Description

COMPANY, OF LINDEN, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE INCREASING THE VISCOSITY AND IMPROVING THE LUBRICATING PROPERTIES OF OILS No Drawing. Application filed June 13, 1928, Serial No. 285,205, and in Germany Ju ne 25, 1927.
This invention relates to an improved process for increasing the viscosity and improving materlal to be considered in a tube, which is the lubricating properties of oils.
We have found that Montan wax, which has been bleached by oxidation, with chromic acid or the salts thereof, if desired, together with organic acids or sulphuric acid, for example, as described and claimed in Patent Nos. 1,690,876 and 1,699,250, is excellently adapted for considerably increasing the viscosity of oils especially tar oils, mineral oils and the like, or mixtures of the same, and for improving their lubricating properties to a large extent. An addition, for example, of even about 1 per cent or less of the wax so bleached is suflicient to lower the coefficient of friction of solid bodies by about '30 per cent of that obtained when unmixed oils are employed. By an addition of about 4 per cent and upwards, the viscosity of the said oils, and also of nearly all vegetable and fish oils, such as castor oil, rape oil,'olive oil,
sesame oil, cod-liver oil and the like, is increased to such an extent that products resembling and having the consistency of petroleum jelly and ointment are obtained, which are highly suitable for use in therapy and in cosmetics.
The property of rendering oils conslderably more viscous by a very small addition of Montan wax bleached b oxidation as before .mentioned, and of furnlshing products similar to petroleum jelly and ointment by larger additions of the said agent is not displayed to the same extent either by crude Montan- Montan wax bleached in any other way,
wax, ceresineor carnauba wax.
According to the present invention, for example, an addition of one quarter per cent of bleached Montan wax raises the viscosity of a lubricating oil from 14,2 Engle-r degrees at-20 C. to 25.2 Engler degrees at 20 0., whereas, in the case of carnauba wax, an addition of 2 per cent, or eight times as much,
is needed to produce the same effect. An addition of 7 per cent of Montan wax bleached as aforesaid to the same oil effects the formation of a mass of the consistency of ointment, with the dropping point 63 C. whereas the same amount of crude Montan wax only raises the viscosity to 34.1 at 20 C. The dropping point is determined by heating the open at the bottom, The dropping point is the temperature, at which the first drop falls off from the bottom of the said tube.
The following examples will further illustrate the nature of the said invention which however is not limited thereto.
Example 1 Emample 2 100 parts of paratfin oil are heated to 100 C. and mixed, by stirring, with 7 parts of Montan wax bleached by oxidation with chromic acid. The resulting paste-is triturated whencold, and forms a white product, similar to petroleum jelly and with the dropping point 68.5 C. v

What we claim is 1. A process for increasing the viscosity and improving the lubricating properties of oils, which comprises providing these with an addition of Montan wax bleached by oxidation with chromic acid.
2. A process for increasing the viscosity and improving the lubricating properties of oils, which comprises providing these with an addition of Montan wax bleached by treatment with chromic acid in the presence of an acid selected from the group consisting of the organic acids and sulphuric acid.
3. As compositons of matter, improved viscous oils comprising an oil and Montan wax bleached by treatment with chromic acid. 4. As compositions of matter, roducts having the consistency of petroleum elly and ointment comprising an. oil and at least about 4 per cent of Montan wax bleached by oxidation with chromic acid.
5. As compositions of matter,productshaving the consistency of petroleum jelly and ointment com rising an oil and at least about 4 per cent of lontan wax bleached by treatment with chromic acid.
6. As a composition ofmatter an improved lubricating oil comprising a lubricating oil and an addition of A to percent of Montan wax bleached by oxidation with chromic acid.
7. As a composition of matter an improved viscous oil comprising an oil and'Montan wax bleached by oxidation with chromic acid in the presence of acids selected from the class consisting of organic acids and sulphuric acid.
