IMPROVEMENT. IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 78,665, dated J une 1 3, 1876; application filed May 25, 1876.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of the connecting portions of my bale-tie as constructed by me.
The object of my invention is that the tie can be clasped or adjusted with less length of wire, as it does not require to be passed through the loop any farther than simply to bring the end of the wire to the inside of the loop in the other end of the wire, and no farther, thereby preventing the slack of the wire and the springing back after being clasped, and also that the wire is doubled in the peculiar formation of the end of the wire, forming a figure 8, and passing through the loop, thereby making it much stronger, and not liable to draw through the loop by a heavy strain.
In order to enable persons skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In making my bale-tie, I take wire of a suitable size and strength, and of the length required to surround or inclose the bale, and
twist after doubling the ends, in the manner shown in the drawing, in such a way as to form on one end the loop a, and upon the opposite end the hook or bar I), the latter conforming in shape, when twisted, substantially to the figure S, the length of which is greater than the diameter of the loop a, and is very easily inserted at the time when the bale is compressed by means of the peculiar construction of the elongated loop a;
I do not wish to confine myself to the peculiar form or configuration of said loop a or its connecting counterpart b, as the form may be varied, and still the principle involved in the invention be retained by such modifications.
After ascertaining the proper diameter of the bales, and the degree of compression required to apply properly the bale-tie as described by me, I so construct such tie that its length shall be the circumference of the bale when suitably compressed, and the wire being in a condition to be bent'or turned at either end, the hook or bar I) can be very easily adjusted to and within the loop a. The loop a is also, at its rounded end, bent upward, in order to more freely admit the bar or hook within such loop.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The-wire bale-tie having the rounded end of the loop a bent' upward to freely admit the connecting twisted end 11, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
