This invention relates to pressing machines and particularly to the type embodying a buck and cooperating head used for garment and laundry pressing work.

While these machines are designed to cause the head to move as far as conveniently possible from the buck when the press i-sopen there are limits to the separation possible and it isdesirable' to provide for occasional extreme separation',for example when the buck is to be used for steaming purposes and the head is functionless. To accomplish this result I-interpose in the supportingand guiding mechanism for the head an element which is shiftable when the press is open tocarry the head to the rear and out of cooperative relation with the buck so that it is completely out of the way. also provide'releasable means to retain this member in normal posi- 7 tion. 7

The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanyingdraws ings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of-a press embodying the invention, the press being shown in full lines in its closed position and in dotted lines in its abnormal open position; V Figure 2 is a section; on the line IIII of Figurel and drawn on an enlarged scale; and Figure 3 an elevation, partly in section, showing certain portions of the mechanism.

A portion of the frame of the press is represented at 6 and the table at 7. 8 represents the usual buck; 9 the usual press head; and 11 the lever on which the press head 9 is mounted. The lever 11 is pivoted at 12 in the shiftable support 13 which in turn is pivoted at 15 on a portion of the frame 6.

The member 13 is shownin full lines in its normal position in Figure 1 and may be latched in that position by a. bolt 16 which is urged in engaging direction by a spring 17 and which may be retracted by a finger-piece 18. When the bolt is retracted the member 13 may be swung on the pivot 15 to the dotted line position of Figure 1 in which the head 9 is moved far away from the buck 8.

As will be seen upon reference to Figures 1 and 3, the lower end of the member 13 is formed with a fiat face 13 designed to cooperate witha facet formed upon the frame 6. This arrangement forms astop for the parts and inasmuch as the member'13 and the head-carrying lever and the head are to the rear of the pivot 15 the parts will remain in thatposition. In other words, the parts are thrown to the rear of the vertical line passing through the pivot. While I have shown the invention applied to a press of the lever type it is obviously not limited in its applicability to this type of press but may be adapted, with minor modifications, to any press having a head and buck with some supporting and guiding means for the head; rWhile this supporting and guida head, movable into and out of pressing ent-Z gagement with the buck; a guiding and supporting means forthe head, said means having a normal and an abnormal position, in the latter of which the head is out of cooperative relation with the buck; means for locking said means are fixed normal position; and meanfs indepeifdient of the locking means for moving the head into"open -and closed positions.
