EDMUND F. BONAVENTURE AND GEORGE DAMMERON, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR MAKING DENTAL TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 79.1 53, dated June 27, 1876 application filed September 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDMUND F. BONA- VENTURE and GEORGE DAMMERON, of Paris, France, at present residing in New York city, have invented a certain new and useful Machine to be used in the Manufacture of Dental Tools; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of our said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, in whioh Figure 1 is a front elevation of our invention Fig. 2, a top view of part of said invention, and a horizontal section through the head that carries the tool to be milled; Fig. 3, a modified application of the machine; Fig. 4, a section through a 1); Fig.5, a section through 0 cl; Fig. 6, a section through c f, and Fig. 7 a section through g h.
The object of this invention is to facilitate and cheapen the manufacture of dental tools; and it consists of an improved machine coinposcd, first, ofa bed plate or frame, shown in the drawing by A, made of suitable form to carry the operative parts of the machine. Sec-- end, of an adjustable head to carry the tool to be made or cut, (shown in the drawing by 15,) said head to swing around a center, a, upon the bolts b b, by which it is secured to the bed-plate in the desired position, the bolts passing through slots in the head, as shown by the drawing. By means of this adjustable head the face of the tool to be cut is brought into right relation with the cutter to give the groove the desired angle. Third, of an adjustable disk fitted upon the spindle O of said head, (shown in the drawing by 1),) said disk being indented with small holes, (shown by d d d,) and combined with a stop-catch, E, to match said holes and secure it in the desired position. The indentations in said disk are to be arranged or graduated with reference to the number of grooves to be cut in the tool, the holes in the disk to be arranged on concentric circles and numbered the same as in the case of a cog-cutting machine, the stopcatch to be fitted in a groove, F, that it may be moved to and from the center of the disk, the object of the disk being to determine the relative number and position of the grooves to be cut in the tool. Fourth, of an adjustable moving lever fitted to carry a spindle upon which the cutter and driving-pulley are arranged to mill the tool in process of construction.
The lever is shown by G, the spindle by c, the cutter by f, and the driving-pulley by g, set in an offset of the lever. lever is connected with the frame by means of a universal joint, or a joint that permits it to move vertically and horizontally at the same time,.(sl1own in the drawing by H, Figs. 1, 2; 3, and 4,) the joint being supported in a bracket, I, bolted to a lug, J, of the main frame. The other end of said lever is arranged to ride upon a guide or form, K, fitted in the frame at P, and secured by a set-screw, 0. The face of this guide or form, upon which the end of the lever rides, is made in shape to correspond with the face of the tool to be grooved, in the direction the grooves are to be'cut, that the lever carying the cutter may rise and fall to correspond with the face of the tool, be it large or small, regular or irregular, there being different forms of the guide to match the various forms of tools.
The lever should be fitted with a thin-edged wearing-iron, l, to ride on the guides and follow exactly its form.
The operation of the machine will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
We claim as our invention-- 1. In a machine adapted to the manufacture of dental tools, the lever G, or handle, fitted with the cutter, combined with the cam that guides it, and the spindle that carries the tool to be cut, arranged in relation to each other substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. The adjustable head B, in combination with said lever or beam, for the purpose of bringing the tool to be out under the cutter upon the angle it is desired to cut the groove.
3. The. adjustable disk D,-in combination with the spindle O and the lever G, for the purpose of bringing the tool to be cut in right relation to the cutter, and to regulate the number of grooves to be out in the tool.
EDMUND F. BONAVENTURE. GEORGE DAMMERON.
