the action of the tool, and particularly at avoiding defects in operation, notably those due to the inertia of the masses operated.
According to the invention, an improved operating tool and means for operating same are provided, comprising a pivoted bellcrank lever of light material carrying an engraving diamond or point on one arm, an armature in the form of a magnetic disc of very reduced mass actuating the other arm, and an electromagnet in the form or a'pot to operate said armature.
Further features of the invention may be appreciated from the following description of a preferred form of apparatus in accordance therewith illustrated in the accompanying drawing.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, a is a magnet in the form of a pot with a central core a carrying a solenoid b, the whole being accommodated in an aluminium casing provided with adevice 0 for securing it on the engraving machine. In the chamber formed by a cover cl of non-magnetic material and the magnet a,'a is disposed an armature e in the form of a disc, the mass of which is reduced as much as possible, the armature 0 being guided on one side by a shaft f of non-magnetic metal accommodated in the core a and on the other side by a shaft 9 passing through the cover 01. A spring h, the tension of which can be adjusted by slackening a holding screw it and sliding a bracket it" up or down a fixed rod h, act- 5 ing on the extension of the shaft 9 at its at-its upper part a finely adjustable screw m upper end, brings the disc 6 bacl; to its positionof rest after each interruption of the current in the solenoid Z), the air imprisoned between the disc 6 and the cover (Z, as it is more and more compressed by the movement of the disc, havinga checking or dash-pot e ect. In order to reduce as much as possible the bad effects of mass inertia, the lever k, Z, through which passes the extension of the shaft g, is formed as a trunnion, which is held between n the shaft 9 and a spring washer n bya nut, to prevent all playwhile not impeding its mobility.
We claim: 7
1. In apparatus for electro-magnetically engraving printing rollers: an engraving point and means for operating the same, comprising a pivoted bell-crank lever of light material carrying the engraving point on one arm, an armature in the form of a magnetic disc oi? veryreduced mass actuating the other arm, and an electro-magnet in the form of a pot to operate said armature, the arrangement being such that the disc armature is received in said electro-magnet.
2. Appantus of the type set forth, comprising a pivoted bell-crank lever of light material, carrying an engraving point on one arm, an armature in the form of a magnetic disc of very reduced mass connected to the other arm, an electro-magnet in the form of a pot to operate said armature and a cover forthe electro-magnet forming a chamber therewith in which said armature disc is enclosed, so that the compression of the im prisoned air by the disc in action may have a dash-pot effect.
3. Apparatus of the type set forth, comprising a pivoted bell-crank lever of light material carrying an engraving point on one arm, an armature in the form of a magnetic disc of very reduced mass actuating the other arm, an electro-magnet in the form of a pot to operate said armature, a cover for the electro-magnet forming a chamber therewith in which said armature is enclosed, elastic means to return the armature to its position of rest after each interruption of the current in the electro-magnet and means to adjust the tension of said elastic means.

Apparatus of the type set forth comprising a pivoted hell-crank lever of light material carrying an engraving pointwon one arm, an armature in the form 01? a magnetic disc of Very reduced massactuatingthe other arm, an electro-uiagnet in the form of a pot to operate said armature, a spring to return the armature to its position of rest after each interruption of the current in the electromagnet, said spring acting on an extension forming part of the armature, a sliding bracket to adjust the tension of said spring, means to 'lix said sliding bracket in a required position, a trunnion forming part of said hell-crank lever and through which passes said extension of the armature, and Washers for holding said trunnion between them to prevent all play While not impeding the mobility.
