FETES, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA raro rll`his invention relates to new and improved fabric which is produced by the means illustrated and described in a (zo-pending application which bears Serial Number 437,095 filed by me on March 19, 1930.

An important object of the invention is to provide a fabric of the' aforementioned character of a combined woven and knitted construction'whereby one side of the fabric or a portion thereof is knitted without the incorporation of any additional threads other than those which are ordinarily used in making woven fabric.

Another important object of the invention is to rovide a fabric wherein the knitted portion 1s formed by certain of the weftV threads constituting a part of the fabric.

A still further important object of the invention is to provide a combined woven and knitted fabric which will maintain its shape against longitudinal and lateral strain.

Other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following specification when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, and wherein lFigure 1 is a plan view of a piece of fabric constructed in accordance withthis invention.

Figure 2 is a face view of a portion of fabric constructed in accordance with this invention with the threads constituting the same widely separated.

Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view.

Figure d is a longitudinal sectional view of the fabric.

1n the drawings the warp threads are designated by the reference numeral 1, and interwoven therethrough are the weft threads 2 which are looped and interlocked as at 3 to provide the hiitted facing clearly illustratcd in Figure 1 of the drawings.

second weft thread in the fabric andthe weft threads 4-which are disposed between the looped weft threads 2 are unlooped. rllhe weft threads 4 constitute means for preventing stretching of the fabric in the direction in which they extend while the warp threads 5, which are hunched in the loops -3 prevent stretching of said fabric in the other direction, as will be obvious.

As clearly indicated in Figure 2 of the drawings, the loops 3 are interlocked and the open end of each loop is closed by the preceding loop.

It will thus be seen that l have provided a fabric of rcombined woven and knitted construction which is roduced by knitting certain of the yweft threads of the fabric and thus eliminating the necessity for incorporating any additional threads 1n the fabric for the purpose of providing the same with a knitted face lor a partially knitted space.

rlhe herein described illustration and descript-ion'of the invention is merely a preferred embodiment which is shown by way of illustration and it is understood that various changes in the construction of the fabric may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

5. A fabric comprising warp and weft threads forming woven sections, certain of the weft threads being interlooped Ito form knitted sections between the Woven sections, certain of theV warp threads extending through the knitted sections and constituting means for preventing, longitudinal stretching of the :knitted sections, and the remaining weft threads extendi between the woven sections transversely of t e knitted y l sections and beneath said certain warp threads and constituting means for preventing transverse stretching of the knitted sections.

6. A fabric comprising warp and weft threads forming woven sections, certain of the weft threads being interlooped to form knitted sections between the woven sections, certain of the warp threads being'bunched and extending through the knitted sections Ereventing longitudinal stretching of the nitted sections, and the remainlng weft threads extending between the woven sections transversely of the knitted sections and beneath the warp threads in the knitted sections and constituting means for preventing lateral stretching of the knitted sections.
