WILLIAM S. BOOTH AND THOMAS H.
HALL, OF BATON BOUGE, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FAUCETS.
Specicat-ion-forming part of Letters Patent No.
April To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that we, WILLIAM S. BOOTH and THOMAS H. HALL, both ot' Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge county, in the State of Louisiana, have invented an Improved Faucet for Beer and Liquor Oasks, ofv which the following is a full, exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Our invention relates to a device for drawing beer or other liquid from kegs or casks, by which the keg or cask may be conveniently and properly tapped; and it consists in the parts combined and arranged to operate as hereinafter particularly set forth and described. i
Figures 1 and 2 show, respectively, the tap and bung parts of our device separated. Fig. 3 shows the same parts in section, and united, as arranged to draw liquor from the cask. Fig. 4t is a sectional view of the bung part as arranged to close the bung-opening of the cask, and Fig-5 is a face view of the same.
A is the bung portion of our device, which is formed, as shown in the drawings, with the hollow cylinder a adapted to be placed in the bung-hole of the cash, and to extend inward into the cask, being secured in the said hole by the thread al upon the exterior of the cylinder, as shown, and being provided with a ange, a2, which surrounds the said hole on the exterior of the Cask. This flange may be adapted to be turned by a Wrench, as shown in Fig. 5.
The inner end of the cylinder a-that is, the end which projects into the cash-has the lateral perforations a3, which are, preferably, made as shown, extending lengthwise of' the cylinder.
For convenience in manufacture the cylinder a may be constructed in two parts, one being the portion which screws into the bunghole, and the other the part having the per- These two parts may be riveted together, as shown, but may be, preferably, screwed together by a female thread on the perforated endv passed onto a male thread turned on the bung-'hole end.
Within the perforated-end ofthe cylinder c is arranged a plunger, a, provided with a coilspring, a5, and which plays through an opening in the inner end of the cylinder. This plunger -is provided at its head, where it abuts upon the shoulder a5, with the elastic or pack- 179,092, dated June 27, 1876; application iiled ing washer a?, and the head is formed with the male screw c", adapted and arranged to enter the passage through the bung-hole end, and engage the female thread e9 formed thereon.
B is the tap or faucet fortion of our device, which is formed with the customary stopcock part b, and has a flange, bl, provided with an elastic packing washer, b2, as shown. Extending back of this ange b1 is a pipepiece, b3, closed at its rear end, and there pr.)- vided with a key-post, b4, and having lateral perforations b5, and having a male screw formed upon it back of the ange b1 at LG, as shown, adapted to engage the thread a9 on the part A.
The operation of our device is obvious. It is intended that the part A shall be'permanently tixed in the cask, and the bung closed by screwing the plunger into the thread a9.
Then it is desired to tap the casli the faucet part B is introduced into the part A, the post b4. being fitted into a socket, am, in the face of the plunger, and the part B revolved, thus unscrewing the plunger-head from its seatiu the opening a9,- and the part B is then screwed into the part A by means of the thread 116 engaging the thread e9, the plunger bein gforced back in the perforated end ot' the cylinder a, and a clear passage opened through from the interior cask into the faucet.
Vhen it is desired to close the cask and withdraw the faucet part, the part B is unscrewed, the post bL turning the plunger-head into its seat in the opening a9, the spring a5 acting to keep the plunger-head against the said post.
What weclaim as our invention, and dcsire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a faucet device for drawing beer or liquor from casks, Ste., the bung part A, havingthe'hollow cylinder c, with lateral perforations at a3, and spring -plunger a4, with screw-head a8, adapted to abut on spindles a6, and enter female screw-opening'ag, and having socket am, together with the tap part B, having stop-cock b, iiange b1, pipe b3, carrying-post b4, and having perforations b5 and male screw-thread bf", all combined and arranged to operate as and for the purpose specified.
