Description
Dec..30, 1930. A. IPLICJIAN 1,787,380
- I'NVALID BED 7 Filed Oct. 19, 1928 Fig. 4.
- the bed (the mattress together with the Patented Dec. 30, 1930 ARAM IPLICJIAN, OF ATHENS, GREECE INVALID BED Application filed October 19, 1928, Serial No. 313,596, and in Germany August 3, 1927.
In the handling or nursing of invalids who are unable to walk, especially those with injured legs, it is very burdensome to remove or carry the invalid from a bed to a chair or couch. For the invalid moreover a removal of this description is often injurious and accompanied by pain.
The object of the present invention is a new invalid bed, which is so constructed that removal is avoided and a special chair or couch is not required.
The essential feature of the inventionas'compared with known mattresses having removable sections-consists in providin" porting frame therefor) towards the middl portion thereof, with a part adapted to be drawn out at the side and furnished with an under framework, which part is formed as a chair or seat.
The arrangement is moreover such that the invalid, when lying in bed, by raising the upper portion of the body, can place himself upon this portion of the bed which is adapted to be drawn out. The removable seat portion ofthe bed with the invalid thereon is then drawn out from the side from the framework of the bed.
Before the removable section is drawn out forming part of the chair, supports for the arms and the back of the invalid may be fi ted in position.
The subject of the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accon'ipanying drawing.
Fig. 1 shows the invalid bed in plan with the; removable section serving as a chair or couch in the position where it is orawn forward.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on 1-1, Fi 1., looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the supports adapted to be fitted to the removable portion of the bed when it is to be converted into a chair or seat.
Fig. 4- is a plan showing the removable section of the bed in use for a chair or seat but having the supports for the back and arms fitted in position. 1
Referring to the drawings the bed 1 comprising an underframework and a mattress is provided with a middle cut-away portion. Into this cut-away portion is adapted to slide or fit removably a section 3, which, when pushed in completes the surface of the mattress. It is mounted upon a special supporting framework 1- provided with feet. This portion 3 of the bed together with its supporting framework 4 is of the dimensions and the shape of a seat or stool and provided with a foot rest 5. It is also furnished with projections or extensions or with sockets 9 for the fitting into position of the removable suppoi'tsa1-ms or back-which are provided with pins or fittings 8 for fitting into the sockets.
It will be observed with reference to Figure 3 that the detail attachment constitutes back and arm rests, and said attachm nt may be detachably secured upon the mattress portion 3 after the latter has been pulled out. For this purpose the attachment is provided with studs 8 which fit into ears 9 on the mattress portion 3.
The essential feature of the invention is that at some suitable part of the bed and/or of the mattress a removable section is provided in the shape of the seat of a chair which section is supported by an appropriate under framework.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is iin invalid bed having a mattress provided with a cutout, said cut-out being adapted for the reception of a detachable mattress portion which completes the mattress, said mattress portion being provided with an underframe and a foot rest and securing means as eyes or the like, for the attachment of a detachable back rest after the mat-tress portion is pulled out from the bed.
in witness whereof I affix my si 'nature.
ARAM iPLihJIAN.
