My invention relates to a garmentdisplay mechanism, with particular reference to a type of construction comprising a board upon the front face of which a shirt or sim- 8 ilar garment can be displayed, while the rear face of the board is provided with means for gripping and retaining portions of the garment after it is folded around'the edges of tllGI bOELICl from the front to the rear face, and the object is to provide a practicable and efficient structure of this character which can v be economically manufactured.

ily a A further purpose of the invention is to afford a device ofv light weight, that is strong, durable, and can be quickly and easily manipulated to clamp a shirt or other garment thereon in proper position for most effective display, thus effecting a great saving of time over present methods of pinning shirtson card board forms and also saving the garment by avoiding inserting pins there through, which makes it unsalable as first class merchandise.

Another purpose is to afford a means requiring little dexterity or experience for securin a garment quickly, and which is readdaptable to shirts, pajamas and other garments of different sizes.

An additional purpose of the invention is to afforda structure having few parts, and which can be formed and assembled at a low cost.

Still a further purpose of the invention is the provision of a mechanism that is compact, neat, attractive in appearance, and which can be packed in a comparatively small space. a

To these and other ends the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts that will appear from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the novel features being pointed out inthe claims following the description.

V

The plate 1 is provided with stationary clamping flanges 2 which are preferably in tegral and formed by striking them from the body of the plate. The flanges 2 extend from the rear face of the plate at approximately the angles illustrated in Figures 3 to 5. The side portions of the garment when held on the plate are clamped against said flanges 2 by oppositely arranged clamping bails 3 which are pivotally mounted on the rear face of the plate 1 and act to hold the side portions of the garment against the o5 flanges 2. I

To accomplish this, the plate 1 has'struck therefrom the ears or supports 4, each of which is provided with cam slots 5 that receive the ends 6 of the clamping bails 3, per itil before such mitting the latter to swing upwardly as shown in Figure 1 to permit the proper positioning of the garment over the flanges 2. After the garment is thus positioned, the outer parts of the bails are dropped downwardly over the flanges 2 to the position shown in Figure 5, and then the ends of the bails 6 are pushed downwardly to the position shown in Figure 3. During this move ment of the bails, the cam surfaces of the slots 5 cause an in yard bodily movement of the bails toward the flanges 2, from the position shown in Figure 5 to that shown in Figure 3, thus clamping the flanges 2.

The ends of the bails are held in clamping position by the curved portions 7 of the cam slots, the garment being released when desired by elevating the inner parts or ends 6 of the bails. The structure thus far described constitutes the mechanism for clamping the side portions of the shirt or garment, following which the lower end or tail portion of the garment is folded around the lower end of the board and brought upwardly to a position over thecentral portions of the bails and flanges, and it is necessary to provide means for clamping such tail portion in proper positlon.

To effect this, a spring member or clamping strap 10 is pivotally supported at 11 on one of the bails 3, as shown in Figures 1 and 4, such strap being preferably bowed upwardly when released or in unlocked osition. The clamping strap lOincludes a loop portion 12 and a releasing portion in the form of a finger piece 13. After the tail portion of the garment is in place, the strap 10 is garment against the brou 'ht downwardl as shown in Fi ure 6 b i D until the loop portion 12 is in contact with the adjacent bail, and then by pressing upon the top of the loop portion 12, it is forced over the bail as shown in Figure 7 and acts to hold the strap in locked engagement with the bail and thus retain the tail portion of the garment. To release the strap 10, the finger piece 13 is pressed upwardly, causing the loop 12 to become disengaged from the bail and the strap then assumes the position shown in Figure 5, releasing the garment.

The yoke or shoulder portions of the garment are held by suitable clamping means such as spring clips 15 mounted at the top on the rear face of the board to engage such shoulder portions when they are folded over the upper edge of the board. For garments of different sizes or widths, it is desirable to clamp between differentpoints laterally of the board and to accommodate such needs, the clips 15 are preferably mounted between cars 16 formed on plates 17 which are slidable laterally of the board. The plate 1 is slotted 18 and each plate 17 carries a pin or rivet 19 extending through the slot 18, while 20 is a head on the pin 19 engaging the front face f the plate 1 and holding the plate'17 frictionally against the rear face of the plate 1 at any desired position of adjustment within the limits of the slot 18.

Manufactured shirts are usually folded in such a manner that the cuffs project from the sides, and it is desirable to retain such cuffs against the rear face of the board to prevent t eir being visible from the front. This is accomplished conveniently and satisfactorily by retaining members preferably in the form of spring clips 21 that are pivotally mounted on ears 22 carried by the bails 3, as shown in Figure 1; The clips 21 normally occupy the position shown in full lines in Figures 1 and 2, but can be swung upwardly to the position shown in dotted lines where the cuffs are at the upper parts of the shirts, or when it becomes desirable to clamp them at the upper parts of the board.

The structure shown is susceptible of various modifications and changes without departing from the essential features of the improvement, and this application is intended to cover any such departures as come within the intent of the invention or the scope of the following claims. 5

I claim:

1. A arment display mechanism comprising a board, a stationary clamping flange thereon, a pivoted clamping member cooperating with flange, and means actuating the pivoted clamping member bodily toward said clamping flange to retain a portion of a garment therebetween.

2. A garment display mechanism comprising a board, a stationary clamping flange thereon, a movable bail'cooperating with said stationaryfiange, and meanspivotally supporting the ends of said bail and permitting bodily movement of said ends toward and from the flange to effect a clamping action of the bail against the flange.

A garment display mechanism comprising a board, a stationary clamping flange thereon, a movablebail cooperating with said flanga'and supports in which the ends of he bail are pivotally mounted, said supports including cam slots permitting vertical move ment of the ends of the bail and causing the bail to move toward said flange when the ends of the bail are in one position and to be released from the. flange when the ends of the-bail are in a second position.

4:. A garment display mechanism comprising a sheet metal plate aaapted'to hold a garment on its front face and having integral clamping flanges extending away from its rear face, clamping bails pivotally mounted on the rear face of the plate and cooperating with said flanges, and means for pivot-aly supporting said bails comprising ears formed integral with the plate and extending away from the rear face thereof.

5. A garment display mechanism comprising a sheet metal plate adapted to hold a, garment on its front face and having integral clamping flanges extending from the rear face thereof, oppositely arranged clamping bails pivotally mounted on the rear face of the plate and cooperating with said flanges,'and supporting ears formed integral with the plate, said supporting ears having cam slots within which the ends of the bails are pivotally arranged and permitting bodily vertical movement of said ends of the bails, causing the latter to clamp a garment against the flanges.

6. A garment display mechanism comprising a board adapted to hold a garment on the front face thereof, stationary clamping flanges on the rear face of the board, a pair of clamping bails pivotally mounted on the rear face of the board and cooperating with said flanges, and cuff retainers pivotally car ried by said bails. V

7 A garment display mechanism comprising a board having stationary clamping flanges, pivotally mounted bails cooperating with said flanges, spring clips for holding the upper part of the garment against the board, and supports for said clips slidably mounted for transverse adjustment on the board. 7

8. A garment display mechanism comprising a board, a pair of bails pivotally mounted thereon, and a clamping member pivoted on one of said bails and having means for frictionally engaging the other of the bails.

9. A garment display mechanism comprising a board, a pair of bails pivoted thereon,

and a clamping member pivoted on one of the bails and having a locking portion acting to hold the clamp in engagement with the other bail.

10. A garment display mechanism comprising a board, a pair of bails pivoted thereon, and a spring clamping strap pivoted on one of the bails and having a loop portion acting to hold the clamp in engagement with the other bail.

11. A garment display mechanism comprising a board adapted to hold a garment on the front face thereof, means on the rear face for clamping the lower portions of a garment, clamping devices for the upper portions of the garment, and laterally adjustable supports for the last mentioned clamping devices;

12. A garment display mechanism comprising a board, a pair of bails pivoted thereon, a spring clamping strap pivoted on one of the bails and having a loop portion acting to hold the clamp in engagement with the other bail, spring clips for holding the upper portion of the garment, and laterally slidable supporting plates for said clips.

13. A garment display mechanism comprising a board, a clamping flange projecting therefrom, a clamping member pivoted to the board and arranged to swing into contact With the board adjacent the clampin flange, andmeans operating to move the c amping member, bodily ,into clamping engagement 7
