This invention relates to improvements in looking closure for pressure systems, and
more particularly to return bend fittings such Figure 1 is a top plan view of apipe bend constructed in accordance with my invention, but with one of the set locks removed.

Referring to details of the drawings, indicates the body of a 180 pipe bend fitt ng of the type used in tube stills or the like, adapted to have a pair of tubes attached thereto in parallel relation, as by rolling them into the lower end of the fitting (not shown) The body of the head is provided with a semicircular passage 12, of uniform circular cross sectional area, excepting where communicating with two circular plug openings 13, 13, at the upper end of the fitting, as shown.
Closure plugs 14, 14, are fitted in the openings 13, 13, each plug-having a curved deflector face conforming to the shape of the passage 12 when said plug is'in place. The two setsof plugs and their locking devices shown herein, being similar, a description ,of one set will suffice for the understanding of both. 7
The upper end of plug14 is closely fitted in the opening 13 as by an enlarged bearing 16 engaging a seat 17. In order to insure 1929. Serial No. 345,188.
a pressure-tight joint, the bearing 16 is usually ground in its seat.
The locking means for the plug comprises a set lock 23 in which a set screw 22 is threaded axially. The set lock has a pair of projecting lugs 24, 24, arranged to fit beneath projecting locking flanges 25, 25 carried on a circular upstanding part 26 of the casing 10. The inner side of said part 26 opens laterally to permit the set lock 23 to he slid sidewise into place over the'plug seat, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. As seen in these figures, and also in Figure 3 the lugs 24, 24 of said set lock are preferably curved toward the closed curved end of the upstanding part 26, so that said set lock can only be fitted properly in one angular position relative to the casing 10, and when in place beneath the lugs 24, 24, has non-rotating engagement therewith,
Interlocking means are also provided between the lower face of the set lock and the plug, so as to insure the proper positioning ofthe plug with its deflector face 15 within the passage 12. In the form shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3, the plug 14 is provided with .a -pro ecting head 27 having two opposite 1 side vfaces 27a, 27a, converging toward the open side ofthe curved upstanding part 26 when the deflector face 15 is in its proper angular position in the bend. The under face of the set lock 23 is provided with a slot 28 having cooperating side bearing faces 28a, 28a adapted to engage the side faces 27 a, 27a of the plug head, as shown in Fig. 1.
The arrangement is such that the plug 14 must be in proper angular position in its scat before the set lock 23 can be fully seated between the locking flanges 24, 24. When the parts are properly arranged however, the set lock with its set screw can be moved into axial position over the center of plug head 27, and the set screw can then be screwed down into final locked position.
further advantage is the provision of a rela- I tively free opening at one side of the plug, together with asubs'tantial projecting head on the plug, so asto permit the use'of atool for prying the plug out of its seat when necessary. The improved construction also permits ready access to the plug for grinding.
In the modified form of lock shown in Figures 4 and 5, the plug head 27 c is substantially circular excepting where provided with a flattened face 27d. The cooperating set ifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A plug lock for pressure systems comprising a casing having an aperture, and a plug having an inner deflector surface seated therein, upstanding walls on opposite sides of said aperture and open at one side, opposed locking flanges on said walls, a set lock movable laterally through said open side into non-rotatable engagement beneath said flanges, means on said plug for interlocking non-rotatable engagement with said set lock and permitting insertion of the latter beneath said locking flanges in but one angular position of said plug relative to said casing, and a set screw threaded in said set lock adapted to engage with said plug when said locking piece-is engaged with said locking flanges.
2. A plug lock for pressure sytscms comprising a casln having an aperture, and a plug having an inner deflector surface seated therein,upstanding walls on opposite sides of said aperture and open at one side, opposed locking flanges on said walls, a set lock n1ovable laterally through said open side into engagement beneath said flanges,.means on said plug having interlocking non-rotatable engagement with said set lock,and a set screw threaded to engage with said plug when said locking piece is engaged with said locking flanges.
3. In a pipe bend fitting having a curved inner passage, a plug closure having an inner deflector surface forming part of said passage, a head carried by said plug, a set lock movable laterally into non-rotatable interlockin engagement with said head, a set screw threadedinsaid set lock and engageable with said head, and opposed locking flanges on said fitting open at one side to receive said set lock in but one angular position relative thereto. 1
4. A pipe fitting or coupling .having a curved passage and an opening intersecting the passage opposite one end thereof, the opening having a plug seat, a plug engaging said seat and provided with *an extension having a cavity in its inner end .and conforming to and forming a part of the curved wall of the passage; the plug having a head at its outer end provided with a flat face, and means for clamping the plug upon its seat, provided with a 'art en'gaging the flat face of the head to inhibit turning movement of the plug.
5. A pipe fitting or coupling having a curved passage 'and an opening-intersecting the passage opposite one end thereof, the
opening having a'plug seat, a plug engaging said seat and provided with an extension having a cavity in its inner end conforming to and forming a part of the curved wall of the passage; the plug having a head at its outer end provided with a flat face, a twopart means for clamping the plug' upon its seat, provided with a part engaging the flat face of the head to inhibit turning movement of the plug, and means rigid with the fitting and engaging one part of the clamping means and preventing turning movement thereof.
6. A pipe fitting or coupling having a curved passage and an opening intersecting the passage opposite one end thereof, and provided with a plug seat, a pair of arms rigid with the fitting and disposed at opposite sides of said seat, the arms bearing a converging relation in one direction, a plug engaging said seat and provided with a head disposed between said arms and having a flatv face at one side, the plug also having an extension filling said opening of the fitting and provided with a cavity at its inner end which cross-se'ctionally conforms to the cross-sectional curvature of said passage and also conforms to the longitudinal curvature of the outer wall of said passage, an element fitting slidingly between said arms and limited thereby as regards movement toward the converging ends of said arms, said element having a longitudinal rib engaging the flat face of said head to inhibit turning moveinent thereof and to hold the same with the said cavity of the plug extension forming a. part of the outer wall of said passage and conforming thereto longitudinally and cross sectionally, and means engaging said element and the head of the plug and-adjustable to clamp the plug firmly upon its seat by reaction of said element against. the said arms.
