Ato the axis of the shaft and substantially parallel to the axis of the lever communicates driving power to said lever by means of a connector rod. Because of the fact that the arcs of movements of the lever and crank are in different planes it is necessary to provide some form of universal joint which will not drop oil on the cloth or warp below the j acquard.
It is an important object of my present invention to provide a connection between a jacquard lever and an operating rod one element of which comprises a pair of oil or paraiin saturated wooden blocks and the other element of which is a ball.
A still further object of my present invention relates to provision of means for holding the wooden blocks together under suiiicient pressure to prevent lost motion but 1n such a way as to prevent compression of the wood under the strain of holding devices such as bolts.
Another obj ect of myinvention is the provision of a form of joint which may be used on either side of the jacquard lever when two levers are present.
A further object of my invention is to provide the bearing blocks with holes somewhat larger than the holding bolts so that the 'blocks may adjust themselves to the ball.
l/Vith these and other obj ects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein a convenient embodiment of my invention is set forth,

Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 5 I have shown a jacquard mechanism J which is operated by a lever l0 pivoted about a horizontal axis l1 which is substantially parallel to the warp threads. rl`he top shaft l2 of the loom has secured thereto an arm 13 which may in eect be the hand wheel and said arm is piVOtally connected as at 11i to an upright driving rod l5. rlhe shaft l2 is given a complete revolution every pick of the loom so that the lever 10 is given a vertical reciprocation for every flight of the shuttle. rfhe part-s thus far described are of common construction and operate in the usual manner. do not wish to be limited, however, to a form of jacquard wherein the lever lO is given a complete reciprocation for each pick of the loom.
In carrying my present invention into effect provide a ball holder 2O having a body 2l which slides along the lever 10 and is held in adjusted longitudinal position by means of set screws 22. Depending from the hub is an arm 23 through which entends the shank 24 of a ball member 25. rlhe shank is threaded and is held in position on the arm by means of a check nut 26. A shoulder 2'? on the ball member engages the left `side of the arm as viewed in Fig. 8 to limit movement of the ball to the right.
The upright rod is provided with a. socket element 30 the lower portion of which is formed of a metallic plate 31 having a threaded boss 32 into which extends the driving rod l5. The upper part of the socket element is provided with a second plate 33 which has two threaded holes 34, one oit which is clearly shown in F ig. 6. Bolts 35 extend through the bottom plate 31 and also upwardly through the block 33, being threaded into the holes 3l and held in fixed position by means of check nuts 36.
Located between plates 3l and 33 are two wooden bearing blocks or members 37 and 38 which are, respectively, above and below the ball 25. These blocks have alignin0f bores 39 and 40, respectively, through which extend the bolts 35. The bores 39 and i0 as shown in Fig. 6 are slightly larger in dialneter than the bolts The upper and lower bearing members are provided with substantially hemispherical cavities Lll and 42, respectively, and the upper bearing member has an abutting surface which engages the upper surface da of the lower member 38.
In assembling the joint the bolts 35 will be inserted through the lower plate 3l and upwardly through the bores il@ oit' the lower bearing member 33. The ball will then beinserted in the cavity of the lower bleek, after which the upper bearing member 37 will be put in position, the bolts 35 being then extended upwardly through the bores 39 of said upper bearing member. The plate 33 is then placed on to-p of the upper bearing member and the bolts rotated by means of a wrench which engages the heads thereof. In this way the bolts are threaded intr the threaded holes 34 of the upper block. Then sufficient pressure has been brought to bear on the ball by the upper and lower blocks the check nuts 36 will be set in position so that a further tightening' of the blocks due to changes of the bolts 35 will not be possible.
It will be seen from Fig. 5 and also Figs. 2 and 3 that the ball joint occupies very little space measured in a horizontal direct-ion. This feature is of consequence where a jacquard employs two or more levers 10. Upward movement of the driving rod l5 will move the socket member 30 upwardly to lift the ball 25, thereby rocking the lever l0 about its axis 1l.
By reason of the fact that the bearing members 37 and 38 are formed of oil or paraffin impregnated wooden blocks it is unnecessary to apply any form of lubricant and for this reason the possibility of soiling the yarn or cloth is obviated.
If wearing should develop so that the socket becomes somewhatlarger than the ball 25, the socket member may be taken apart and the surfaces 43 and 44 sandpapered or otherwise finished so that when reassembled the cavities il and 42 will have proper bearing relations with the ball 25.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I theniisel-ves to the ball have provided a simple and eilicient form of connection between the driving rod and the jacquard lever so constructed that the use ot oil or similar lubricant is unnecessary. It will further be seen that the check nuts 36 actto hold the predetermined setting oi the bearing members 37 and 33 to prevent clamping and binding of the ball 25. Furthermore, when wearing develops on the part of the wooden members the sur aces i3 and 44: may be ground to take up any looseness which may have developed in the use of the joint. It will also be noted that by reason of the fact thatthe bores 39 and l0 are somewhat larger in diameter than the bolts 35 the wooden. bearing members are able to adjust Again, by reiferring to Figs. 2, 3 and 5 it will be seen that the joint may be used on either side of the driven lever, due to the fact that the ball is held substantially centrally between the vcrtical outside faces ot the wooden blocks and the cavity between said blocks is accessible from either or the outside faces.
Having thus described my invention it will be seen that changes and modiiications may be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit` and scope of the invention and I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim is:
1.k In driving mechanism tor a Jacquard loom having a driven lever clement and a reciprocating driving rod element, a member secured in longitudinal adjusted position along one element, a ball secured thereto, and a socket member 'for the ball carried by the other element, said socket member comprising a pair of lubricant impregnated blocks, a pair of plates between which the blocks lie, and retaining means extending through both plates and blocks to draw the plates together and hold the blocks in position.
2. In driving mechanism for a Jacquard loom having a driven lever element and a reciprocating driving rod element, a member secured in longitudinal adjusted position along one element, a ball secured thereto, and a socket member for the bally carried by the other element, said socket nember comprising a pair of spaced plates, a pair of recessed lubricant impregnated wooden blocks between the plates, and bolts extending through the plates and blocks to hold the latter in bearing relation with respect to the ball.
3. In driving mechanism for a Jacquard loom having a driven lever element and a reciprocating driving rod element, a member secured in longitudinal adjusted position along one element, a ball secured thereto, and a socket member for the ball carried by jthe other element, said socket member comprising a pair of spaced plates one of which has threaded holes therein, bolts extending lili) through both plates and threaded into the threaded holes, and lubricant impregnated bearing blocks located between the plates and having recesses to receive the ball, said bolts holding the blocks in bearing position with respect to the ball.
4. In driving mechanism for a Jacquard loom having a driven lever element and a reciprocating driving rod element, a member secured in longitudinal adjusted position along one element, a ball secured thereto, and a socket member for the ball carried by the other element, said socket member comprising a pair of spaced plates one of which e has threaded holes therein, bolts extending through both plates and threaded into the threaded holes, lubricant impregnated bearing blocks located between the plates and having recesses to receive the ball, said bolts holding the blocks in bearing position with respect to the ball, and check means to prevent relative rotation of the bolts with respect to the plate having the threaded holes therein.
5. In driving mechanism for a Jacquard loom having a driven lever element and a reciprocating driving rod element, a member secured in longitudinal adjusted position along one element, a ball secured thereto, and a socket member for the ball carried by the other element, said socket member comprising a pair of spaced plates one of which has threaded holes therein, bolts extending through both plates and threaded into the threaded holes, and lubricant impregnated bearing blocks located between the plates and having recesses to receive the ball, said bolts holding the blocks in bearing position with respect to the ball, said bearing blocks having holes therein through which the bolts extend, the holes being of larger diameter than the diameter of the bolts.
