YARN TENSION DEVICE Fil ed April 9. 1929 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 30, 1930 JOHN 0.;MokEAN, or WESTF'IELD, massacnusntrrs, ASSIGNOR T0 Fosrnn MACHINE PATE'NTaOFF-ICE COMPANY, OF WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS yann-mnnsron nnvlon Applicationifiled April 9, 1929. Serial no. 353,799;
The object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in the construction,
form and arrangement of the several parts of a device for tensioning yarn, whereby the threading of the yarn through the device may be facilitated.
My invention comprises a tension deviceof the gravity operated tension washer type, in which the supporting frame is provided With a ring portion spanned by a spider which forms a 6 support for the coacting tension washers and their'retaining pin. porting frame is a-lso provided with an elongated closed: loop. offset from and partly surrounding the. ring portion, the outer and inner walls of which loop are shaped 'tofacilitate the'th-readingof the yarn, between said tension washers, pairs of leading-in and leading-out recesses being formed at the ends of the loop forguiding the yarn as it enters thetension device from one direction and leaves thetension device in another direc tion.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1. represents the tension device in top plan, the path of'the yarn through the device being indicated by dotted lines;
Fig. 2, represents the tension device in side elevation;
vFig. 3 represents a tension device a b Fig. 4 represents a vertical central section taken in the planeof the line IV+IV of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The supporting. frame of the tension device isshown as removably attached to a vertical bar 1 by providing the frame with a lug 2 having an open-sided recess 3 for receiving the'bar and" a clampscrewa for securing the frame to the bar. The frame is provided with a ring portion 5 which is spannediby a spider support for the tension washers and their retaining pin. The three arms 6, 7, 8 of the spider lead to a centrally arranged'vertical hollow lug 9. The tension washerretaining pin 10 uprisesfrom this lug 9 and it is herein shown as having a reduced shank 11 forming a shoulder 12 resting on the top front elevation of the The sup-.
of the lug, the lower end of the shank projectingbeyond the bottom of the lug and threaded to receive anut 13 for securing the pin to thelug 9.
The under tension washer 14 has a depending inner annular flange 15 surrounding the pin 10 and spaced therefrom, and a downwardly and outwardly directed peripheral flange 16 which rests upon the arms 6, 7, 8 of the spider, the upper surfaces of said arms being stepped to form seats for the said peripheral flange 16 of the under tension washer.
The upper tension washer 17 normally rests, by, gravity, upon'the lower tension washer 14;. 'This upper tension washer is shown as having an uprising inner annular flange 18 surrounding and loosely fitting the washer retaining pin lO'and an upwardly and outwardly inclined peripheral flange 19' coacting with the downwardly and outwardly inclined flange 16 of the lower tension washer, to facilitate the entry of the yarn between the washers. v
The washer retaining pin'lO is preferably provided'with an annular groove 20 located inthe plane of the meeting faces of the two tension washers for receiving the yarnasit passes around the pin.
The supporting frame of the tension device is also provided with an elongated closed loop 21, offset from the ring portion 5 and partially surroundingfit, the inner curved wall of the loop being the outer wall of the ring portion 5, and the outer curved wall of the loop being denoted by 22. The outer wall of the ring portion is provided with two uprising flanges 23, 2 1, forming guards for facilitating the threading ofthe yarn and for preventing the wrong threading of the yarn. These flanges provide between them a shallow top recess 25. The side portions of the outer wall 22 of the loop 21 are located above the plane of the ring portion and thread guiding recesses 26, 27 are thereby formed between them and the uprising flanges 23, 24. These side portions of the outer wall of the loop are curved down into the plane of the ring portion to form a shallow front top recess 28 and two shallow bottom recesses 29, 30, the
last named bottom recesses 29, 30, coacting with the grooves 26, 27. respectively, to guide theyarn into and out of the tension device.
. In threading the yarn it is pulled upwardly through the closed loop 21 and the openloopthus formed in the yarn is passed over the pin and in betweenthe tension washers 14; and 17. As the winding of the yarn starts, it will be drawn into the shallow recess of the washer retaining pin '10; the incoming portion of the yarn'will be drawn along the bottoms of the recesses 26, 29, and .the out,-
going portion of the yarn will be drawn along the bottoms of the recessesQ'Z-and 39. Y The top shallow recesses and 28 in the opposite walls of the loop 21 permit the ready'grasping ofthe yarnto-pull it upwardlythrough the loop for threading the yarn. The-up.
.resorted to in the construction, form and arrangementof the several parts without departing fromthe spiritand scope of my invention; hence, I do not wish to limit myself to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
