Application filed May 19, 1928. Seria1.No. 278,942.
This invention pertains to composite piles and is an improvement on the invention disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 143,565, filed October 23, 1926, for sink- 'ing composite piles. That application discloses a method and apparatus for sinking composite piles, especially composite piles comprising a lower section of wood and an upper section of concrete In the copending 1 application the method disclosed for joining the wood and concrete sections is generally satisfactory, but under certain circumstances, when the pile is subject to unusual lateral stresses, it is found desirable to provide a joint better able to resist such stresses.
The principal object, therefore, of the present invention is to disclose an improved form of joint between'sections of composite piles.
Further and other objects and advantages Will be hereinafter set forth in the accompanying specification and claims, and shown in the drawings, which by way of illustration show what is now considered to be the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a View, partly in cross-section, of
the upper end of the lower section of a composite pile, with removable shell in place and driving mechanism in position. v
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectionof the upper end of lower section and lower end of upper'section prior to removalof the removable shell.
The lower pile section, designated 10,- is provided at. its upper end with atenon 12,
g and, below the tenon, a turned portion 1%,
which leaves a shoulder 16 where it joins the body of pile 10.
Tenon 12 is bored at its top and provided with a screw socket 18, held in place by a cross pin 20. A reinforcing bar 22 is screwed into socket 18. c
By means of hammer 24, through follower 26'fitted to tenon 12 as shown in Fig.1, pile section 10 is driven until shoulder 16 is near ground level. According to the above co- 4; pending application, the shell 30 is then slipped over turned portion 1d and the driving is resumed, shell 30 being driven with pile 10 until the desired depthis reached. Then rod 22 is screwed into place, shell 30 is 60 filled with concrete which surrounds the tenon and reinforcing rod, moved, and the operation is complete.
In the present invention, however, a somewhat different procedure. is followed after the jower section has been driven to ground leve Before applying removableshell 30' Shell 30 is red to turned portion 1%, another shell or sleeve 32 is first put in place. .Sleeve' 32is of comparatively thin. material, preferably steel. 1t is sllpped over turnedportion ll and its lowor end is criinped as .at 34, into a groove 36 turned in 14- just above shoulder 16. vShell 30 is then'slipped over sleeve 32 to rest on shoulder'16, and the pile and shell 30ers driven as before, to the desired depth.
At tha-tpoint in the operation an upper pile section 40 of precast concrete, reinforced if desired, is lowered into place on tenon 12,.
within'shell 30 and sleeve 32. lhis precast section 40 is provided with a central bore i2 and av radial passage l lffrom bore 42 to the outside of the section. j
*After section 40 is in place the upper end of sleeve 32' is criinped against'section 4:0 as at 16, rod .22 is screwed into socket 18'and grout is poured from above into bore 4-2 from which it flows'through channel 145 into the annular space 48 between pile section 40 and crimped sleeve 32. Shell 30 is afterwards removed.
It will be appreciatedithat the above ar rangement securely locks the'concrete member'40 to the sleeve 32, thereby providingv a tension and compression reinforcement ex tending around the entire joint and locking the tivopile sectionstogether. -Sleeve 32 greatly increases the section modulus through i the joint and the strengthof the jointis increased accordingly}. 1 p It is to be understood that the invention is not limitedv tothe construction herein specifically illustrated out can be embodied said upper section but spaced therefrom to form an annular space between said upper section and said shell, means for sealing the space between the upper end of said sleeve and said upper pile section, and a passage connecting said annular space with the hollow interior of said upper section whereby when said hollow interior is filled with freshly mixed. concrete the concrete will flow through said passage, into said annular space to form therein a concrete shell to reinforce the joint between said plle sectlons.
2. In a composite pile, in combination, a
.lower section, all-upper Section; turned portion at the upper end of said lower section,.a circumferential groove in said turned portion, a metallic sleeve surroundingsaid turned portion and extending above said lower pile to form an annular space between said sleeve and the lower portion of said upper pile section, the lower end of said sleeve being criinped into said circumferential groove and the upper end of said sleeve being orimped against said upper plle section, and a concrete she'll formed by pouring groutinto the annular space between the sleeve and upper pile section.
' 3; Theinvention set forth in claim 2 in which a passage is provided from said annual space to a cavity in said upper pile section, and said annular space is filled by i grout forced through said cavity and pas-' sage. v
4. In the method of forming a composite pile having an upper section resting on a lower section, the steps'of placing a shell to surround the upper end of the lower section and the lower end of the upper section whereby an annular space is provided between said upper section and said shell, at-
taching said shell to said lower section, seal-I ing the upper end of said shell against the upper pile section to prevent leakage of grout therethrough, and filling said annular space with grout for the purpose set forth.
5. In the method of forming a composite pile having a lower section with a tenon and w an upper section having a lower end surroundingsaid tenon, the steps of placing a metallic sleeve to surround the upper end of the lower section and the lower end of the upper section, whereby an annular space i is provided between said upper section and said shellsealing the upper and lower ends of said shell against said pile sections to prevent leakage of grout, andfilling said annular space with grout to form therein a shell of concrete whereby said'tenon, said metallic sleeve, and SELld 'COIlCIBlZG. shell cooperate to strengthen the joint between said sections.
In testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signature.
