Description

Feb. 3, 1931.
A. A. MALLINCKRoDr DIAL CLEANER Filed June 24, 1929 INVENToR. ARM/N A. MALL/M6007 my fm j ATTORNEYS.
Patented Feb. 3, 1931 .ARMIN A. MALLINCKRODT, OF EIEB512111133. GROVES, MISSOURI DIAL CLEANER Application nled June 24,
This invention appertains to a cleaning device for small articles, such as dials, watch faces and the like, and has for one of its primary objects the provision of a thin elongated form around which a cleaning cloth can be placed, with novel means for holding the cloth on the form, the device being provided with a suitable manipulating handle.
A further important object of my invention is the provision of a cleaning device for watch dials or the like embodying a thin flat member of sheet metal having the forward end thereof tapered to provide a form, the rear end forming a manipulating handle, the form being adapted to have wound thereabout a suitable cleaning cloth, the handle portion of the plate having associated therewith' means for gripping the cloth so as to hold the same against displacement, the gripping means and the handle having attached thereto a suitable ring for preventing loss of the parts and to permit the attaching of the device to a key ring, watch chain or the like.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved dial cleaner of the above character, which will be durable and efficient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
llVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which dra-wing:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved dial cleaner showing the cleaning vcloth wound about the same and ready for use;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the same;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the holding device forthe cleaning cloth, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the handle and form around which the cleaning cloth is adapted to be wound.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates 1929. Serial No. 373,384.
kmy improved dial cleaner, which comprises a thin sheet metal'plate or the like 10 having formed on one end thereof the flat handle 11 and on its forward end thereof the elongated finger-like form 12 around which is adapted to be wound the cleaning cloth 13.' The handle portion 11 of the plate is provided adjacent to its opposite ends with openings 14 and 15, for a purpose which willbe later described. e
Cooperating with the plate 10, I provide a jaw or holding device 16 for the cloth, which includes a handle or shank portion 17 of substantially the same shape as the handle portion 11 of the plate 10. This handle 17 has formedv thereon and proj ectingforwardly therefrom the upwardly inclined shank 18, the forward end of which is in turn provided with the depending toothed jaw 19. The portion 17 of the gripping device is provided adjacent to its opposite ends with openings 2O and 21 which are adapted to register with the openings 14 and 15 when the handle portion 17 is placed upon the handle portion 11.. In use of my improved device, the cleaning cloth 13 is wound around the form 12, after which the handle 17 is placed on the handle 11 with the j aw 19 ygripping the cleaning cloth and overlying the form 12. A suitable boltl or the like 22 is now passed through the registering' openings 2O and 14 for holding the jaw in gripping contact with the cleaning cloth.
The device is now ready for use and owing to the thin material from which the device is formed, the same can be readily used for cleaning small articles. The cloth can be readily removed from the form when soiled and replaced with a clean cloth.
In order to prevent separation of the hold-k -f ing device 16 and the plate 10, a ring 25 can be placed through the registering openings 21 and 15 and this ring will also form means for permitting the device to be connected with a key ring, watch chain or the like.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention, but:
What I claim as new is 1. A cleaning instrument comprising a flat metal plate having a handle at one end and an elongated tapered portion at the opposite end, a cleaning cloth detaehably Wound upon said portion, a gripping device for the cloth comprising a handle portion for abutting engagement With the handle portion of the plate, and a forwardly extending resilient jaw having depending teeth for engaging the Cloth, adjustable means adjustably conn-ecting the gripping device With the plate.
2. A Cleaning instrument comprising a flat metal plate having a handle at one end and an elongated tapered portion at the opposite.
end, a cleaning Cloth detaehably Wound upon said portion, a gripping device for the cloth Y comprising a flat handle portion for abutting engagement With the handle portion or" the plate,V and a forwardly extending resilient jaw having depending teeth for engaging the cloth,` and ineans connecting the dat handle portion of the gripping device with the handle of the plate.
In testimony whereof l alii); mv signature.
