Description

Patented Jan. 6, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT. omer-:p y,
CORPORATION, F DALLAS, TEXAS, A CORPORATION 0F DELAWARE l TONGS i' 'Apinication med september 13,' 1929.` serial Norsezioi,
This [invention relates to a :casing tongs, and particularly to a'tool of the lwrench type adapted for `'use upon' the tubing, rods and couplings for oil well work. More specifi- 35 cally the invention refers to the construction of tongs in which the-'work is surrounded by jaw members'connected togetherand further connected at each endwith an operating lever orliandle.Y V`
' In tools of such character it is important to provide a strong rigid wpivot as the lever is very heavy and exerts ymuch pressure when appliedv to the j aws. Further the structure of the part-sis suclrthat it isdiflicult to -remove and replace the usual pivot when desired, and also to change ,the position thereof to increase or diminish the diniensional'capacity of the Jaws. v To obviate objectionsto previous constructions and provide a novel vandimproved device, I disposethe pivot between the lever and jaw in an elongated slot at one end of which it is held against rotation while the remainder of the slot isfilled by a bushing block fitting the same.`
A further ,obj ect ofthe invention is to provide anew structure of 'bearing pin having' a rib at one side spaced from andintermediate its end, said rib being adapted to seat ina channell at' one end'of a slot in one jaw, and a bushing fitting said pin and having a rib n seated ina channel at the opposite end ofthe slot. n Another objectV ofthe invention is to 'p1-w r vide an improved casing tongs including a lever member, a jaw pivoted thereon, a latch jaw pivoted to the first jaw, a pressure jaw provided with a slot therein,V a pin on the connecting the vlatch and pressure `iaws.
handle engaging said opening, and a latchI l .Figure isa section'on line 3 3 yof F ig. 2 with the pivot in one pos1tion;
Figure 4 5 is a similar view with the pivot shifted; n n
Figure 5 is adetail perspective of the pivot and bushing; and f l Figure 6 ris a plan of the assembled tool. Like numerals of reference indicate vlike parts in the several figures of the drawing.
The tongs may be formed of any jdesired size or material and the configuration thereof varied at Will. The numeral 10 designated the pivoting aw provided l with a lip 11 adapted to enter the bifurcated end 12 of' the handleor lever 13 which is suspended in the usual manner as indicatedat lll.
A latch jaw 15 is pivoted at 16 to the jaw 10 and carries at its opposite yend a latch 17 pivoted thereon at 18-to engagera lip 19 at the outer face vof they pressure jaw 2O..y This latter'j aw is formed at its inner end with any arcuate slotv21 adapted to receive a pressure pin 22 carried by the end 12 of the handle and offsetfrom the pivot .thereof to effect a leverage. c i
The pivoting slot 23-in the lip 11 is elonf gated or oval in shape `and formed at each end with an angular key-way 24,.each of which ways'tting a radialangular rib Y25 carried at onevside of the aXis ofthe pivot pin 26, intermediate pintles 27 which fit circular bearings 28 in the end 12 of the lever. To permit the removal of the pivot by tapping it up or down'the bearing 28 has recesses 29 to; permit the passage ftherethroughv ofthe rib on the pin, and 'such recesses'will alignA with the key-ways 24. U
The pivot is held at one end of the slot 23 by .a kbushing or block 30 having a key-3l adapted toseat in one of the yways 24e and firmly retain the pivot at the opposite end4k of the slot. Vhen it is 4desired to adjustthe area of the jaws ,for different' sizes of pipe or object to be grasped,` the pivot is' withdrawn and reversed in position atthej end of .the slot opposite to thatpr'eviously occupied and-thebushing likewise reversed to fill the .remainder of the slot.` The l-ip 11 vis Valso formed with anapertjure 32 which alines .with
an aperture 33 in `thehandle lever when the travelling in the slot or" the gripping jaw.
firmly secnresthe tonguesto the object. For
the pnrposeofprovidinga readily ren'aovjablev pivot which. maybe shifted in position yet firmly held against rotation when in use, the
Y pivot pin is interlocked with one end of its slot and held against displacement by ther bushing interloclred with the opposite end of theslet.V In'this shiftin` ofthe pivot to .vary the capacity of the tjawsthe pin may be driven outlthroughthe slotted bearing in the lever and the bushing then moved laterally ,and similarly `removed. The Aparts 'are replaced in like order with the pivot decked at the end of slot' opposite to that previously occupiedf. Means are 'thus provided torshittinglthe vpivot -whilethe tool is invpositionfor use and without removing the jaws from the lever.
j The specific construction of the several parts rlhas been shownand described bnt the invention 'is'not con'ned thereto as changes and alterations may be vmade without departing from thespirit of the invention as recited in the-following claims. j What I claim lis: Y j 1. In a casing tongs, ahan'dleil'ever, grip ping jaws, a pivotal connection Abetween the 'leverand one 'jaw comprising an elongated Vopening in one member', apivot Ipin having lmeans to engage an end of the opening to prevent its rotation, and lmeans for holding said pin held against rotation by engagement with theopposite endoi:l said opening,
. l2. In aqcasingtongs, a handle Aleven-grip ping jaws, a pivotalconneotion between the lever and onejaw comprising anelongated opening in one member, a pivot pin having means to engage an end of the openingto prevent its-rotation, and a bushing engaging said .pin Vand interlocked with the opposite end of the opening. f In; a casing tongs, a vhandle lever, gripping jaws, one of which is formed lwith'an elongated pivot opening vhaving lan angular wall at-each end, -a pivot vpin for said Vlever provided intermediate its ends with means to seat on said wall, anda holding block "engagf .end toseat in the lever bearings kand an intermediate .rib to engageone Aof ,said ways, and 'loi1shilgblockV disposed 'in the -lip slotA and a curved 'faceto Aengage said pin and an opposite rib to seat in a key-way of the slot.
Y6. In a casing tongs, a handle lever formed Witha bifurcated `endhaving bearings therein with recesses at oppositey sides, a pivoting jaw having-.adip to enter saidibifuroation and an elongated slot with key-.ways at its 4 opposite ends, arpi-.vot pin having'pintles at each end to. seatin the ilever'bearings and an intermedi'ate irib tto .engage one vof said ways, and a 'bushing block disposed in the lip slot andfaicurved'face'to engage-said pin vand an oppositesrib to seat in'alfkeyway ofthe slot, a latch jaw mounted upon the pivoting jaw, a gripping ljaw-having aslot,a pressure pin upon the lever offset vfrom 'its pivot andengaging the gripping jawslot, `and a latch connecting :the latch Vand gripping jaws.
7.' In afcasing-ztongs, jawmembers, abiturcated lever :connected'ftooperat'e the same, a `cylindrical pivot Vmember having pintles at l its opposite ends for saidlever and an intermediate radial angular rib'interchangeably engaging `diierentspaced-seats inone offsaid jaw members, andra. bushing lengaging said pivotandfanotherrof said seats.
8. 'In acasingtongs, Ia 'handle lever, a jaw provided with an elongated slot, a vpivot mounted in saidy slot :and formed forinterlocking engagement with either end thereof, bearing portions' for `said handle yat either endgof said pivot, means for retainingthe pivot 1in 'engagement withzeither end or' the slot, a latchij'aw :pivoted to the iirst jaw, a pressure jaw provided with a slot, a `pin on the handle operating in the pressure jaw slot, and a latch connecting the latch and pressure jaws.
In testimony whereof vIalix .my signature.
