IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-LIGHTING DEVICES.

Be it known that I, RUFUS S. KING, yof Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented, made, and applied to use, Improve- .the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure lis a front view of a burner to which my invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the lighting device detached from the burner. Fig. 4 is a top view of the same. f

In the drawing, like parts of the invention are pointed out by the same letters of reference.

The nature of the present invention consists in the construction, as morefully hereinafter set forth, of a lamp-lighting device, applicable more particularly to the class of lamps in which-kerosene-oil is consumed; the object ofthe invention being the construction of a lamp-lighting device for use more particularly in connection with lamps in which keroseneoil is consumed, by which the Wick may be lighted without the necessity of removing the chimney of the lamp.

To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe the construction andoperation of the same.

A shows the burner of alamp in which kerosene-oil is consumed, and B is the'wicktube of the same, in which is inserted the wick O. 'lhe attachment consists of a tube, D, the lower end of which is let into the lower portion ofthe burner, and is soldered or attached to the same in any convenient way, and the tube is made of sufficient length to extend, when placed in position, verynearly to the top of the wick-tube B. The tube D is slotted for a portionof its length a, and within this slotted portion is received a portion of a plate, E, of spring metal, attached at its lower end by a screw, c, to the exterior of the tube D.

The upper portion of this plate of metal E is partially curved, and forms, as it were, a knifeblade, the object of which will be hereinafter explained. The tube, when placed in position, is placed at an angle to the wick-tube, 'as shown in Figs. l and 2. l

Such being the construction, the operation vis as follows: The attachment having been attached to a burner, as' shown, to light the' wick, a match is inserted in the tube D from the under side of the burner A, the head of the match being inserted first, and the match is then shoved up and through the tube D, the spring metal E accommodating itself to matches differing in diameter. As the head of the match is passed through the tube it is brought into contact with the curved portion f of the plate E, and the phosphorus or iguiting material is cut or severed by the curved portion j' of the plate E, by which the saine is ignited, and the upward movement of the match continuing, the flame from the match is communicated to the wick, lighting the same. The wick having been, lighted, the unconsumed portion of the match may be withdrawn' from the tube D. The attachment thus constructed adjusts itself readily to matches differing in diameter, and is reliable in its operation.

I am aware that a lamp-lighting device in which a tube having a roughened interior surface is employed has been used, and I lay no claim to such device; for in such a device but 011e size of match can be used, and the mode of igniting the match differs from the mode availed of in my invention.

Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new is- .Ihe combination of the slotted tube D, provided with the spring-blade E, and the burner A, substantially as and for the purpose described.
