JOHN Q. EVERSON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENTIN MACHINES FOR ROLLING SHEET OR PLATE METALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,178, dated June 27, 1876; application filed May 29, 1876..
My invention relates to that class of ma-.
chinery used in rolling sheet or plate metals; and consists of a guard attachment, made to the sheet or plate train, the guard being operated in such a manner as to prevent the break- -ing of the spindles, housing, and finishingrolls.
In the usual method of rolling sheet or plate metals two sets of rolls are used. The first that are used are known as roughing or breaking down, the other rolls are finishing or chilled.
The roughing-down rolls are used to reduce the mass of metal when it comes from the heated furnace into a plate or slab of the required width, and also to diminish its thickness. After the metal is thus broken down it is taken to the chilled or finishing rolls, and is there rolled and finished to the gage required in the finished plate or sheet. This operation is accomplished by means of vertical holding-down screws, which work in steel nuts let down into the housings, and press on the top brasses of the top rolls, thus allowing the rolls to be tightened down to rough and finish to any gage desired.
For the purpose of greater facility and accuracy, the tightening-down screws are geared so as to move together by means of suitable devices.
It will readily be seen after the sheet or plate is passed through the chilled or finishing rolls, on the last pass required to finish it,
that the chilled rolls will be tightened down considerably more than they were when the metal was first passed through them, and that it will be necessary to unloosen the tighteningscrews before another sheet or plate can be passed through without breaking the rolls or housings, or doing other serious injury to the train.
In the rolling of sheet or plate metals, and especially in sheet and plate iron, many chilled rolls are broken by putting the sheet or plate, as it comes from the roughing into the finishing-rolls when the tightening apparatus of the chills is screwed down. If the rolls do not, the housingor something else must break before the sheet or plate can pass through.
The object of my invention is to prevent the rougher-down from putting a plate or sheet into the finishing-rolls when they are tightened down, and have not been released after having made the last pass on the preceding sheet or plate. This object I have fully at tained in practical experiments by the use of a guard, attached to the housing, and actuated from the movement of the tightening-down apparatus of the chill or finishing rolls, by means of devices hereinafter described.
I will now proceed to describe my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows a front elevation of a sheet or plate train, with the guard attachment, showing the tighteningdown apparatus of the finishing-rolls released, and the guard-arm drawn back to the housingofthe roughing-rolls. Fig. 2 is a vertical plan of same, showing the tightening-down apparatus of the finishingrolls screwed down, and the guardarm thrown forward, blockading the way between the roughing and finishing rolls.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.
The dotted line extending from the guardarm K to the housing of the roughing-rolls shows the the line of movement, and the position the guardarm K will take when the tightening-down apparatus is released. The dotted line 00 00, extending from the roughing to the finishing rolls, shows the path taken by the rougher-down when taking the sheet or plate from the roughing to the finishing rolls.
It will readily be seen, from the position of the guard-arm, as shown in Fig. 2, that the rougher-down cannot take a sheet or slab from the roughing to the finishing rolls without being forcibly reminded of the fact that the tightening-down apparatus of the finishingrolls has not been released after making the last pass on the preceding sheet or plate.
The arrow T shows the direction the tightening-down mechanism is moved to release the" rolls, and to draw the guard-arm K back to the position shown in Fig. 1, indicated by the arrow Q.
A A are the roughing-rolls; B B, the finishing or chilled rolls U C, the tightening-down screws of the finishing or chilled rolls; D D are horizontal hand-levers, attached to, and for the purpose of tightening down and releasing, the screws 0 C. e isan adjustable link or rod connecting the hand'levers D' D, so as to cause them to move in unison. F is a curved horizontal crank-arm, attached at one end to the tightening-down screw 0, and having a slot and adjustable bolt at the other end, for the purpose of regulating the throw or movement of the connecting rod or link G.
G is an adjustable link or rod, connecting the horizontal curved crank-arm F to the horzontal crank-arm H. Said crank-arm H is attached to the vertical shaft J. J is a vertical shaft, which works in, and is supportedby, the two brackets P 1?, set out from the housing of the finishing-rolls. K is a horizontal guard-arm, attached to the vertical shaft J.
For the purpose ofkeeping the guard-arm out of the way when not using it, I attach the spiral spring S, from shaft J, to the lower bracket 1?, on which said shaft works.
I do not wish to confine my invention to the use of the preceding devices for giving the required motion to the guard-arm K, as it is obvious the guard arm K may be thrown into thepositions-desired by many other deat its lower end, working into a sliding guardarm, furnished with teeth, and arranged so as tomove back between the housings of the finishing and roughing rolls when the tightening-screws are released, and forward when they are put down.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, isy The combination of a guard-arm with the tightening-down mechanism of sheet or plate trains, and intermediatemechanism for actuating the guard-arm from the tightening-down mechanism, substantially as andfor the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said JOHN Q. EVERSON, have hereunto set my hand.
