SIGN OBS TO NATIONAL TUBE COMPANY, CORPORATION, OF NEW JERSEY APPARATUS FPR EXPANDING PIPE ENDS Application filed June 1, 1929. Serial No. 367,691.
This invention relates to apparatus for expanding the ends of pipe, and has for its object the provision of apparatus whereby the end of a pipe maybe expanded and an integral expansion loop or collar formed in one operation by a single set of dies.
In the drawings 'Figure 1 is a side elevation of a standard form of expanding machine having the novel die arrangement of this invention applied thereto. 1 7
Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5 are diagrammatic views illustrating the several steps of the ex panding operation as performed when using the dies shown inFigure 1.
Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9 are diagrammatic views illustrating the several steps of the expanding operation as performed when using the slightly modified form of dies shown in these figures. v
Figure 10 is an elevation of the entering slide of the combined gripping and forming Referring more particularly to the draw ings the numeral 2 designates the frame of the machine. A crank-shaft 3 is journalled at the one end of the frame and has a fly-wheel 4 thereon. A motor 5 is mounted'on a motor base 6 on top of the frame 2 and is connected by a belt 7 to the fly-wheeler. p
A cross-head 8 is slidably mounted in the frame 2 and connected to the crank-shaft 3 by a connecting rod 9 whereby said crosshead will be rediprocated as said shaft is rotated.
A pair of dies 10 which are divided vertically on a line parallel with the longitudinal axis of the pipe to be expanded are mounted in the frame 2 and movable toward and away from each other in the usual manner to permit the entering and Withdrawal of the uitable roller stands 12 are provided forward of the machine for supporting the pipe during the upsetting operations.
The dies 10 have their adjacent faces recessed from their forward ends inwardly at 14 an appreciable distance to form a combined recess which will closel fit the pipe to be upset and prevent longitu 'nal movement of the pipe during the upsetting operation while at the same time preventing the upsetting of this portion of the pipe. The dies 10 have their adjacent faces further recessed at15 and 16 to form combined recesses to receive the expanded portion of the pipe.
A plunger 17' is mounted on the cross-head 8 and is provided with an entering nose 18' and an expanding portion 19. The portion 19 terminates in a shoulder 20 adaptedto engage the end of the pipe being expanded.
A die-ring 21 is mounted on and carried by the plug or plunger 17 and the dies 10 are recessed at 22- to permit the ring 21 to enter along the pipe.
The ring 21 is cut away at its forward end to form recesses 23 and 24 to receive the expanded portion of the pipe and the recess 23 cooperates with the recesses 16 of the connecting rod 9 and cross-head 8 will be operated to force the plunger 17 into the end of the pipe. The dies 10 will confine the pipe against expansion Within the recesses 1 1, while the recesses'l5 and 16 in the dies 10 and the recesses23 and 24 in the die-ring 21 will permit the pipe to be expanded by the plunger 17. The plunger 17 will produce an internal wedging pressure on the pipe which will stretch or expand the pipe into the recesses in the dies. After the plunger 17 has entered the pipe an appreciable distance the shoulder 20 on'th'e plunger will engage the end of the pipe and apply pressure to the. end of the pipe while the previously expanded portions are restricted or supported against further expansion by the dies 10 and 21 and plunger 17. except for that unrestricted. portion within the area of the recessesf16 and 23which is free to expand or bulge outwardly into said recesses. Continued application of end pressure to the end of the pipe by the plunger 17 willforce the plunger farther into the, pipe and at the same time cause the expanded portion of the pipe beyond the recesses 15 to move. inwardly relative to the dies 10 and to expand or bulge into the recesses 16 and 23, and the movement of the plunger is continued until the die-ring 21 is contacted with the end wall of the recesses 22 in the dies 10 so as to close the portion of the pipe expanded into the recesses 16 and 23 and form an annular ring or collar on the upset end of the pipe.
In Eigures 6 to 9 a modified form of die is shown. In this modification the dies 10 arev provided with recesses 15 and 16?. The recesses 16 being intermediate the ends of the recesses 15 serve to form the annular ring or collar when the plunger 17 applies end. pressure to the previously expanded end of a the pipe. The die-ring 21 is omitted from this structure.
We claim: 4 a
1. A pipe-expanding apparatus comprising in combination a pairof dies adapted to be positioned around the pipe end to be ex-. panded, said dies being adapted to tightly engage the pipe beyond the portion to be expanded and to have recesses into which the pipe end is expanded, a plunger adapted to be moved into the pipe end to expand said pipe end, said dies being recessed at their outer end, a die-ring carried by said plunger and adapted to be moved into said recessed outer ends of said pair ofdies, said ring being provided with recesses adapted to cooperate with said recesses in said pair of dies to shape the expanded endiof said pipe, said plunger. being adapted to. be moved into the end of said pipe to expand said pipe end into some of said recesses insaid pair of dies and said. die-ring, and a shoulder on said plunger adapted to en age the expanded end'of said pipe after said plunger has moved into said pipe a predetermined distance so as to force a portion of said upset end to move relative to said pair of dies during the continued movement of said plunger into said pi e whereby a portion of said upset end will e forced to expand into the, other of said recesses in said pair of dies and said ring to form an annular ring-like collar on said pipe, and said die-rin being-adapted to contact with said collar during the continued move ment of said plunger and to thereby 'force the side walls toward each other.
2. A ipe-expanding apparatuscomprising in com ination a frame having a suitable horizontal guideway therein, a vertically divided die mounted in said frame and held against rotary movement and against movement in a direction parallel with the longi' tudinal axis of the machine and the pipe to be expanded, said die being adapted to tightly engage the pipe beyond the portion to be expended and to have recesses into which the pipe end is expanded, a cross-head slidably mounted in said horizontal guideway, -a plunger secured to the forward end of said cross-head and adapted'to be moved into the pipe end to expand said pipe end into some of said recesses, and a shoulder on said plunger adapted to engage the expanded end of said pipe after said plunger has moved into said pipe a predetermined distance so as to force a portion of said upset end to move relative to said dies-during the continued movement of said plunger into said pipe whereby a portion'of said upset end will beforced to expand into other of said recesses to form an annular ring-like collar on said pipe end, a crank-shaft journaled in said rame, a connecting rod connecting said crosshead and said crank-sha and a motor for operating said crank-shaft.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set ourhands. 4
