I This invention relates to dies for punching certain articles of characteristic shape from sheet metal and pertains more particularly to a novel arrangementof progressive dies for the rapid production, from stock strips, of lock washers of the "so-called rolling tooth type, commonly known in the market as shakeproof lock washers and described in United States Patent No. 1,419,564, issued to Richard T. Hosking June 13, 1922.
' The claimed novelty in this invention is found in a new arrangement of a plurality of progressive dies, by which a certain method of producing pronged. washers, s'etforth in the patent issued to J. R. Richer, February 14,
19283510. 1,659,161, carried out on a basis of a rapid production. The method, as described in that patent, is a method bf procedure whereby two diiferent types of rolling tooth washers are. produced from the same stock strip, one having external and the other internal prongs. The procedure comprisesunching'a hole in the strip, stamping out a lank concentric with the hole and having a serrated edge forming regular prongs or teeth around its periphery, and twisting the external prongs thus formed out of the plane of the blank, and finally twisting the internal prongs out of the plane of the strip and a0 stamping out a second concentric blank with I a circular periphery- The novel mechanical-means by which the feeding means, as rollers 2, 3, 4, in theusual aforesaid method is- 'racticed comprises-an arrangement and com ination of progressive dies by which internal toothed washers and external toothed washers are rapidly and cheaplyproduced from\th e same stock strip. Punches 5, 6 and dies 5a, 6a for simultaneously piercing and piloting the strip, are provided, as is usual in progressive dies of this character, and 7 is a blanking punch, externally ribbed or fluted lengthwise and adapted with its die 7 a to blank a washer 1a and push it part way throughthe strip without severing it entirely.

Die 12 is provided with longitudinal ribs, the ends of which comprise a serrated series of forming faces '14.
In two moves of the stock strip the'newly twisted teeth arrive at a punch and die 15' which is adapted to flatten the dicated by'the dotted circle, Fig. 1.

1. Means for producing two different kinds of pronged lock washers from the same stock strip, comprising strip-feedin means, dies for progressively piercing an piloting the strip, a ribbed punch and a complemental ribbed die adapted to blank one of said washers and topush it part way only through the strip, a second ribbed punch and a ribbed die havin beveled work-engaging faces on its ribs adapted to push said washer completely through the stock and to simultaneously twist its prongs, the spaces for the prongs between adjacent ribs in said last mentioned die being narrower'than those in the said blanking die,"a pilot,atooth-twisting punch and die adapted to twist the prongs remaining in the stock strip after passing the above mentioned dies, a die for flattening the area of the an nula-r ring of material surrounding thevsaid last mentioned prongs and a blanking punch and die for severing said flattened ring from the stock strip, thereby. producing a second washer.
2. A means for producing pronged lock washers from stock strip comprising strip progressively piercing and piloting the strip,- a co-operating ribbed punch-and ribbed die adapted to blank a washer and to push it part way only through the strip, a second ribbed punch having beveled work-engaging faces on its ribs adapted to push said washer completely through the stock and a ribbed die co-operating therewith to simultaneously twist the prongs of the] washer, .the s aces between the ribs of said Q die being? narrower than the corresponding spaces of said ribbed blanking die, thereby producing one complete lock washer and preparing the stock strip for simultaneously yielding other complemental washers.
