiate restart or reset operations.
3. In a machine of the class described, in combination, an-accumulator, total printing mechanism, reset mechanism for sand accumulator, paper. feed devices, settable means to stop said machine after a predetermined number .of operations of paper feed devices, and means thereafter operable to'actuate said total printing and reset mechanisms.
4.- In a nfichine of the class described, in
"combination, an accumulator,'total printing mechanism, reset mechanism for said accu- -mulator, paper feed devices, settable means independent of the settable device for'actuating said member to stop the motor, said means automatically resetting said device to its zero position;
6. In combination, in a machine operated by an electric motor, normally closed contacts for controlling the motor operation, a device automatically actuatable' a predetermined amount from a zero position to efiect opening of said contacts, and means for latching the contacts in open position.
7. The invention as set forth in claim 6, and manual means for releasing the latching means.
8. in combination, in a machine operated by an electric motor, start contacts normally 7 open and adapted to be momentarily closed to start the motor, control contacts normally closed to stop the motor, a device automatically actuatable a predetermined amount from an index position to efiect opening of the normallyclosed contacts and thereby stop the motor, means Eor latching the latter contacts open position, and means for closing the normally open contacts to start the motor, said latter means simultaneously actuating said latching means in a direction to release the normally closed contacts.
9. In combination in a tahulating machine, an automatic restart circuit, and control contacts therein, an automatic reset circuit and control contacts therein, a'member having connections to each of said control contacts to operate them simultaneously, and means automatically actuatable from a zero position to a predetermined and settalole position for operating said member,
