Patented Jan. 27', 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DISPLAY AND ROAS'IIING MACHINE -Application filed December 21, 1928. Serial No. 827,714.
The present invention relates to display and roasting machines, and aims to provide a novel machine for roasting frankfurters or other edible articles and/or displaying such articles.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a machine of the kind indicated having novel means for supporting and mounting the frankfurters or other articles for planetary motion for purpose of display and also for movement around a heating unit.
With the foregoing and other objects in v.g
view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a rear view of the machine.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 are horizontal sections on the respective lines 3-3 and 44 of Fig. 2.
The machine is enclosed within a case havthe top portion of the base has a depression 17 into which grease dripping on the base will flow so as to discharge down the spout 18 into the recepetacle 10.
.An annular seriesof rods or hangers 19 are provided within the case, and have pins 20 on which frankfurters may be hung, as shown in Fig. 2. These hangers may be provided with hooks, shelves, or other devlces for supporting various articles to be displayed, when the machine is used fordisplay purposes.
The hangers 19 are suspendedfrom planet gears 21 which mesh with and travel around a sun gear. 22, and an annular gear 24 surrounds said gears 21 andhas internal gear teeth 23 meshing with them. The gears 22 and 24 have flanges 25 supporting the planet gears 21, andbrackets 27 are secured on the sun gear 22 and extend across and below the gear '24 and have rollers 28 supporting said car 24.
' A shield 27 is preferably disposed on the brackets 27 and surrounds the gears to conceal them, as seen in Fig. 1.
A vertical shaft 29 extends upwardl the base, and has its lower end operabi nected with the motor 9, and said shaft has a pinion 30 at its upper end meshing with the external teeth 30 of the gear 24, thereby rotating said gear, which in turn will rotate the planet gears 21 so that they have a planetary motion, rotating about their axes as well as the axes of the sun gear 22. The planetary motion of the hangers 19 is of advantage in eifectively displaying the articles supported by the hangers as well as moving said articles around the central heating unit.
l he heating unit, as shown, is electrical, but a gas or other suitable heating unit may be used.
The electrical heating unit comprises the vertical resistance coils 31 connected at their ends to binding posts 32 secured to upright reflectors 33, which are preferably concaved transversely, as seen in Fig. 4, so asto concentrate the heat rays on the frankfurters or other articles as they pass the coils 31.
The reflectors 33 are seated on a support 34, and a cap 35 is fitted over the upper ends of the reflectors and supports a tube 26 whichv inlturn supports the sun gear 22.
The support 34 is mounted on a tubular post 36 secured on the'base 7. An electric lamp for purpose of display is mounted on the top 15, which has a holder 37 for an ornamental shade 38 to enclose the lamp.

The wires 40 for the lamp and for the resistance coils 31 pass through the tubular posts 26 and 36 and between the reflectors 33, and the back of the base 7 has suitable switches 41 for controlling the circuits of the lamp, resistance coils or heater, and motor .9, so that the three circuits may be controlled independently.
The electric current supply cable 42 enters the base at the back, as seen in Fig. 1.
The door 14 may be readily slid open for placing the frank furters or other articles on the hangers and removing same therefrom, and when the motor 9 is operated the hangers are given a planetary motion around the heating unit, both for purpose of display and to roast the articles on all sides.
It will be noted that the upper surface of the base 7 is not encumbered, so that grease running or falling down from the frankfurters or other articles will not pass to any of the working parts and will run into the depression 17 and down through the spout 18 into the receptacle 10.
The machine is therefore sanitary, because it can be kept clean conveniently, and grease running down from the hangers will flow immediately down into the receptacle 10.
As hereinbefore indicated the machine may be used without the heating unit for displaying various articles, the hangers 19 having sultable means for supporting the articles for purposes of display.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A machine of the character described comprising a non-rotatable sun gear, an annular gear surrounding same, planet gears between and meshing with said sun and annular gears, brackets carried by the sun gear and extending over and supporting the annular gear for rotary movement, means for rotating the annular gear, and hangers suspended from said planet gears, said sun and annular gears having flanges on which said planet gears are seated and supported.
