Patented Jan. 20, 1931 UNITED s'raras ROBERT L. SAVAGE, F CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA POULTRY-SHIPPING BOX Application filed A ril 11,
This invention relates to improvements in containers adapted for shipping live stock, such as small animals, birds or chickens, the
, invention being especially adapted for shipping baby chicks.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a container for the above purpose which is provided with means to prevent closecoutact between the containers, or be-,
tween containers and other objects or articles when the containers are being shipped,
to secure the lid or top of the container in,
place.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a container which in addition to the above and other advantageous features, is simple, durable, economical and'light in construction, and is constructed so that the spacing ribs or bars may be supplied sep-' arately inflattened condition to facilitate himgling, and subsequently shipped .and apie p With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, "to be hereinafter more fully described, il-
lustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container constructed in accordance with the in- -'vention. Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view with the spacing ribs omitted.
Figure 3 is an elevation looking at one omitted. Y Figure 4- is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on the line H of Figure 1. Figure 5 is a like view'on the'line 55 end of the containerwith the spacing rib- 1929. Serial No. 355,941.
Figure 6 is a plan view of the blank from which one of the spacing ribs is formed.
Figure 7 is a like view of the blankfor forming another of the spacing ribs.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a box or container having a lid 11.. The box and lid may be made of any suitable material, being preferably made of some light relatively stiff material such as spacedsheets of cardboard between which is placed sheets of corrugated cardboard for reinforcement. The material described is in, commercial use and while it is especially suitable for the purpose of the present invention, it is obvious that other suitable materials maybe substituted.
As the container is especially designed for poultry, birds and small animals, it is provided with ventilating openings 12.
These openings are shown as being provided in both the box and lid and the latter is removably mounted upon the former.
The lid is provided with s-pacing'bars or ribs 13 which may be constructed. of the same material as the box. One of the ribs 13 is shown in Figure 7 of the drawings in flattened condition and comprises an elongated body which is bent longitudinally along the dot' and dash line. indicatedat 14. Extending from opposite side edges of the rib are tongues 15 having shoulders 16. These tongues are adapted for-insertion through openings 17 provided in the lid 11 when the bars are bent along the dotted lines. Thus, another container or article may be placed .upon the one shown in the drawings without cutting off the passageof air through the openings 12. If desired, the spacing bars 13 may extend beyond the side edges of the box as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings by dotted lines, or, the bar may extend across the bottom of the boxinstead of the top, or it. may extend across both the bottom and top transversely. h ed after the manner of the 1m bars 13 and like these bars are formed of a fiat body having tongues 19 extending from opposite edges and shoulders 20 provided upon the tongues. The body is folded longitudinally along the dotted line 21 shown. in Figure 6 of the drawings and the tongues are inserted through openings 22 and 23 provided respectively in the box and lid. The box is. provided with ventilating openings 24 which the ribs 18 protect after the manner of the ribs 13. However, theribs 18 perform another important function in' that they provide means for holding the lid in place.
The box and lid may be shipped in knocked down condition and folded with its flanges overlapped as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, a staple 25 being inserted in these flanges with its ends bent toretain the staple in place.
While the ribs are shown as extending transversely of the top and sides of the box,
it is of course obvious that they may be differently positioned and still serve the function intended. For example, they may be arranged obliquely instead of transversely and may be placed at the ends or bottom of the box. I
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A container comprising a body and a top both having openings therein, spacing bars extending along the outside of the top,
spacing bars upon the outside of the container connecting the body and top, and tongues extending from the bars through 'certain of 40 the openings to hold the bars in place and retain the top upon the body.
2. A container comprising a body and a top both having openings therein, spacing bars extending along the outside of the top, transversely V-shaped spacing bars upon the outside of the container connectin the body and top, and tongues extending rom the bars through certain of the openings to hold the bars in place and retain the top upon the body. i
In testimony whereof I aflix my signatureo ROBERT L. SAVAGE.
