Description

Feb. l0, 193i. M. H. DAVIS ET AL BOMB Filed Feb. 5. 1928 nvnom Merle 'H Davs David L Wnndherrg Patented Feb. 10, 1931 UNITED 4STATES PATEN'I OFFICE MERLE H. DAVIS, OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY, AND DAVID L. WOODBERBY, BOTH 0F EDGEWOOD ARSENAL, MARYLAND BOMB Application led February 3, 1928. Serial No. 251,721.
(GRANTEDUNDER THE ACT 0F MARCH 3, 1883, AS AMENDED APRIL 30, 1928; 870 0. G. 757) The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes wlthout the lpayment to us of any royalty thereon.
The subjectof this invention is a bomb.
In bombing operations against personnel or unprotected positions it isv necessary that the explosions of the bomb occur in the alr to secure an eflicient dispersion ofthe shell fragments or the chemical, incendiary, or smoke contents of the bomb. To meet this requirement it has been customary to provide a rapid detonating device protruding from the nose of the bomb. While an air burst may thus be secured the bomb is practically on the ground and under the inuence of inertia.
According to this invention it is proposed to provide a bomb which is -permitted to first strike and penetrate the ground and then be driven rearwardly to a predetermined height above the ground before the burstingv charge is set oil'.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, our invention resides in the novel arrangement and combination of parts and 1n the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the inventlon 1s illustrated in the drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the bomb constructed in accordance with` the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional v1ew o f the forward end of the axial tube.
is of sutlicient capacity to insure propulsion lof the tail portion into the air.
.The tail portion is provided 'with a firing pm carrier 10, a delay element 11, a detonator .12 and a booster 13, the explosive elements bemg encased as a unit for insertion in an axial tube 14 and for retention therein by the carrier l0 when threaded to the tube. This tube is threaded as at 15 in the forward Wall of the tail portion and is fitted with a thimble 16 which enters a socket 17 in the rear end of the tail portion.
"The firing pin carrier 10 slidably mounts a firing pm 18 which is held in the safe position agalnst rearward movement by means of a pin 19 which is sheared when the expelling charge 9 1s set off. The firing pin is also held against forward displacement on impact by means of a heavy bolt 20.
.Upon impact with the ground, the bomb will penetrate until retarded after which the fuse 8 ignites the expelling charge 9 which breaks the connection 7, drives the firing pin 1 8 home,.and propels the tail portion into the air. The period of the delay in the delay element 11 will be controlled by the nature of the contents o f the bomb. For the most effective burst or under special circumstances an air burst of different height may be required depending upon the particular kind of gas in the bomb or whether the contents are incendiary or smoke producing material.
We claim:
1. A bomb comprising a tail portion, a nose portion frangibly connected thereto, an expeiling charge in the nose portion, a delay fuse in the nose portion, a tube secured to the forward end of the tail portion, and having a socket engagement with the rear end'thereof, explosive elements encased as a unit inserted in the tube, a ring'pin carrier secured to the tube and retaining the explosive elements, a firing pin slidably mounted in the carrier and available to the expelling charge and means for holding the firing pin against movement towards the expelling charge.
2. A bomb comprising a tail ortion, a nose portion frangibly connected tliereto, an expelling charge in the nose portion, a delay fuse inthe nose portion, an axial tube in the tail portion, explosive elements encased as a unit inserted in the tube, a ring pin carrier secured to the tube and retaining the explosive elements, a firing pin slidably mounted in the carrier and available to the expelling charge and means for holding the rng in against movement towards the expelhng charge.
3. A bomb comprising a tail portion, a nose portion frangibly connected thereto, an ex'- pelling charge in the nose portion, a delay fuse in the nose portion, a tube secured to the forward end of the tail portion, and having a, socket engagement with the rear end thereof and a firing mechanism, including an expelling-charge-actuated iring pin carried by the tube.
