PAPER m 01mm TO PREVENT Pars or Hoxxsunn, NOB-WAY EQE BREAKAGE OI THE PAPE- QN' THE GD'UGE PRESS OB WIRE CLQTH 4 Application filed-January 3, i930, Serial No. 418,326, and in Norway January 25, 1929;
On thecouch-part oft a paper machine it happens that the paper attaches to the wire "cloth at some point, so as to be carried with the .wire cloth towards the lower couch cyline der. In thistmanner the paper is'caused to 'be torn along one or more lines forming an acute angle between them or between the line and the edge ofthe paper,'and after a certain interval .the paper will be torn from an edge to edge so as to be completely broken.
. The present invention has for'its object to preventthe breakage or interruption of the continuous web of paper in these; cases, and this is obtained in accordance with the'inven 1% tion by providing means for dividing the continuous web of paper in two arallel stripsby means of a jet of water, sai means.
- being actuated automatically as soon as tear- .ing of the paper commences.
By dividing the continuous web of paper. in this manner, the extension of the fissure directly across the paper web is prevented, and by gradually moving the jet towards the edge which has been torn, the normal condif width of paper is re estab lished. A a v j V I The jet may preferably be locateglappro'x imately midway between the edges ofthe .paper. web, but obviously it may also be 39 placed near aone of the edges in case it is g proved that e pa er'has a. tendency to break in a cert in ace, for instance owing to a defect in the wlre' cloth or the like. 7 A I O Also, if'so desired, two or more jets maybe 5 provided, and said jets may be adapted to be v O "a couch cy mder, means for dlvldmg the paoperated simultaneously or selectively. I
i The automatic-actuation of the jet isob- P tained in accordance with the invention b condficting the part'ofthepapdr web, whie is torn oh by 'the wireicloth so as to be carried Y along with the -1same,' on .to'a plate or receptacle which is connected ina suitable manner 1 'with means actuating the jet as soon as the weight thereof isincreased owing to the paperaccumulated on the same.
said dividing means in casetearing of the vice after the actuation of the jet by means of the automatic device. 4
1 is the upper and 2 the lower couch cylinder. 3 is the wire cloth and 4 the felt on which the paper 5 is to be carried from the lower couch cylinder. In case a part of the paper web is carried along with the wire round the lower couch cylinder, it is removed from the wire cloth by means of auxiliary cylinder 6, so as to drop on to the hinged plate 7 This plate is connected for instance by means of a flexible 'wire or the like with a cook or valve 9 in the water pipe 10 leading to a jet 11 located over Q a the paper web on the wire cloth 3, at apoint approximately midway between the edges of the paper. When a certain amount of paper has-accumulated on plate'7, as indicated on Fig. 2, the plate tilts downwards, owing to n the increase ofweight, opening valve 9 so as to operate the jet, which will then divide the paper web in two parallel stri s.
The tearing of the paper w accordingly stop when reaching the division lines. Then r the jet is movedin some suitable manner toj'wards thesideof the division line on which the tearin of the paper has commenced, thus re-establis ing the paper web in full width. It will be understood that the actuation of the jet instead oftaking place by direct connection as indicated, may also take place by the intermission of asuitable relay, for instance of the electric type. Claim In a pa er making machine a wire cloth,
er web on the'wire cloth in two or more parallel strips and means actuated by the weight a of torn oii paper for automatically actuating paper web-should be started owing to part of the paper being carried along with the wire cloth about the couch cylinder. p A In testimon whereof, I aflix my signature;
LS ANDOR J ACOB SENJ One form of the invention is illustrated on I the drawing in a purely diagrammatic manner."-'--;
