This invention relates to improvements in hand brakes. Y ln the operation of geared mechanisms of certain types, excessivefrictionis developed between the gear teeth because of the difticulty in accuratelyplacing the axes ofrotation of the gears,resulting 'in failure to provide eflicient meshing engagement of the gear teeth at the pitch diameters thereof, and'particularly is'this true in hand vbrake mechanisms for railway cars whereinthe gears are seldom mounted in an accurate manner, and, even if so mounted, quickly lose accurate enhand brake mechanism including meshing gears which are automatically maintained in proper meshing relation, and which do not depend for efficient operation upon the accurate placing of the spindles rotate. means for said drum; one of saidrotatable members andthe cooperating bearing members being in driving engagement; manually operated means for rotating said last named rotatable vmember to effect Winding movement ofthe drum; and a brake tightenlng element connected to the drum and suspended `therefrom, said tightening4 element being connected to the brake'mechanism proper of the car.
