GEORGE W. BAUGHMAN, OF EDGEWOOID BOROUGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE UNION S REI'I'ICH & fiIG-NAL COMPANY, OF S'WISSVALE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORA- TION OF PENNSYLVANIA TRACKWAY APPARATUS FOR AUTOMATICTRAIN-CONTROL SYSTEMS Application filed November 28, 1928;
My invention relates to traclrway apparatus for an automatic train control system in which energy is at times supplied to the trackway for the control of apparatus car-' ried on a train.
I will describe two forms of trackway apparatus embodying my inventioinand will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.
in the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view illustrating one form of tracliway apparatus embodying my invention. F 2 is a view showing a modified form the apparatus and also embodying my invention.
Referring first to Fig. 1, the reference characters and l designate the track rails of a stretch of railway track over which traffic normally moves in the direction indicated by the arrow. These rails are divided, by means of insulated joints 2, to form a plurality of successive track sections A-B, BG, etc. Each track section is provided with a track circuit comprising a battery D connected nor the rails adjacent one end of the section, and a track relay designated by the reference character R with a distinguishing exponent connected across the rails adjacent tli site en d of the section.
v i B is territory by which I mean that the portion o 'heright of this point is provided s sn g verning means on the train in accordance with traffic conditions.
Traffic entering train control territory is governed by a tracllway signal designated by the reference character S and located adjacent point B. As here shown the signal S is a ight signal comprising two units and 51 illustrated in Fig. 1 3
' the code transmltter is'energized. When reat the entrance of train control ot shown in the drawing for anged when lighted to indicate stop or Serial N 0. 322,455.
nated in general by the reference character K and comprising an armature 4 which is arranged to be swung alternately into engagement with two-fixed contacts i and 4 when source of alternating current not shown in the drawing. hen a train enters section A-B,
therefore, and de-energizes relay R the code transmitter K is set into operation so that contacts 4-4 and l-el are operated alternately. Each time contact l-4 is closed, currentflows from terminal X, over front contact 4-4 of code transmitter K and primary 5 of a transformer T to terminal Y. The secondary 6 of transformer T is connected through prlmary 7 oftransformer G directly with the trackway loop L. It follows, therefore, that when the code transmitter is being operated, periodically interrupted current is supplied to the trackway loop L. The secondary 8 of transformer G is connected, through a rectifier J with the winding of a slow releasing relay P so that this relay holds its front contacts closed continuously when the code transmitter K is operated.
The code transmitter K also controls an auxiliary circuit including the primary 9 of a transformer H, it being noticed that each time contact 4 9? of the code transmitter is closed, that is, during the interruptions bewith the winding of a slow releasing relay P so that relay P holds its front contacts closed continuously when code transmitter K is being operated.
The signal S is controlled in part by relays P and-P so that when either of these relays is (lo-energized a circuit is completed from a source of energy such as battery Q, over back contact lei of relay P or back contact 15 of relay P and unit 50 of signal S back to battery When this circuit is closed, the signal S indicates stop. If, however, the code transmitter K is being operated, relays P and P are both energized as explained hereinbefore, and it relay R is energized current flows from battery Q, over front contact 11 of relay P front contact 12 of relay P front contact 13 of relay R unit 51 of signal S and back to battery Q. Under these conditions, unit 51 of signal S is lighted to indicate proceed. It relay R is de-encrgized when a train enters section A--B, the circuit justtraced for unit 51 of signal S is interrupted, and a circuit is then completed for unit 50 of signal S over frontcontacts of relays P and P and back contact 13 of relay R It follows, therefore, that signal S can indicate proceed. only if relay R is energized and relays P and P are both energized. It, therefore, the code transmitter fails to operate, or if the circuit for the trackway loop L is for any reason interrupted, one or both of'relays P and P will be de-energized and signal S will then indicate stop, independently of traffic conditions in advance, so that thejoperator of the train passing signal S will be informed. that the train carried portion of the train control system is not conditioned to place the train under the influence of the train control system.
Referring now to Fi 2, the signal S as here shown, is of the semaphore type and is controlled by a manually operable lever U which may be located at a point remote from the signal, as for example, in an interlocking cabin. Operativelyconnected with the lever U is a segment 37 which co-operates with a dog 38 controlled by a magnet M for zit-times controlling movements of the lever U. As shown in the drawing, the lever U occupies its normal position, and normal coi'itact- 19 closed. If the lever is moved in a clockwise direction toward its reverse position, contact 19 opens. The motion of the lever is arres Til. however, by co-operation of doc; 38 and ment 37 unless magnet M is energized. If magnet M energized to release the segment. 37, the lever U may be moved to its full rcverse position in which case reverse contact 40 is closed. As shown in the drawin the circuit for signal S is open, so that this 11:11 indicates stop. Furthermore, the code transmitter K is at rest so that relays P d P are both deenergized. A circuit is now closed, however, for an approach relay V which circuit may be traced from battery Q, over wires 18 and 13, normal contact 19 of lever U, wire 20, winding of relay lV, and wires 21, 23 and 2%, back to battery Q.
I will now assume that the operator wishes to clear signal S He first moves lever U away from its normal position, until the motion of the lever is arrested by the dog 38 and segment 37. In this position of lever U, the normal contact 19 is open, and the circuit for relay is therefore interrupted, so that this relay becomes deenergized. A circuit is then completed from terminal X, over back contact 25 of relay 1V, wires 26 and 27, and winding of transmitter K to terminal Y. The code transmitter is therefore set into operation and current flows from terminal X, over back contact 25 of relay W, wires 26, 28 and 29, and thence over contacts 4.l and 4-4" of code transmitter K to transformer H and T as described in connection with Fig. 1. The
It should be pointed out that an aui-ziliary circuit provided for supplying energy to the code transmitter K over back contact 3 of rel ay R The purpose of this arrangement is to set the code transmitter 1: into operation when a train enters section A -l3 even though lever U is not moved away from its normal position in an attempt to cl signal S ll: will be manifest from the is n that the lever U can be moved to rev po it' for clearing S only if the tract. loop L is l interrupted cur" so that relay P and P are both o If the operator wishes to restore F gnal Q to the stop position, he moves lover U away from its reve se p" ion, until the lever is arrested by men 37 and. dog 3-3. thereliv interrupting the circuit for signal S and remeans for energizing said lock it and ditions rela Twill be ener ized and if sec-' tion AB is unoccupied so that relay R is energized, the code transmitter K will be stopped and the supply of periodically interrupted current 'tothe trackway loop L will be discontinued.
Although I have herein shown and described only two forms or" traclrwa apparatus embodying my invention, it is understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein withinthe scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
