IMPROVEMENT IN TEASELING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,49 7, dated June 6, 1876; application filed January 29, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs WILLANs, of Philadelphia, -Pennsylvania, have invented certain 1m provements in Teaseling-Machin'es, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to certain improvements in the machines employed for raising a nap on the face of cloth, and known as teaseling-machines; and the object of my invention is to provide for the ready cleaning of the burrs on the teaseling-cylinders. This object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved teaselingmachine; Figs. 2 and 3 views of difl'ereut forms of cleaning-brushes Figs. 4, 5 and 6, detached views of my invention.
A represents one of the opposite side frames of the machine, in which are formed bearing for the shafts of two teaseling cylinders, B B, and also for numerous small drawing-rollers, a, and supporting-rollers b, which cause the passage of the fabric through the machine and guide it during the passage.
The drawingrollers a receive their motion by means of suitable gearing from the shaft d, to which 'power is applied from an adjacent shaft.
Power is also applied directly to the shafts 'of the two cylinders B B, so that the latter are entirely independent of each otherin their operation, and are also independent of the drawing mechanism.
The cloth is maintained in contact with the cylinders by the action of rollers e at the upper ends of the toothed segmental frames f, by operating which the rollers 0 may be raised or lowered, and the cloth caused to pass in contact with more or less of the surface of the cylinder, as desired.
The means by which I effect the cleansing of the burrs when a reciprocating cleaningbrush is used, are illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, on reference to which, it will be observed that one end of the shaft, which carries one of the cylinders B, is provided with a ratchetwheel, 2', with the teeth of which engages a pawl, h, carried by an arm, 9, which is vibrated by a pulley on the shaft of one of the drawing-rollers a through the medium of the connecting-rod j. This arrangement is duplicated in connection with the other cylinder B.
When the machine is in operation the pawl his kept out of gear with the teeth of the ratchet i, which revolves freely in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 4. When the teaselburrs have to be cleaned, however, the cylinder is stopped, and the pawl thrown into gear with the ratchet.
As the arm g is vibrated an intermittent backward movement isimparted to the cylinder in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 5, the teeth of the ratchet i being, by preference, so formed that each vibration of the arm 9 causes a movement of the circumference of the cylinder to the extent of one row of burrs. As thecylinder is thus slowly turned backward, the rows of burrs are brought in succession under the action of the reciprocating cleaning-brush D, Fig. 3, the result being the thorough and rapid cleansing of the burrs from the lint and dirt with which they are clogged.
When a rotating cleaning brush, Fig. 2, is used, the pawl and ratchet mechanism may be dispensed with, and the shaft of the teaseling-cylinder provided with fast and loose pulleys, and with a belt, .90, passing over a pulley on the shaft of the drawing-rolla, Fig.6. This roller has a rotary motion in a direction contrary to that of the cylinder, so that when it is thrown into gear with the shaft of the cylinder, a slow but continuous backward movement may be imparted to the latter, and all the burrs on the same brought under the action of the rapidly-rotating brush.
I claim as my invention- The combination, in a cloth teaseling machine, of a teaseling-cylinder, B, with a cleaning brush, drawing mechanism and devices, substantially as described, through the medium of which said drawing mechanism is caused to impart a backward movement to the cylinder.
