This invention relates to a feeding device and more particularl to a device adapted to fill packages until t eir contents equals an exactly predetermined weight. The invention relates more particularly to a feeding device in which there is a main feed adapted to feed material rapidly and an auxiliary feeding device adapted to feed material at a lesser rate, and the present invention relates particularly to the arrangement for furnishing material to the auxiliary feeding device. Details and further features of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front view of apparatus embodying one form of j the invention with parts broken away to disclose the construction; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 viewing the devlce from the left of Fig. 1, parts being broken away and parts in section in order to disclose the construction more clearly.
As -will be seen, the hopper flares outwardly, and underneath this flaring ortion of t e hopper and above the line 0 discharge opening 13 there is arranged an auxiliary propeller 15 adapted to discharge material downward through an opening 16 into passage 13. In the construction shown, the auxiliary pro eller 15 comprises a screw driven in a suitab e manner from a motor 17 or other suitable power means. Geared to screw 15 to rotate at the same-time therewith are a tators 18 and 19 adapted to agit te material and feed it to the screw. Thecasing 20 of the auxiliary feeder is attached to the side of hopper 14 and is fed through an openin 21 in said hopper. is a guide chute 22, the lower en of which fits into-opening 21. The upper end 23 of chute 22 is somewhat smaller than the cross Inside of the hopper t ere section of the chute on a level with the upper agitator 19.
The operation of the device is as follows: It will be readily understood that in operating this device, the main part of the charge which is to be filled into a receptacle is discharged rapidly by the main impeller 11. During this time the material is drawn down into the main propeller and moves downward in hopper 14. A part of the stream is intercepted by chute 22 and guided towards the auxiliary feeding device. This auxiliary feeding device may be run or not, as desired, during this portion of the filling operation. When nearly the desired weight has been discharged into the receptacle, the main impeller is stopped and the auxiliary feeding device continues in operation until the desired charge in the receptacle is completed. It will be readily understood that when the main impeller is stopped the downward movement of material in hopper 14 is stopped. With many kinds of material there is a tendency for it to bridge over opening 21 so that the auxiliary feeding device couldv supply only that in the auxiliary casing while the mam impeller was at rest. Chute 22 is introduced to avoid this difiicult As willbe readily apparent this chute ecomes filled with material while the main impeller is in operation and the material is moving downward through the hopper. The downwardly flaring construction of chute 22 insures that the material in the chute will flow downward into the auxiliary feeding device .even if the material in hopper 14 should bridge over the top of chute 22;
This chute contains an ample supply of material to furnish all that will be needed to complete the charge after the main propeller has been stopped.
It will be readily understood that other types of propellers than those indicated might be used and that the main feed might be stopped by shutting a gate instead of stopping the motion of the impeller and that other obvious changes might be made within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a main feeding device,
. auxiliary feeding device.
3. In apparatus for charging receptacles, a main feeding device adapted to discharge material rapidly into a receptacle, an auxiliary feeding device adapted to discharge material more slowly into the same receptacle, a hopper in position to supply material to said main device, and a chute extending from said auxiliary device into said hopper, said chute being large enough to enclose as much material as is fed by the auxiliary device into one receptacle.

In apparatus for charging receptacles, a main feeding device adapted to discharge material rapidly into a receptacle, an auxiliary feeding device adapted todischarge material more slowly into the same receptacle, a hopper in position to supply material to said main device, and a chute extending from said auxiliary device into said hopper, said chute leading in the same general direction as the line of travel of the material in said hopper to said main device.

6. In combination, a cylindrical casing having a. peripheral opening, a rotary impeller Ward from an opening throu h the side of said hopper and guiding materlal to said auxiliary device, said chute expanding down wardly.
