My invention relates to veneering apparatus and more particularly to stay logs for use in connection with a veneering machine, the principal objects of the invention being to reinforce a stay log, to attach a wooden log securely to a stay log, to stabilize the engagement of the wooden log with the stay log, to supplement previously known means for attaching the wooden log to a stay log, and to prevent vibration of a veneer log from which a substantial portion has been shaved away.
In accomplishing this object I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a conventional form of a veneering machine having a stay log equipped with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view partly sectional of one of the chucks and a stay log-supporting bracket adjustably supported therefrom.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one of the stay log brackets.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view through a wooden log showing a stay log fixed thereto.
Fig. 5 is a similar view illustrating the partly reduce-d wooden log repositioned in engagement with the stay log and with my improved accessory reinforcement.
Referring in detail to the drawings:
1 designates generally a veneering machine including the usual chuck spindles 2 and 3, longitudinally adjustable in the machine, and chucks 4 and 5 on the spindles for engaging the ends of a wooden veneer log 6 for support of the log and rotation thereof.
The chucks are provided with ofiset arms or extensions 7 and 8 having guide slots 9 in which bosses 10 of offset members'or brackets 11 and 12 are slidably positioned. The brackets are adjusted radially of the chucks by adjusting screws 13 screw threadedly engaged with the extensions and projecting into the slot and therein screw threadedly engaged with the bosses. Lock nuts 1e fix the screws in bracket-adjusting position.
The brackets are fixed and supported in adjusted position by bolts 15 extending through slots 16 in lateral wings 17 of the 1928. Serial No. 296,761.

The stay log is preferably channel shape and has flanges 23 and 24: extending on its edges from the face 25, preferably adapted to engage a veneer log and threaded log-engaging pins or lag screws, such as 26 and 27 extend through the stay log flanges to bite into the veneer log and hold it fast to the stay log.
Mounted on the outer face 28 of the stay log and secured thereto by rivets 29 and transversely of the stay log is a reinforcing pin-supporting plate 30 having a boss 31 and an opening 32 to receive a log-engaging threaded pin lag screw 33. The plate is adapted for mounting on the median line of the stay log and the stay log is provided with an opening 3% to admit the pin to the veneer log.
In using the invention, a veneer log is mounted between the chucks and secured to the stay log by means such as the threaded pins extending through the edges of the stay log.
The flanges and the threaded pins extending through the flanges, ordinarily sufficiently stabilize the veneer log. hen the log has been reduced in thickness by the sham-'- ing of veneer slices therefrom, its stiffness is reduced and tendency to chatter and vibration develops, which prevents eflicient operation of the cutting members. The reinforcing plate riveted to the stay log in a central position thereon, tends to stiffen the stay log and check its vibration, and the lag screw extending through the plate and stay log radially into the veneer log secures the veneer log more firmly to the stay log.
The veneering cuts are made eccentrically from the log as shown in Fig. f and when one side is cut far enough toward the center oi? the log, the log is turned so that the cut surface engages the stay log and may be secured thereto by the threaded pins so that veneer cuts may be made from the portion of the periphery previously engaged with the stay log.
hen the veneer log is thus repositioned, the reinforcement element is particnla rly useful, since the continuation of she *ing of the veneer log may be limited by the occurrence of chattering. The application of my improved stabilizing device Will so stillen the lo however, that a substantially larger amount may be sliced from the veneer log, and therefore a substantial reduction is effected in the Waste formerly incurred through necessity for stopping the slicing operation because of the vibrations oi the Wooden log.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a stay log having lon itndinal edge log-engaging flanges and log-engaging means extending through said flanges for securing a veneer log to the stay log, a plate secured to the stay log on the face opposite to said flanges including a central thickened portion on the median line of the log having a pin-receiving opening and a threaded log-engaging pin extending through said opening, adapted to be anchored by the plate, the st y 10g having an opening to admit the pin to veneer log portions spaced from said log-engaging flanges ior stabilizing the veneer log.
2. In a stay log, a body comprising an elongated support having means on its iongitudi nal edges for engaging a veneer log, and logengaging means comprising a plate comprising lateral arms fixed to the body and a central apertured boss, and a threaded member extending through the boss and the body and anchored by the plate for retaining the veneer log in engagement with the stay log.
3. In a stay 10g including an elongated channel member having means on its longitudinal edges for engaging a veneer log and an opening on its median line to admit a lag screw to the veneer log, a screw-anchoring member comprising a thickened portion mounted on the median line of the stay log and having an opening registering with the opening in the stay log, and laterally extending portions secured to the stay log for attaching the anchoring member to said log.
