This invention relates to new and useful lmprovements in typewriting machines generally, although more partlcularly to the type action thereof, and has for one of its objects to provide a repulser spring forassistin'g'th'e usual type bar return spring to qulckly retract the type bar from its lmpact with the platen and thereby permit the rapid movement of the escapement parts during that period of the time when it is most desired to insure quick carriage movements and the resultantevenly spaced type impressions.
A repulser spring is disclosed in my Pat ent 856,870, June 11, 1907, with the difierence however that in the present invention the spring anchor is attached to the type bar action forward of the type bar pivot and in reality directly connected to the heel of the type at the same point that the type'bar 2O link is connected, the length ofthe leverage when the type bar is at rest naturally being the distance between a line drawn through the type bar pivot and another line drawn or horizontally through the point ofconnection of the type bar link to'the type bar, thus permitting the spring, with other parts, to be attached to a position closer to the type bar pivot than thatdis closed in said patent; with the consequent advantage of there being less retarding movement to the type bar at the time the repulser spring initial action takes effect; thus doing away with the harsh result that is apparent in said patent, due to the long leverage of the spring and its long travel through the arc made by the spring being attached to a point a considerable distance beyond the connection of the type bar link where it is attached to the type bar. In the drawings, which show only that much of a typewriter as is necessary to a complete understanding of my invention, A indicates a segment, B a shiftframe for supporting a carriage having a platen C, D an escapement for the carriage and E a ribbon vibrator.
A type bar 5 is pivoted at6 to the segment A, and link 7 is pivoted at its rear end to the heel of the type bar as at 8 and at its front end to a front link 9. A vertical link 10 is plvoted at its upper end to the front link9 and at its lower end to a key lever 11. The escapement D, which is of the well known quick acting roller type, and the ribbon vi-, brator E are actuated through the universal bar 12, which is connected to the link 7 by a link 13, the link 13 being pivotally connected to an anchor 14 attached to the link 7' at a point in front of the pivot 6 of the type arm. A relatively strong main type bar return spring 15 is connected at its frontend to the anchor 1 and at its rear end to an adjustable rocking frame 16. The main type bar return spring 15 thus extends horizontally under the type bar pivot to a point in rear thereof.
Inasmuch as the-pivot 8, during movement of the type arm, travels substantially equal dlstanees on opposite sides of a vertical plane passing through the type bar pivot 6, the line of travel of said pivot 8 will be substantially horizontal, and consequently the anchorage end of the main typebar return spring 15 will have a substantially straight line movement or travel," The rearend of the main spring-15 will also move in a substantially straight line due to its pivotal connection with the rocking frame .16;
In order to assist the main type bar return spring to quickly retract the type bar from its impact with the'platen, I haveprovided arelatively weak repulser spring 17. Both springs 15 and 17 are of the coil type, and the repulser spring 17 is'considerably shorter than the main spr1ng15. The repulser spring 17 is disposed directly below the type bar pivot 6 and above the main spring 15; .The repulser spring is located in the Vertical plane containing the-mainfspring 1 5, and is disposed in a horizontalplane parallel with the plane containing said main spring. The front of the repulser spring 17 is pivotally connected as at if to the anchor 14:, and the rear end 0; the spring terminates in'a straight on d portion 19 which ext- ".ds through a horizontal opening 20 for .ied in an impact plate 21 supported on the segment A. The plate 21 is provided along its upper edge with a forwardly extending attaching flange 22 which bears against the lower face or". the segment A. This flange 22 is connected to the segment by a screw and slot connection indicated generally at which permits the plate to be adjusted in a direction fore and aft of the machine. The rear end portion 19 of the repulser spring i provided with a stop 24: which in this instance is formed by bending the spring wire into a loop.
In the normal position of the parts the type bar is at rest shown in Figure 1, and the stop 24 of the repulser spring located in rear of and in spaced relation to the impac plate 21. When the type bar is swung upwardly, the link 7 is moved for" ardly and the main spring 15 is placed uncer increasing tension during the entire time the type bar is mov ing from its initial position of rest to its operating position at the printing point. However tension is not placed on the repulser spring 17 until the type bar is nearing its operative or printing position, because ot the loose connection between the stop 2% of the spring and the impact plate 21. W hen the type bar reaches the position shown in F 1gure 2, the stop 24 engages the impact plate 21 whereby during the last portion or" the upward movement of the type bar the repulser spring 17 will be placed under ten ion. Consequently, the repulser spring assists the main spring to quickly retract the type bar from its impact with the platen and thereby permlt the rapid movement of the escapement during that period of time w ien it is most desired to isure quick carriage movements and resultant evenly spaced type impressions.
I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a pivoted type bar, a key lever, a link connecting the type bar and key lever, and a main return spring for the type bar, of a repulser spring for assisting the return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected to the link adjacent the pivot of the type bar.
2. In a typewriting ma 'hine, the combination with a pivoted type bar, a key lever, a link connecting the type bar and key lever, and a main return spring for the type bar, of a repulser spring for assisting the return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected to the link adjacent the pivot of the type bar and arranged in close and substanti ally parallel relation.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a pivoted type bar, a key lever, a link connecting the type bar and key lever, and a main return spring for the type bar, of a repulser spring for assisting the return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected to the link adjacent the pivot of the type bar and arranged one above the other in a vertical plane.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a piv ted type bar, a key lever, a link connecting the type bar and key lever, and a main return spring for the type bar, of a repulser spring for assisting the return spring the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected to the link adacent the pivot of the type bar and arranged in different horizontal planes.
5. in. a typewriting machine, the combination with a pivoted type bar, a key lover, a link con 'ecting the type bar and key lever, and a main return spring for the type bar, of a repulser spring for assisting the return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected to the link at a point in front of the pivot of the type bar.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a pivoted type bar, a key lever, a link connecting the type bar and key lever, and a main return spring for the type bar, of a repulser spring for assisting the return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected to the link at a point in front of the pivot of the type bar, both of said springs being disposed below the type bar pivot and extending rearwardly thereof.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a pivoted type bar, a key lever, a link connecting the type bar and key lever, and a main return spring for the type bar, of a repulser spring for assisting the return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected to the link adjacent the pivot of the type bar, the repulser spring being located between the pivot of the type bar and the return spring.
8. In a. typewriting machine, the combination with a pivoted type bar, a key lever, a link connecting the type bar and key lever, and a main return spring for the type bar, of a repulser spring for assisting the return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected to the link at a point in front of the pivot of the type bar, both of said springs being disposed below the type bar pivot and extending rearwardly thereof, the repulser spring bein located between the pivot of the type bar and the return spring.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a pivoted type bar, a key lever, a link connecting the type bar and key lever, and a main return spring for the type bar, of a repulser spring for assisting the return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected to the link at a point in front of the pivot of the type bar, both of said springs being disposed below the type bar pivot and extending rearwardly thereof, the repulser spring being located between the pivot of the type bar and the return spring and arranged in the vertical plane containing the return spring.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a pivoted type bar, a key lever, a link connecting the type bar and key lever, and a main return spring for the type bar, of a repulser spring for assisting the return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected to the link adjacent the pivot of the type bar, said repulser spring having a limited free movement at its opposite end.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a pivoted type bar, a key lever, a link connecting the type bar and key lever, and a main return spring for the type bar, of a repulser spring for assisting the return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected to the link at a point in front of the pivot of the type bar, both of said springs being disposed below the type bar pivot and extending rearwardly thereof, said repulser spring having a limited free movement at its opposite end.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combi,-, nation with a pivoted type bar, a key lever, a front link operatively connected with the key lever, a connecting link between the front link and the type bar, and a main return spring for the type bar, of a repulser spring for assisting the main return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected to 'the connecting link in front of the type bar pivot.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a pivoted type bar, a key lever, a front link operatively connected with the key lever, a connecting link between the front link and the type bar, and a main return spring for the type bar, of an impact plate disposed in rear of the type bar pivot, a repulser spring for assisting the main return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected at one end to the connecting link in front of the type bar pivot, the repulser spring having a limited free movement at its other end with the impact plate.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a segment, a type bar pivoted thereto, a key lever, a front link operatively connected with the key lever, a connecting link between the front link and the type bar, and a main return spring for the type bar, of an impact plate supported by the segment and disposed in rear of the type bar pivot, a repulser spring for assisting the return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected at one end to the connecting link infront of the type bar pivot, the repulser spring having a limited free movement at its other end with the impact plate.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a pivoted type bar, a key lever, a front link operatively connected with the key lever, a connecting link between the front link and the type bar, and a main return spring for the type bar, of an impact plate disposed in rear of the type bar pivot, means for supporting the impact plate for adjustments towards and from the type bar pivot, a repulser spring for assisting the main return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected at one end to the connecting link in front of the'typebar pivot, the repulser spring having a limited free movement at its other end with the impact plate.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a pivoted type bar, a key lever, a front link operatively connected with the key lever, a connecting link between the front link and the type bar, and a main return spring for the type bar, of a repulser spring for assisting the main return spring in the initial return movement of the bar, both of said springs being operatively connected to the connecting link in front of the type bar pivot, the repulser spring being located between the type bar pivot and the main return spring.
