Description

HfWv. FOUTZ.
ELEvAToR AND CARRIER.
No.179,181. Patented Tunez-7,1876.
7i* Mw WITNESSE `UNITEE STATES PATENT OEETCE.
HENRY W. FOUTZ, OF BELLEFON'IE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELEVATORS AND CARRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l '79,181 dated June 27, 1876 application tiled May 31, 1876.l
To all 'whom it may concern y Be it known that I, HENRY WILLIAM FOUTZ, of Bellefonte, inthe county of Centre and State 0f Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Elevators and Carriers, ofI
which the following is a speciiication:
My invention consists, rst, in a beam which is recessed to permit a clutch to'open and release the pulley-block. My invention consists, secondly, in providing the beam With a stop and springlatch which adapts it in combination with a rod to arrest the movement ofthe carriage.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved elevator and carrier in its normal condition, and in dotted lines the latch raised by the head of the pulley-block. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical trans# verse section on the line 3 3.
A may represent a beam constructed with a stop, a. B is a carriage, Whose sides C C form journal-bearings for rollers or wheels D D, by which the carriage is supported on the beam. Depending from the beam is a block, E, to which is hinged a latch, F. '[he latch is connected near its forward end by a spring, G, to the beam. H H are cheeks, provided at their lower ends with projections L IL forming a clutch for grasping the pulley-block head. rlhe cheeks H H are ,supported by rods I I on which they swing transversely of the carriage when their upper ends are opposie the recesses b b of the beam. c c are recesses inthe carriage sides to rcceivc the ends when thrust out by the beam. The latch is adapted to engage with one of the rods I. J is a pulley-block, provided with awedge shaped head, j, and the usual pulley K and hook 7c. The carriage-floor has a hole, O, to permit the pulley-head j to pass into the carriage. The pulling rope or chain N is secured to the floor of the carriage, and after passing down and round the pulley it is received by a sheave, L, at the front of the carriage, and thence to suitable operating devices. An eye, M, at the rear of the carriage provides means for the attachment of a returning cord.
Operation Supposing the load to have been secured to the hook k the pulley-block J is raised, when theheadj coming in contact with the under side'of the latch F disengages the latter, which falls over its engaging-rod, and thus releases and starts the carriage. At the saine time the upper ends of the cheeks H H leave the recesses b b and enter recesses 0 0, being thrust into the latter by the sides of the beam coming in contact with the cheeks, and the projections h IL clutch the wedge-shaped headj ofthe pulley-block J, and the carriage runs on, the beam to the desired place Where the load is to be deposited. rlhe carriage is now drawn back by the cord at the rear end of the carriage until the roller D comes in contact with the stop ca of the beam, when the latch F falls behind its rod, which locks the carriage, the cheeks having closed into the recesses in the beam and released the pulleyblock, permitting it to descend to receive an other load.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The beam A, having recesses b lb, and cheeks H H having projections h h, in combination with the pulley-block J, having Wedgeshaped head j, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The beam A, provided With stop a and latch F, in combination with the carriage B, having' rod I, as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY W. FOUTZ. Witnesses:
