IMPROVEMENT IN SULKV-PLOWS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,524, dated June 13, 1876; application filcd December 17, 1875.

To all whom it may conccrnfl Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY, of Trenton, in the county of Grundy and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky-Ilows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference cated by a: 00 in Fig. 1.

My invention consists in the combination,

with a plow of the ordinary construction, of the sulky attachment hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims. In the drawing, A is the plow, the beam of which B is passed through a slot, 0, in the casting O, which is affixed to the axle of the sulky. Casting O has another slot, d, in which is pivoted, adjustably, the brace D, the other end of which is pivoted to the rear end of the plow-beam B just above the heel. The object of this brace is to steady the plow and keep it at its proper depth when set in the ground. Casting O is secured to axle K by set-screws m, which slide in slots 3 so that the casting may be readily adjusted to its proper position.

To the front part of plow-beam B is hooked arod, E, having a series of perforations, e 0. This rod is pivoted to one end of lever F, the other end of which has a handle, f, within ready reach of the driver, whose seat G is some distance behind the axle of the sulky. Lever F has a spring-catch, h, (operated by the driver,) which engages with the ratchets in the segmental ratchet H, which is affixed by one end to the axle of the sulky, while the other end has a downward-projecting arm, i, by which it is fastened to crossbar I in front of the axle. The fulcrum of lever F is on cross-bar I,it (the lever) being pivoted to the time to raise or lower the front end of the plow-beam, thus setting the plow to any desired depth, at which itwill be kept steadily by means of the brace I).

The-axle of the sulky consists of two pieces, K L. These two pieces are bolted together, the shorter, I1, being placed below the longer, K, which thus reaches from wheel to wheel. The bolting is-further strengthened or braced by the casting 0, before mentioned. Each of the pieces K L has a wheel, M. By this arrangement of the axle one side of the snlky is slightly raised above the other, and the plow is slightly tipped, which makes the drafteasier, and, besides, facilitates the turning of corners, which can by this arrangement be done without removing or lifting the plow from the ground. The tongue N is affixed to the axle K near the end of the same. It is braced by a rod, n, and the cross-bar I, before mentioned. The seat-bar 9, having seat G, is affixed to rod n at or near cross-bar I.

The advantages of my improved su'lky attachment will be readily understood from the foregoing description. It may be used with any plow of the ordinary construction, right or left handed, by simply reversing. It is light of draft, and the depth of the furrow is easily controlled by the driver, who, if the plow should be inclined to slip out of the.

ground, can brace his feet against, and thus throw his entire weight upon, the beam B, thus keeping the plow in place. This, however, is rarely necessary, the plow being effectually steadied by the brace D.

Having thus described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a sulky attachment for plows, the combination of the double axle-tree K L, having set-screws x, with the downwardly-projecting casting 0, having slots y, by which its position relative to axle K L may be adjusted, substantially as and for the purpose herein.- before set forth.
