This invention has reference to pneumatic hammers, and aims to provide a device which may be readily and easily attached to a pneumatic hammer to hold the hammer plunger in position at all times, insuring against accidental displacement thereof, while in use.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily positioned on the usual pneumatic hammer barrel without making alterations in the hammer construction,
thereby reducing the cost in using the attach ment to the minimum.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for cushioning the action of the hammer plunger, to relieve the operator of undue strain incident to the rapid reciprocation of the hammer plunger, while in use.
Another important object of the invention is to provide means for securing the snaps against displacement from the hammer should the hammer be accidently discharged,
thereby preventing injury to persons.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the'combination and arrangement of parts and in the v details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the barrel of a tures to receive the bolt 13 the supporting band 11 into close engagement pneumatic hammer, which is supplied with a handle 6 at one end thereof by means of which the hammerissupported while inuse.
The reference character 7 designates the hammer plunger with which the attachment 1s associated, and as shown, the hammer plunger is provided with a peripheral flange 8 which is engaged by the plunger ring 9 formed at one end of the rod 10, forming a. part of the invention.
The device also includes a split sup ortin band 11 that has ears 12 p g formed with aperdeslgned to secure with the barrel on which it is positioned.
Secured to the band 11, as by means of the rivets 14, is a supporting barrel 15 which has a notch 16 formed in one end thereof to provide a clearance for the rod 10. .As clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing, the rod 10 is provided with a head 17 at one of its ends, which head defines a stop for one end of the coiled spring 18 which has its opposite end abutting against one end of the body portion so that as the hammer plunger moves outwardly, the spring will be placed under tension to return the rod and plunger to their initial positions.
Positioned overthe coiled spring, is a tubuand at the same time acts as a guide and support for the headed extremity of the rod 10 to insure against the rod twisting while m use.
In view of the fact that the body portion 15 is substantially tubular, it will be obvious that the housing will be securely held against vertical movement with respect to the body portion, but will be permitted to move slightly longitudinally of the body portion.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown, the usual reciprocating hammer plunger of a pneumatic hammer will be held against accidental displacement at all times to the end that the hammer plunger and hammer may be used with facility without danger of the plunger slipping from its work.
I claim:
A safety device for pneumatic hammers,

including a supporting barrel, the upper portion of the barrel being cut away throughout its length and having a notch in one end of the body portion, a removable tubular housing positioned in the barrel, a rod having a head on one of its ends and having a ring on the opposite end to embrace the hammer plunger with which the device is used, said rod resting in the notch, the head of the rod being positioned in the housing, a coiled spring surrounding one end of the rod and held between the head and one end of the barrel to normally hold the rod tothe limit of one of its movements, and means for clamping the device to a pneumatic hammer.
