`The principal object of .my invention has been to provide a filter so designed that it shall have a large arca of filtering surface,
` and be so compactly arranged that it shall 30 occupy but little space.
Another object has been to provide a device of this nature having relatively few parts which may be quickly assembled for use or disassembled for cleaning.
Moreover, my device is provided with fiitering units so treated that they may be stretched and maintained taut While in use.
The above objects and advantages have been accompli-shed by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, of which:

My filter comprises an open body frame 5 having sidewalls 6 and 7, a top 8 and a bottom 9.
In the side Wall 6 is preferably provided the outletfor the air. This outlet comprises a. sleeve 10 which is placed through an opening 11 inthe side Wall and which extends some distance beyond the outer face of the side vvall 6, thus providing a projection 12. The sleeve is provided with a fiange 13 which is disposed on the inside of the wall and which is permanently secured thereto by means of rivets 14. The outlet pipe 15 of the filter is provided with a flange 16 which fits over the projection 12 of the sleeve 10. The flange 16 is provided with apertured ears 17 which fit over bolts 18. These bolts are extended outwardly from the-inside of the Wall 6 and are preferably permanently se- 1929. Serial No. 357,040.

In opposite faces of-the top 8 and bottom 9 are formed V-shaped recesses 25, thusproviding a zig-zag surface as clearly shown in Fie. 2 Within Which are fastened the filter umts `26, to be hereinafter described. Arranged at keach side of the frame 5 is a retaining frame 27.` Each retaining frame is provided at each of its vertical sides with a bar 28 and across its top and bottom With a retaining bar 29. Each retaining bar 29 is provided on its edge vvhich faces the center of the filter with a plurality of projections 33 which fit into the notched or recessed sur- 'faces of the top and bottom 8 and 9, respectively, of the frame 5. The retaining frames 27 are open except for the framework formed by the vertical bars 28 and the retaining bars 29. `For the purpose of protection a louver plate 30 is arranged at each side of the filter' and over each retaining frame 27. Each plate is provided with a plurality of louvers 31 whereby air may pass into the filter but dirt and foreifrn matter dropping from a point above the filter Will be prevent-ed from entering the salne. The louver plates 30 and retaining frames 27 are preferably secured together and to the body 5 of the filter by means of bolts 32, 'arranged one at each cor- 5ner of the filter.
The filter units 26 of my device are pref# erably made of felt or other suitable closely woven filtering material, and the material may be stitched with rows of stitching arranged at right angles as shown in Fig. l. Because of the stitching, the material may be stretched to a definite point and held in place more firmly than if the stitching is omitted. Each filter unit is stretched across one iside of the device from the top 8 to the bottom 9 thereof. The filtering material is placed in the recesses or grooves 25 and held there While the retaining frame 27 with its projections 33 is placed in position. Obviously, the projections ofthe retaining bars 29 of the frame will enter the recesses in the top 8 and bottom -9 l of the bodyfrafne and securely hold the filter units in place at the top and bottom of the device.
A cover 34 may be provided and this extends over the top 8 and serves to protect the vupper exposed edges of the filter units. This top is provided with a downwardly extending fiange and is secured in place by means of screws 35. v
In the form of invention shown in Figs. l to 3, `the loutlet pipe is attached to the side wall 6 and, therefore, arranged on a horizontal plane. Where, however, it is desired to have the outlet pipe vertically arranged, the modification shown in Fig. 4 would be employed. In this figure, 36 is the body frame of the device which is provided in its bottom with an apertured plate 37. This .apertured plate is arranged some distance above the bottom edge of the frame, whereby a chamber 38 is provided.. The apertured plate 37 is, of course, providedwith notched or recessed surfaces as is the top 8 and bottom 9 of the form of invention above described, and a retaining frame such as that shown and describedin connection with the other form of invention isvlikewise used in this form. The bottom of the body frame is closed vby means of an attachment plate 39 which is provided with a screw-threaded connection 40.
In cases where it is desired to omit then louver plates, and the filter units are not otherwise protected, it is wise to provide a suitable support for -the units. Such a modification is shownin Fig. 5, where 41 is the filtering material and 42 a wire screen which is arranged at one or may be arranged at both sides of the filtering unit to support and procectit. l
Obviously, when my device is in use air will be drawn thrbugh the openings provided by the louvefs in the louver plates 30 and through the filtering units.` The air will be drawn into the space between the units and thence out through the sleevel 10 and outletl pipe 15 to the place of use. i
lVhile I have shown and described there- ('esses and projections as being V-shaped,' it
is obvious that they may be formed in the shape of corrugations or be rectangularly shaped.
These and other modifications of the de tails herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims, and I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to the exact embodiment herein shown and de-v scribed, the form shown being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: .1. A filtering device comprising an open body frame, the body frame being provided with side walls, a top, and. a bottom, the top corrugated edges, an1 open retaining frame at each side of the body, having corrugated edges for co-operative engagement with the corrugated edges of the top and bottom of the body frame, a filtering unit secured at' each side of the body and held in place between the corrugated edges of the co-acting body frame and retaining frame, and means for connecting the filter to a source of suction.
2. A filtering device comprising an open body frame, the body frame being provided with side walls, a top, and a bottom, the top and bottom of the frame being formed with corrugated edges, an open retaining frame at each se of the body, having corrugated edges for co-operative engagement with the corrugated edges of the top and bottom of the body frame, a filtering unit secured at each side of the body and held in place between the corrugated edges of the co-acting body frame and retaining frame, a louver plate arranged at each side of the filter and secured to the outer face of each retaining frame, and means for connecting the filter to a source of suction.
3. A filtering device comprising an open body frame, a corrugated filtering unit carried at each side of the frame, and a suction connection at one side of the frame comprising a sleeve passing through and extending from one of the sidewalls, means for securing the sleeve permanently in place, bolts projecting through the side wall and secured into position, a suction pipe flange engageable with the projecting end of the sleeve, and means for securing the flange to the bolts.
4. A filtering device comprising an open body frame, the body frame being provided with side walls, a top, and abottom, the top and bottom of the frame being formed with corrugated edges, an open retaining frame at each side of the body, having corrugated edges for co-operative engagement with the corrugated edges of the top and bottom of the body frame, a filtering unit secured at' each side of the body frame and held' in place between the corrugated edges of the lco-acting body frame and retaining frame,l
